Well thats the question. In a pvp setting (not fleet warfare) what is the point to fitting an AB when you can duel web to catch otherships that would otherwise expect to be able to get away?

Imo dual webs should be better, because everyman and his dog will be trying to orbit you to negate your tracking. This means that you don't have to get to them, they will come to you :) It would be nice tho if you could spare a mid for a MWD as well, just for closing range when you need it. |

The point of an AB now? *Click AB insta-gain 40-50% damage reduction to missiles at all ranges*
That's the point.
Frig test I did 2 days ago highlights it: (All missile support Skills at 4)
Standard launcher on a Kessie with T1 Sabretooth vs Veangeance with no EM resists, Sabretooth default damage of 124 with my skills.
Target stationary: 115 damage Target MWD'ing (1750ms): 105 damage Target unmodded speed (317ms): 100 damage Target Afterburning (707ms): 61 damage
Standard launcher on a Kessie with Cald Navy Sabretooth vs Veangeance with no EM resists, Sabretooth default damage of 142 with my skills.
Target stationary: 132 damage Target MWD'ing (1750ms): 120 damage Target unmodded speed (317ms): 113 damage Target Afterburning (707ms): 70 damage

I can see the benifits of an AB for tanking missile damage on smaller ships and yes it will help when tanking missiles even in a battleship but assuming you are running an Autocannon or Blaster setup will the extra speed of the Afterburner really get you into range and keep you there or would you be better served by using a Duel web setup? |

Will test BC and medium weapons tonight or tomorrow, but I expect no big suprises or improvements in relation to what I see on the frig test.
Good Q. I guess if it's a gank fit/situation then you know what you need. Anyone with extra mids I suppose could fit lol?both for maximum surviveability and gank ability... |

There's lots of these thread popping up and I figured I'd post my thoughts on the subject.
First of all, it seems that there is a common misunderstanding about the essential purpose of a speed mod, be it AB or MWD. The primary reason you fit one is to contest the battlespace and tempo, everything else is wildly situational. While the MWD has long carried the (almost joking) moniker of "Mandatory Warp Drive", it was usually anything but mandatory. That said, here is what I think about these mods in general.
MWD: A double edged sword. Stiff fitting requirements, cap penalty and sig radius increase mean this module is purely for mobility. While it's not mandatory for most ships regardless of where they operate, it remains the best hope of survival for the average ship jumping into a bubbled 0.0 gatecamp. Incredibly short ranged ships or ships with immensely flexible engagement ranges (i.e. gallente blasterboats or most minmitar ships, who are bad at a wide variety of ranges) find the biggest benefit. Long range ships generally benefit from the modules as a mechanism for moving into positions and maintaining their range advantage, making it a very much situational module.
AB: With lower requirements, no penalties, no signuature increase and inferior speed boosts the afterburner is often less of a mobility module than it is a defensive mechanism. The low speed bonus means a ship equipped with a MWD can often outrun you even when it's a larger size class, meaning it's out of place on most ships designed around the concept of tackling as an essential component of it's role. It's certainly less useful for surviving gatecamps than the MWD, and it's primary utilitarian role becomes one of lightly contesting battlespace control and acting as a defensive mechanism under the appropiate circumstances. Generally speaking the AB is best used on smaller ships that are natively fast, with assault frigates being the obvious choice. On most larger ships the MWD remains the more logical choice. |
