How is this benefiting eve or CCP in the long run?

Yes, I've played for over 4 years, and I know it was cheaper in the past (btw watch Zeitgeist) but inflation means it has increased. To be honest, 12/month is peanuts compared to whatever else you, I imagine, pay for.
You could always just set up a mining macro and make nice coin that way. Plenty of others do.

Just another comment, I guess. It's Britain, you should be used to getting ****d at every turn when it comes to the cost of stuff.
On the plus side, the price of petrol here in the US has halved in the last 6 or 8 months. \o/ Maybe Ill start a few more accounts. Or maybe I'll continue to consolidate my accounts in protest.
