So anyway, my computer started acting funny today. I've been having this problem where I need to use an older driver for my video card to make Eve work right, but every now and then it loads the new driver and screws it all up.
So anyway I reload the older driver and go to reboot, and it won't do it. It just reboots and reboots and reboots. Every now and then I can interrupt it in the middle with the reset button and get the option to use safe mode or what not, but it won't go into safe mode.
It just reboots in a viscious cycle. I can't even get my supposedly bootable windows disc to boot. Anyone have any ideas? Because atm I can't use my pc at all.
It doesn't help matter than my skill is due to complete in a couple hours and no telling when I can get this fixed. Why can't this stuff happen AFTER I had set refine eficency 5 to train?

Well you should have your newer drivers uninstalled before re-installing older ones... What computer specs do you have? CPU, RAM, Graphics card, OS, connection speed, all that are needed to get a good answer back.

I can't reload windows, it won't do it. I have a bootable disc and it refuses to boot. I can't boot from floppy either.

Can you get into your bios before your OS boots ?
If so, switch the Primary boot device your cdrom, or floppy, whichever boot disc you have.

Ok sounds like your video card is screwed up... try to re-install Windows as soon as you can mate. I had similar problems once. I had my computer rebooting because my video card was overheating..
Since you changed your video card drivers recently that should be the issue. Re-install Windows XP pro let the default windows video drivers take over, download the latest from www.nvidia.com and try again.
Do not let your computer be on too long if you dont re-install or you might damage your card seriously with over heating now.
And like the others said. Try to enter BIOS by pressing either F1, F2 or some PCs got it at F5. Change your boot sequence to be CD -> Floppy -> HDD. Put your Windows CD in, exit BIOS by saving changes first and do a re-installation.

Ok, I'll try that as soon as I get off work. Hopefully that will fix it. I guess if my cards overheating I'll have to end up buying a new one as well

Edited by: Firebyrd on 08/07/2004 12:45:13 ur Motherboard, or video card could be failing, even Power supply could cause this, sounds like a memory leak, cause by a failing hardware, if u dont know anything about computers , then have a tech look at it....
but this is worse case, if u cant get software to work, then u need to have hardware checked, had similar problem and found Motherboard went bad(constant restarting on its own, some programs graphics went nuts, then started to get windows errors, and had to insert windows disk to repair, but i'd get it the next day or a few hours later, even had a ton of CTDs while playing EnB,4-5 every hour everyday) After i replaced the board hardly CTD at all, even on Eve....
Not trying to scare you, just saying it could be a worse case scenario ----------------------------------------------- In the End , there can be only 1

sounds like an overheating problem, the computer is shutting itself down as a result. could also be your power supply has blown

"could also be your power supply has blown"
My first guess is the PS fan is caked with dust, over heating & browning out...

PS isn't caked with dust, I keep my PC pretty clean inside. Also it's pretty new, I built it less than 3 months ago. Power supply reads a nice steady 5V output so...I reloaded windows, and that seems to have helped, only had one reboot. That was after 2-3 hours of playing so I think it's probably the card since I have a lot of stuff around it and it has no fan on it directly, just a heat sink.
Been looking for an escuse to get rid of the old thing and replace it for a better one. So now the question becomes, what card to get? Thinking of the 9700 pro, or maybe 9800. I need somethig thats not too expensive, but want a descent upgrade as well. Suggestions?

Good to hear you got the comp running again. As for your choice of gfx cards; The new gen ATi x800 family of cards were released onto the market in May and they are considerably faster (allegedly) than the 9800 series with it's huge set of pixel pipelines and the higher core/mem clockfreq.
Funny thing though is that the 9800XT and the x800 Pro are still going for about the same money so if I were you I'd wait till the 9800 Pro/XT 256Mb drops to an affordable level and go for one of those. The 9800 XT performs marginally better than the Pro so I'm not sure it's worth the extra bucks to forsake the Pro for the XT just yet, but by the end of the summer perhaps...
