6.6 this time. Haven't got round to reading it again though but did notice that they lowered the graphics score. (?)

"Mining is the only viable way to make money early on in EVE, and it's really one of the only viable ways of making money in the game at all."
LOL.
Eve's strongest point is that there are SO MANY viable ways to make money. It's so player-driven that it's got far more flexibility for advancement than any other MMORPG.
The guy also knocks the skill system, as though money isn't good as the primary measure if your character's advancement. He seems to actually want to do tedious experience point gaining to advance his skills. Currency is so much more robust and allows for so many more creative opportunities for advancement than just mindlessly raising experience points like in other games.
Yet another reviewer just doesn't get it. ___________________________________________

"Editor's Note 06/13/03: The preceding review replaces the EVE review that was originally posted on GameSpot, which we deemed insufficiently informative for our users. We are committed to providing our users with thoroughly comprehensive reviews of all games."
"Nevertheless, the combat itself is just a slugfest, where you'll merely watch as your enemy's hit points are depleted faster or slower than yours."
I'm glad they decided this review is now 'sufficiently informative' for their users.

Once again they show how little time they invested in playing this mmporg. Why did I even bother to read it...
BTW CCP - need more content and reduced down time during travels.....

probably the only time I'd agree with Setec on anything. The review was so far off the mark.
I took action and cancelled my gamespot conscription.
It is true mining is a good way to get started, but it is not the only option by any means of the imagination.
The skill system is amazing in this game. I know exactly when I'm going to level, I can plan ahead, and perhaps most important my skills are training while offline! Even mining in this game is much more mericful than others. Those who played UO know what I am talking about. For those who havent, in UO you would move your avatar up to the mountain side and double click on it to get him to strike the rock once. Then you would keep double clicking like mad to keep mining....it was horrible. Here you just lock, close to within range, and switch your lasers/drones on. Likewise, skill training does not involve repeatitive tasks, power hours or anything of the like. Combat in this game is so much more than a slugfest. There are so many options involved. Do I drop tons of cargo pods to lag incoming players like a coward or do I fight like a man? Do I go for a greater punch or greater defensive systems? Do I go for speed and range or close up and personal? Do I go with EW or raw power? The PvP fights, if anything, are exciting, i never had my heart beat so fast!
In addition to that, the game continues to provide options that make you productive while you are not online. Factories and Research slots continue to work away while you log off. You can create sell orders and make money while you are asleep at night. You don't have to meet the person face to face to sell something (except named pirate drops). You don't have to congregate in crowded area (and lag infested) area to sell your items.
This game has gotten so many things right that other mmorpg's failed to do. A few weeks before the game I was thinking of going back to UO. Thank god i found EVE on the shelves of best buy when I did. Great Job CCP!

I wrote them a email and posted on their forum that they should at least play a game before giving it a review. If they put as much time in to playing the game as they do ripping it they would know what their talking about. The problems they see in eve arent even the real issues. As for it being a mining only to make money game... wow are they off base.

I TOTALLY agree that they were off base in saying mining was the only way to make money. I guess the guy never bothered to venture into a low security area. I've been killing NPC pirates, refining or selling the loot and providing security for my Corp. mates and making out just fine.
They also griped that it was too big and lonely. Hello? It's space stupid! It's not supposed be little. EVE is also in it's infancy. It's short-sighted to think the community won't get any bigger.
He must have stayed in the noob areas and did exactly what his agent told him to. *sigh
P.S. At least IGN is giving EVE some nice coverage. --------------

Quote:
The problem is there's no real gameplay involved in the skill system, and in practice, that makes most activities in EVE seem rather pointless. In other role-playing games, when you're tediously killing one monster after another, tediously making one leather jerkin after another, or what have you, generally the act of doing so is rewarded by a gradual increase in your ability to perform that type of act. In EVE, the skill system and the actual gameplay are completely isolated from each other. You can go off looking for space pirates to blow up, but blowing them up yields just a little bit of money and maybe a decent item every now and then--the reward of seeing your actions directly affect your character's abilities is missing. So arguably the single most crucial trait of a role-playing game is completely absent from EVE.
This idiot thinks that mindlessly doing "tedious" (in his own words) tasks, is the "single most cruicial trait of a role-playing game".
This person really has no business reviewing a role-playing game at all. |

That statement about skills not training through use is also completely false. E.g., my mining skill is trained to level three which gives a base skill point value of 8000. Currently, that skill has 15013 points. Granted, this rate is too low to make it a viable method of increasing skills in general, but so what. That is why you have skill training in the first place. This reviewer probably didn't notice this in the two days he actually played the game.

What about the money needed to buy the skills? Doesn't grow on trees in EVE. He makes it sound like they're free. --------------

lol
what they seems to dont understant is that the skills you trained gives you +++ with your char but experienced in fighting testing weapons and technologies well thats all in your head thats is what you get . you can have all the skills and still suck if you have no practice in fighting the game is more about knowledge then everything else which makes it really fun
just my point of view

Actually I think apart from the reference to 'mining being the only/main source of income', its an excellent and thoughtful review ...

lol, your conscription? Didn't know they were that serious :-P I agree with you though, there's not hit or miss like in UO. And your mining laser doesn't break on you mid way through, causing you to either lug around extra tools or hike all the way back to town/rune your way out. Much more betterer this way :-D

I think the CCP developers would do quite well for themselves if they took the criticism in that review to heart.
Focusing on the publisher instead of the content may cause people to overlook valid criticism in the review. The reviewer admits killing mobs over and over again is tedious. What he does go on to indicate, and is correct, is that tedium is offset somewhat by seeing the rewards for that tedium sooner than you do in Eve.

Actually it's a good thing the reviewer did not go to low sec space. Can you imagine the review if he had ran across some of the seeder players?
Keep in mind that most of us over look a lot because we know what EVE can become. Look at every post than anyone had started and it is full of buts and whens. (When this is implimented it will rock, this is good but it could be better)
Considering that half of the listed stuff is not implemted or turned on, the review was more than generous with the rating. Will EVE be a 8, 9 or dare I say 10.. Could be in the near future but right now it isn't.
