Hoping for some help.
Is it worth having a high charisma for a trading character or is it worth having other skills high so you can survive the haulage trips?
Thanks

Trading and Hauling are two seperate yet complimentary proffessions. Not all haulers trade, and not all traders haul.
ok that had to be said first.
If you plan on undocking this character and getting him some non social/trade skills, then dont hurt you other attribs just to have a really high CHA. At the same time dont gimp him so low that you hurt yourself.i

Edited by: Lexander Morinex on 25/11/2008 15:00:25 My opinion is that low CHA is appropriate even for a trader.
I have the fairly standard 9/9/9/9/3 Achura build, as a trader. The weaker CHA hurts ever so slightly when training up the basic trading skills, but those higher stats everywhere else are a big plus for anything else. It lets you build up to those nice trading ships faster, lets you perform any mining and industrial tasks sooner, and lets you fly ships effectively that much sooner. All this at the cost that a few of the trade skills (and many of the social skills) take longer to train. Overall, an easy trade that gets easier as I gain more SP and keep improving my industrial capability.
As it is, even though it slows down my trading skills, I wouldn't change having 3 charisma. Charisma, as is typical in MMO's, is the bastard stepchild of skills. It is my deep hope that one day in the future game designers will finally toss this relic of tabletop games into the dustbin in which it belongs. When players interact, the CHA stat hardly matters, and interaction with NPC's is hard to code so that CHA has some deep meaning. Unsurprisingly, when designing skills for a PvP focused game, it turns out that they don't use charisma based skills all that often.
With my original setup, I started with Trade V, Diplomacy V, and Retail IV, and several useful social skills. In other words, by setting CHA low and setting up my character for trade, I got a free jump on those skills that actually use CHA while being able to skill up all the other things more quickly.

Thanks guys.
I'm essentially trying to set up an alt for trading, but have little experience in it. (read: almost none)
I'd like to specialise for trading as much as possible, but assume that until you start getting some of the skills like Marketing and Procurement (and even after then) I'm going to need to travel to move stuff around. And if I'm moving stuff round I'll need to be able to fly and defend myself?
If it's possible to keep things going whilst you sit in one station, some help figuring out how would be appreciated.

It takes virtually no time to get a basic Industrial. I fancy Amarr, which has a perfectly sound Industrial that requires virtually no skill. Load up a few cargo bays and you can haul around to get going.
Get a couple of levels of Accounting and Broker Relations. I would suggest, after having now done it, that you grin and bear it and power up the learning skills as quickly as you can. You can make plenty of money just running around doing basic routes while you build up skill. With an out of the box trader you get 55 buy orders, giving you plenty of starting business. The one negative to a beginning trader with crappy Charisma is you are stuck with a long wait to Retail V unless you skill up your learning skills. But I found other things to be more important at first.
Other wiser players can get into the details, but a starting trader requires virtually no skill to find deals and make money. If you want to extract value out of items with 5-10% margin you will need more skills, but if you just want to buy here, sell there, you don't need much of anything.

Agree. Whatever you starting race, the Bestower is probably the best Industrial you can get without the Racial Industrials Skill at level V. Why? The 4 low slots make it rather unique.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I shall give it some thought. You've given me some options to consider.
Cheers
