I have to say that I like it a lot and it will help both new and old players to advance in the game. I have already found some minor skills that I have missed training on my characters that I did not know had a connection to the professions that I was performing.
But after fixing those gaps in the training, what will come next?
I hope that these "Starter Professions" will be complemented with a higher advanced group of Professions. The ones I currenty is missing is Professions showing your skills in Battleship operations and with the neutral ships from ORE. If this next level of Professions gets introduced that are more specilized and skill heavy, it should also be planned to introduce capital Professions in about 6 months later. So personally I am hoping for Profession Certificates showing my skills in using Black Ops and/or Marauders in the next expansion in March-09.
The one that I realy would like is the one showing skills in using ships from ORE.

ORE Industry - Prospector - Improved (Exhumers) 1 - Resource Harvester Elite Certificate 2 - Refinery Foreman Improved Certificate 3 - Exhumers Level 3 4 - Core Competency Standard Certificate 5 - Active Shield Tanking Standard Certificate
ORE Industry - Prospector - Elite (Capital Industrial Ships) 1 - Refinery Foreman Elite Certificate 2 - Harvesting Comptroller Improved Certificate 3 - Capital Industrial Ships Level 1 4 - Jump Drive Operation 1
The above profession needs a lot of tweaking but I think you get the drift of what I am thinking about. Skills that needs to woven into the above tree somehow is the skills for Ice Specialist, Mercoxit Specialist, Ice Processing, Gas Cloud Harvesting, Shield Transporters, Drone Operations, Scanners and Cloning Facility Operation somehow just to mention a few skills that I know I have missed in the above tree.
Maybe it should be split into three different professions instead, one starter (Mining Barges), one experienced (Exhumers) and one Elite Profession (Capital)?
