1. I play eve because people can actually lose their stuff here, and others can gain it. Since people can actually lose their stuff here, people act differently than in other mmos, which seem to promote peace and sunshine.
2. I play online games to play against other players, if I wanted to kill npcs forever, I could play a single player RPG.
The other day I had some guy just outta nowhere insult me, I went and grabbed a ship ready for suicide ganking. By the time I got there, lucky for me he had gone to a low sec system. I went, killed and sent him a mail. If this was WoW I would have never been able to do this...

I don't play EVE for the graphics. To maximize performance, I'm using the classic client rather than premium, have all music and sound effects turned off, and have optional visual effects turned off as well. And I don't play EVE because I like the other players. If anything, I've found other EVE players more offensive than any other MMORPG I've played. Having said that, there are great people playing EVE and I've become friends with some of them.
I first gave EVE a try after a couple of years of seeing it's positive recognition and rewards on various gamer sites. Once I finally downloaded the game and gave it a try for myself, I was sucked in, even though my first character was primarily a mission-runner. Here's what I like about EVE:
- I can play solo. Although I enjoy flying in gangs, being in a corp, etc. the truth is I live in Asia and my primetime is not the same as Euro or North American primetimes.
- I don't feel like I'm grinding. I can have fun now. In other MMORPG's I was constantly killing monster X over and over again, gaining experience just so I could have access to better content. That "grind" was no fun. In EVE I wanted to not have to do something I didn't enjoy, and generally I don't.
- I like EVE's economy. Any player can have any item in the game, if he has enough ISK; and there's no one set path to getting that ISK. Because travel is linear rather than through teleportation hubs (for example), there are even local economies in EVE.
- A couple of months into playing EVE, I created this character to try piracy. The very first time I fought another player, I was hooked. That adrenaline rush is what keeps me logging into EVE. Other MMORPGs had "no-drop" gear that couldn't be looted from players, but in EVE everything a target is carrying or is fitted with potentially drops. So there is profit for the victor, while at the same time the loser hasn't dropped anything he can only replace with a raid and hours of time.

I started playing 6 months ago out of curiosity. I continued playing out of pure emjoyment. After strapping on my first battleship I became hooked. Now is seems to be my drug of choice. I find myself distracted during meetings @ work trying to formulate a way to finish the lvl4 I'm soloing & planning my next skill set. I am positive some day I will be standing up in a room full of like minded people stating " Hello my name is Max and it's been x amount of days since I last logged in to eve" In short I play eve because I can't "F"ing stop. Yes I'm a newb. No I'm not stupid. |

I play eve for the Lag free intense fleet fights with hundreds of people trying to kick the crap out of eachother.... Ohh wait
serious now
For me i love every aspect of combat from the gank all the way to (server permitting) fleet fights) I love killing some poor unsuspecting ratter/miner/whatever and the ensuing you fail because.... in local. and the prospect of being ganked keeps me awake when im doing non combat stuff. The adrenalin rush from loosing "THAT SNINY..." is worth it alone or the prospect of mabu just getting one off someone else.
Mostly I love waking up on a Dat/Sun morning and wondering 1 where my ship is 2 what stuff I got and 3 if im even still in a ship and did I update my clone. EX Nano *** since 2006 |

Most of the points have been mentioned already why eve not wow.
I will add a few more of my own.
1)No Cliques In WOW you have to be in with the "COOL RAID" Leader to be picked for the 10 men or 25 men raids or you try to "pug" it. In EVE if this guy annoys the crap out of me I can do something to get my personal satisfaction.
2)Working for a living. Already been mentioned but to me this is a great one. Not chained to the PC for exp.(at least this MMO realized that their subscribers may have to go into work Monday to Friday)
3)Reputation. There may be no E-honor but your words your actions do have consequences in eve.
4)Pirates(or if they prefer pvpers) I am not one (not yet anyway)but these folks add a new facet to this game by adding almost certain death if you enter into their stomping grounds.
5)Content. a) New content in EVE is FREE you just have to download the patch NEW content in WOW is 50 bucks. b)In Eve you still skills do not become obsolete with a new patch in WOW introduction of new content is only targeted towards the new subscriber and getting him/her into purples as fast as possible. The guy that spent countless hours chewing glass in an instance gets nothing for the recognition of playing and paying for four years. (oh wait no you get a white baby polar bear as a pet for wow turning 4 years old)

Best space mmo. and it beats spending time in rl.
Maybe if I was surrounded by hot babes all the time eager to satisfy me I'd probably not play.

I work graveyard shift at a hotel and thus have absolutely nothing else to do. Crappy laptop and office computer can't run any decent games, so I play eve. It's that or endless youtube. I spend most of my time here mindlessly executing sansha/blood raider rats for the emperor. Periodically I go execute mission runners throughout empire. They make far too much isk for so little effort. Maybe I should self destruct my pod periodically.

I play Eve because no one has developed a Battletech / Mechwarrior MMO.
Past that:
Player driven economy is a game in itself. Intelligent play is rewarded. Death hurts. Player actions mold the game world. Accomplishing a goal in Eve seems to hold more meaning than in most MMO's.

I seriously don't know why I play any more. Perhaps for the ingame friends I have. And also, when I kill someone ingame, its fun.

i play it for money to play poker whilst training ships
finally getting up some decent xp and i hope to move to low sec at some point.
The nerfing of the missiles and the moving of most of agents has annoyed me to no end as to make the same amount of isk means more man hours :/

Hi Mynx.
My reasons for playing - I like the open-endedness (word?) that you simply don't get in normal games, and it is the best science-fiction online game out there atm.
I also like the fact that you do not have a silly, ridiculously endowed, unrealistic looking avatar running around the place ... for now. /me sighs and shakes head sadly.

Yours Mine His Closest Corp M8 while drunk... (well maybe)
CCP next patch can we have bigger explosions? I always felt the ship explosions were not big enough esp for battleships and up.
