Hi, A noob trying to figure things out about Alts. So far I've got myself slowly working through missions with my primary character and improving his skills.
It's a cliff of a learning curve, but I am slowly getting there.
I'm just about getting by with one character, so what am I supposed to be doing with me as yet non existant other two?
I see all sorts of Alts been talked about (falcon alts, trading alts, covert ops alts etc), but I have no idea what to do with mine. Any suggestions?
Cheers
P.S. What on earth is a falcon alt? |

There are two kind of alts. Alts on the same accounts cannot be played (nor trained) concurrently with your main. Alts on separate accounts can train at the same time and they can also be played at the same time (with multiple game instances or by multiboxing).
There are a lot of possible uses for an alt, but which is for you it really depends on what you do ;) I'd say if you are not feeling the need for an alt you probably do not need it (yet).
The only kind of alt that, if you can afford it, I'd suggest you do during your early stages of the game is an alternative main on a second account. You will not be playing it, but you will be training it. Study the many threads about the learning skills and train it to 5/4. If you can afford them, also train and plug +5 attribute implants. Within a handfull of months this alternative main will eventually catch up and then surpass your main in terms of skillpoints. By then you'll probably know yourself what you want to do.

My Main is primarily a mission runner, trained in combat skills to include navigation, drone, shield, gunnery, missiles, electronics, and engineering. All geared toward fielding a powerful ship, both defensively and offensively.
One alt is Mining/Production. Mining skills to fly a hulk, (with drone skills for mining drones and some light scout drones for defense). Refining, refinery efficiency, and industry for producing stuff from blueprints. Usually ships and ammo for my main to use. Also mines stuff found on my main's missions, which sometimes can be very lucrative.
Other alt is Trading, sits in trade hub selling loot from missions. I'm also training him for exploration at the moment, with eventual jump into low/null sec exploration with my main coming in afterward to run the complexes.
All are members of single player corporation, which greatly simplifies transference of items thru use of corporate hangars.
I only run one account, train one character for awhile until I've reached whatever goal I set, then onto another character. Since I'm in this for the long run and enjoy what I'm doing, not having multiple accounts is not a drawback.
I've also found by taking things methodically and at a slower pace with one account, I gain a lot of experience thru repetition. Which in a tough situation becomes invaluable.

Edited by: Tandin on 18/11/2008 18:42:29 Edited by: Tandin on 18/11/2008 18:42:11 I have 3 accounts currently.. 2 of which have alts..
Account 1 1) main.. PvP.. 2) cyno alt.. has 1.2 mil SP.. no intention of ever training more
Account 2 1) Carebear character - Industry and Invention 2) cyno alt.. roughly the same as the other alt
Account 3 1) Super hauler, Jump freighter pilot.. currently training gallente capitals.. the main reason for the alts on the other two accounts (She also flies an abaddon so I can run missions for amarr navy if I'm needing cash) |

Edited by: Mankirks Wife on 19/11/2008 03:26:46 Hmm... for a same account alt (which generally are only minimally trained, if they're trained at all...)
- Forum Trolling. But don't troll tastelessly or too frequently. Trolling is an art form - you can't just throw paint at the canvas and expect the Mona Lisa to come out.
- Jita / Other market hub price checks.
- Spies!
- FW alts (I'd never use a non-training alt for this but some people do it)
- Selling GTCs. Most people would rather not have their mains associated with such things.
- Research. Lab Operation is pretty short - you can get 10 research slots per character in about a week and a half per. Less if you create your characters right.
- I could think of more but it's almost work time.

First off, unless you've been training for six months to a year don't even think about diluting your main's training time with an Alt. There are so many skill points needed to do anything right that you really want to concentrate on your main. One of the reasons here is money. You need money in EVE to do just about anything. Every thing costs. But, there is a really steep curve involved in making money. When you start out you can hardly make any but as you progress you can make a lot. A simple example would be the amount of money you could make between doing Level I missions and Level IV missions.
So, once you get your main to the point where he is doing Level IV missions ... then you might think about turning his training to something else.
Now, having a second account has a lot of advantages. You can operate as a team with your alt account. This works best with two computers but if you have a good computer with two monitors works fairly well also. Mining works very well with multiple accounts, missions work fairly well with two. To use multiple accounts while PVPing you should really know what you're doing or you'll just get them both killed.
There are three schools for each faction and it is common place to have alt accounts with two or even all three of these schools.
Some combinations:
1) Miner with Military or Trader driving a hauler 2) Military with Miner or Trader flying a Salvaging destroyer. 3) Trader with a Miner or Military guy flying haulers to support his trading. 4) Trader with Miner and or Military guys sitting in nearby regions to see what the prices there are.
Other uses are for Alternate Corporations or NPC Corps who act as scouts or spies or in Factional Warfare.
You can also use an alt to do things you don't want your main or the corporation they're in to get the blame for.
All in all, an Alt is used when you really need to have two characters doing something at about the same time - or from different locations. Before you create an alt and take the training time away from your main - ask yourself if you couldn't just train your main to do the job.
There is a lot of overhead in creating an alt. They all need ships and skill books, the more you want to do with them, the more they need. Also, it becomes difficult to really use more than one account at a time. Two accounts will NOT make you as efficient as two people using single accounts.

i have 3 accounts, and have taken advantage of Power of 2 twice, so i have one 'main' on each account and then a very specialised, six-month old char that will never be trained further on two of those accounts, but which compliment my other chars.
as someone else said, when you "need" an alt, you'll know. |

Thanks for all the responses people.
I think for the moment I'll just keep the to one account. I can't justify the extra cost of another account.
Looks like I'll probably hold off on Alts for a bit as I train up my main.
Thanks again. |
