I can't log into game to check out the items stats adjusted to my character so I thought i'd ask here...
If I have all the armour compensation skills trained to 4/5, will the resist bonus for passive energized resist plating be higher than active resist hardeners? For the purposes of mission running and installing the correct resists.

Only if you have a faction/deadspace/officer one that gives a resist of 40% or better. With T2 and the compensation skills at lvl 5 you would have 37.5*1.25=46.875 resist.

Comparing similar meta levels (i.e. T2 vs T2 or Deadspace vs Deadspace), active will always be about 5% better.

Mmm, which makes the armour compensation skills only good for PvP, because of EANMs?

Passive so there is no need for the cap to hold out, which is good being the cap is sucked out most of the time.

I use the Corpum A energized plating for my mission running Eos. A bit of an initial investment but well worth it as I can easily tank lvl 4s. I can use 1 nanobot accelerator and 1 auxiliary nano pump instead of 2 CCC rigs since I don't need active hardeners and almost have same resists but less cap usage and more repair amount. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Actives don't take too much cap to run so for PvE active is usually better. Once you start spending real money on A-type EANMs you can just as easily get X-type 64% active hardeners.
That said, if you get jumped in a mission with active hardeners you'll pop like a pinata as mission probers will always go after your cap first. So if you're under a wardec or missioning in lowsec passive hardeners may make sense.
PvE and PvP fits will always differ though. The comparison that I find most fitting is that PvP is a spring while PvE is a marathon. Passive resists and a buffer tank are a very viable fit in PvP but don't really suit themselves to PvE. Active, "slow and steady" tanks are pretty standard for PvE but don't work too well in anything larger than a small-scale PvP engagement.
TLDR: Active for PvE, watch out for NOS-ing Blood Raider missions.

I haven't done much PvP but my opinion is that cap isn't an issue since PvP engagements tend to be quick...compared to the long time doing lvl4s.
Speaking of which, what is the minimum SP you would think for lvl4s? I have lvlVs in all the essential rank 1s, in cap recharge, cap limit, repair rate, can use t2 hardeners, can't use t2 large guns though...have about 5.8mil SP...what would be the essential skills to have at V for it? In, say, a navythron (soldier, so gunnery is where my DPS is at) |

With the certification system being so new, I would have suggested using that as a benchmark, but I digress...
5.8mil SP and can use T2 large?! Work on your support skills. I seriously hope that the T2 large doesnt take more than 70% of your SP total. -

You know CCP doesnt care about it anyways? Otherwise most titans would get banned.
As for OP: train armor compensations to lv4 when you have spare time. They are useful for EANMs in some missions (drone miss's come to my mind) and in pvp (2x EANM gives you around 50% on all damage types and eat 72CPU - thats same amount as 2 hardeners give but those increase resists only on 2 damage types).
Pretty much using EANM (or if you are amarr - Adaptive Nano Plating t2) eanbles you to save on CPU and slots while gaining similiar resists.
As for shieldtank - compensation skills suck. My almost-maxed shield skills alt doesnt have even lvl1 in shield compensations, they are that useless.

They are usefull if you do lvl5 in full-passive shieldtanker like drake, nighthawk or onyx(neut towers, duh) They are also usefull in pvp when you're neuted dry - invulns still give some all-around 10-15% resists when off instead of 1%

Actives are better for PvE. You don't need to worry about cap in PvE and they use very little anyway.
