I tried locating an official feedback thread, but did not find one. I am delivering my observations here instead.
There definately is an issue or two with the QR client. A memory leak in the classic client (dont know about the premium), and a problem with the overview. These two could possibly be related.
Overview I have recently been in a few lenghty fleet battles. The first involved a very large number of players, the second was a somewhat smaller affair.
In the first, I had a problem with my overview seemingly "refreshing" constantly, making it impossible to play (no brackets, only hostile caps shown, no effect, etc.) The client crashed, I relogged and that may have cleared the problem (could not verify, as the fight was over by then.)
The next day, I was in a smaller fight. I had completely reinstalled the classic client, made new overviews (no brackets, etc.) This time I got "just lag." I did hear from an alliance mate afterwards, that he had suffered the same problem as I had the day before. He relogged, and that cleared the problem.
He described it as "my client keeps zooming in/out by itself."
Interestingly, he also took part in the first much larger battle, and did not experience any problems.
Chat The chat windows have an unusual bug. Typing in them, each letter goes on a new line, as if an automatic NEWLINE was added. When hitting ENTER, the text appears as normal. If you select all, delete and the start typing again, the NEWLINE-problem is gone. Switching away from the chat windows, and back seemlingly reproduces the bug.
Performace The client (I use classic) is subject to a problematic memory leak. I had two clients running. One had a character doing 40+ jumps, the other stayed put in space. The travelling client started performing very poorly. To the point where I could not even fit a ship. I relogged, and that cleared the problem. On my way back, I got the impression that the client started going slower again, relogged and cleared it.
Jumping seems to aggrivate this problem, as does docking. My impression is, that it is somehow related to the "reloading overview" problem.
Unsatisfactory I have played since 2003 and despite promises, CCP has failed to deliver on promised features (large fleet combat).
I am in a unique position to stop playing, and will likely do so. Not because of this patch in particular, but the drop in ambition, content delivery, and actual performance gives me no incentive to seek a way to keep playing.
On a purely entertainment based evaluation, EVE-online fails those who interact with other players. 50 vs 50 fights are now as horrid as 150 vs 150 fights were 3-4 years ago. Most players I know never use your award winning graphics. Most play the game zoomed out (they have too,) and with the sound turned off. Strictly speaking, for a game that "just" involves mouse-clicks, and pressing buttons, EVE-online perfomance is horrible.
I am a Gemeni-veteran. I have the CD. I have been entertained, and have (largely) been satisfied with what I have recieved.
BUT...
Your 2008 performance, patches, lack of ambitions, lack of improvement, and a very greedy business-model, has tipped the "reasons to keep playing"-balance in favor of "screw them!"
Elaborating a bit. It is not ambitous to keep talking about "walking in stations" when everyone is clear on the fact that it is merely a vehicle to get us to beta-test the World of Darkness development team.
The Need for speed initiative has failed. Failed to deliver on expectations you yourself built up.
The "greedy business model"-remark is based on the fact that EVE is way too expensive compared to other MMORPGS. You may feel you have a solid product, but that line has been crossed long ago, as I am sure you can see on the dropping "concurrent users"-graph.
So in short... The next patch better be AWESOME! |
