I tried out the game around the beginning of 2006, most of the following is recalled from my hazy memory.
It was advertised as "free", so I took a bash at it. I done the 'sweat' grind for several days and achieved ~10,000 sweat. I sold most of it and bought a FAP (medical kit, not hand shandy), a pistol and some ammo and decided to head out into the world with my Guantanamo suit and tour the island (well I took off my top to appear more Rambo like).
The south-west part of the island is the most populated area, as this is where all the noobs spawn and so it attracts a market hub. I toured up north to a huge city, the 'capital city' (I forget all the names) where there wasn't a soul to be seen (peak time too), a total ghost town with some holographic shopkeepers selling various things.
I went further north and traveled along the coast avoiding T-Rex type creatures and discovered various player owned houses that were open to the public. The houses displayed all manner of trophies from their travels. Further to the east I came upon a space dock that allowed players (with money) to travel off planet to another part of the game world.
From memory nothing really stands out further to the east, though there was a PVP area a small distance to the south. Travelling south along the coast I met a few friendly player's around here who killed the large creatures that were chasing me; my running skills improved a lot in this area. I think they were surprised to see a noob out this far.
Travelling south-south-west I came upon another PVP area, the Oil Rig. Now this place is death, you have the toughest mobs (super T-Rex like creatures, Atrox?) circling a small oil rig, combined with some of the best players in the game killing each other in order to hold the oil rig.
The oil rig spews out free oil that is worth cold hard cash, but can be offset by the cost of ammo & repairs required to hold the area, so the vets tend to do it in groups. I was allowed to stay next to the rig if I joined in with everyone doing the naked dancing ritual and indulged in a bit of banter. It was also a good opportunity to get some decent advice about the game.
It's a real grind type of game and you will see many obvious bots at work. IIRC there are 3 small PVP areas which are very quiet, apart from the oil rig for obvious reasons. Other than that you can hunt mobs, make clothes, tame creatures, socialise, whatever floats your boat...
Anyway, you need real money in this game to succeed. If you are rich in real life then you can 'buy' your way in this game. One of the stranger mechanics was the fact that you can buy experience from other people (which imho broke the game). You can buy the best gear, basically do anything you want to; IF you have the money.
It has probably is all changed now, but imho i saw for what it was (gambling game/money sink) and moved on to Eve.
