So CCP anounced that they are going to improve(/introduce) NPC AI. Did they give out any more information about that yet ?
I m really curious about how thats going to be. Whats the smartest thing the Rats could do ? Throw anything agianst the Target(you) get into their Optimals and let their Barrels smoke. Thats pretty much all they do atm. Thats how EvE works. Focus fire. Period.
What could be improved ? They run away ? Dock up and refit ? :) Call in more Ships ?
The only thing i can really come up with is that they figure out your Optimal somehow and try to react to that. Which would mean Long Range Guns/Missles = win.
They could work on their Timing. Trying to reach their Optimals at the same time. Not much diffrence probably. Again it would mean = Long Range wins.
They could start shooting Drones = Ok, that would be smart. But very annoying :)
Smartbombing BS that kill Drones? Smart. But unless your a Domi Pilot that shouldnt make much diffrence. Besides it would just be the introduction of a new weapon rather than an improvement of the AI. Im sure the dumb rats of today would be capable of using smartbombs if they had some :)
What else could be done to improve our little NCP Friends ? Any Ideas someone ? Or is there even some official Info on that ?

well, they could make them run away, so its going to be much harder to get some bounty killing the npc |

Well, that would be kinda smart. But it would lead to what ?
If they run, like in warp off it would mean close range guns an AB and a disruptor. At the End of each Pocket we would end up Miles from the Warp Gate :/
If they run, like in disengage ABing out of our Optimals it would mean Long Range wins. Not much diffrence imo thinking off how fast they die to Tachs. Of Course AB, a Web and close Range Guns would do the Trick. Again Miles away from the Gate at the End of the Pocket...

a few improvements off the top of my head:
Actually jamming/scramming, etc. as in, not the random jam you get once every 30 seconds or so, i'm not a big mission runner so i'm not sure how it all works. But it would be more interesting if the ships did more than just run straight at you and shoot/scram as much as they can. Maybe only moving in packs, coordinating jams/alpha strikes/etc. Oh maybe changing target after they've started firing, that would be a start lol :)
If you want to go really far, you could go onto things like cutting across a ship thats got guns, to increase the tranversial velocity, hence making them harder to hit... that would be ace, but a pain in the arse to implement lol. ---

I am just a lvl III mission runner but I was running a Gallente mission, cant recall the name of it but I had about 6 ships running NOS and neuts on me. Played hell on my cap for my armor reppers. Made it fun trying to stay out of range of the energy drains. Other then that I wouldn't mind seeing them use drones. You get drones in drops but they never use them.

How about if NPC's decided to use drones? If they did I suspect no one would be able to complete the missions. 5 npc battleships alone letting loose 25 drones, some ECM,some scrammers and some webbers...things could get real ugly real quick

the missions levels 1-3 will have only 1 NPC drake at the beginning, but after you shoot him, it will call in some remote repair geddons, dominixes that will neut, scram and sensor damp you and finally uncloak 1 or 2 falcons. The level 4 missions will be basically the same, in addition to the previous they will lit a cyno field and have 2 or 3 npc nyxes hotdrop you.

How about NPC's changing targets. I really do hate how the first target in their range they attack, regardless of who is actually doing the most damage to them. That's kinda how it is in just about every MMO ever made, AI 101.

It will allow a Player in an NPC Corp to press a key, which would give their ship the ability to fight their battles for them when set upon by ore thieves, looters or pirates. Voila, NPC AI.
(Seriously though, why does this sound like an idea CCP would actually implement?)

Three changes I would like to see...
1. Mixing tank and damage types on NPCs so they aren't completely predictable. Compensating for the increased effective damage on players (a consequence of damage being distributed across multiple damage types) with fewer NPCs in missions. Result: Quicker mission running times with fewer bounties to balance to remain revenue-neutral and less predictable resistances for PVP-on-PVE preying.
2. Individual targeting behavior such as switching to target drones, switching to target logistic vessels, spreading scrambler points and webbing out amongst different targets, or simply switching to target player ships of a similar class as the NPC ship if one is present. Result: Ninja-salvagers and destroyer salvaging alts would likely become targeted by frigates in preference to the Battleship-flying mission-runner, and drones may require more babysitting... possibly to the point of not being a viable single-solution to missioning.
3. Group targeting behavior such that the presence of a given NPC on the grid results in others of the same faction assisting off it, essentially focusing their fire. Results: Allows for the entire aggro of a grid to be changed by a 'commander-type' vessel warping in. You could switch from individual behavior with multiple targets to one focused target on a ship spawn, and then see ships return to individual targeting behavior when the 'commander-type' ship is destroyed.

A follow-up of 2 + 3 I just thought of...
Having defined group 'roles' for NPC which they take on in the presence of a command type, but which may not correspond directly to their individual role. An example might a cruise that obits quickly, stays at range and DPS normally suddenly flying in closer to NOS and jam in the presence of a commander type.
Better examples exist, I'm sure...

I'm thinking target calling.
If there's a logistic ship remote repping the DPS ship, shoot the logistics first. Will make complexes a living hell.

bumping you when you warp out, and scramming when your tank hits 1-5%... :P
also rats can RR and use some logical ewar, not just random and predictable things, NPC amount can be reduced but their individual behavior can be improved, they start to tank, or to run away or to squeak finally.

Give the NPC's the ability to cheat.
Let them shoot torpedoes out to 50km+, have infinite capacitor, immunities to ecm and dampening, and maybe let them use the occasional super drone.

NPC's with weaker versions of other races racial ewar types would help. Nos/Neuts across the board.
But CCP would really need to get rid of the rediculous ranges on some of the NPC Ewar/nos that they currently have to bring it in line with modules players have and the modules an NPC ship could realistically fit.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

They arent going to do AI all around. They are going to introduce it for like 10/10 complexes, belt rats and such. Where there's pretty much no risk in having the rats be intelligent as these things are crushed anyway. Missions will be one of the last ones to get AI.
Quote: They could start shooting Drones = Ok, that would be smart. But very annoying :)
Never happen. Drone HP is so small now... they pop pretty easily. Even with domi-ishtar bonuses.
Doing this would mean drones arent an option at all vs rats. Which is just plain stupid because so many ships depend on drones signficantly.
Frigates in mission? Use light drones because ur guns/missiles cant kill them. Oh wait ur lights instapop.

Cant happen because rats cant pod you. Which in this case they would.
My corpmate might have drones on this smartbomb bs and i die. Then get podded? ------------------------ To make a megathron from scratch, you must first invent the eve universe. ------------------------ Life sucks and then you get podded. |
