Right now I have my main character and he is always training.
I have another character who I strictly use to look at markets in neighboring regions. Which honestly doesn't sit completly well with me even though "he" is a member of my corp.
I've little choice if I'm to use the other character at all. Effectivly training him to be capable of doing other things and/or having an active role in eve would penalize my first character and I'm not willing to do that.
I would like to have all three characters in play with active roles in eve but... again since training my second or third (if I ever create him/her) would effectivly make all my characters second class citizens in eve. Once you split your training time between characters you've penalized them all.
I have things I would like to do with alternative characters that would be very interesting but ... You see my delima.
Thank you for your interest and comments.

A simple solution to your dilemma is to super-specialize your alts via character selection. If your main is a super miner, build a specialize manufacturer, and a specialized warrior. Then you won't need to train them as much, or if you do train them do so in the fields they specialize in and the time penality will be reduced considerably.

Personally I agree with wardish. Whilst I see the other points, I still think each character is and should be their own seperate character, able to train con-currantly with other characters.
Lots of us are not power gamers, and only casual gamers, and it does make it hard for us to compete in similar situtations to people training 24x7.
Yes I know there are pros and cons to it, but I do agree with his statement.

I dont see the point of limiting training to just one character anyway. It's not like you can play them all simultaneously. It is now also impossible for e.g. a family to share an account and develop their characters without hindering the progress of the others. They have to buy multiple copies of the game and register multiple accounts...

Alternate characters leave too much open to exploit, and I use that term loosely as you'll just get "mules" or "dupes" in widespread use.
I can't see how the system can be expanded from it's current position without another exploit hole being opened up, they are already considering time limits on switching characters.
TBH, having alternate characters defeats one of the objectives of EVE, that is teamwork, if you want a "scouting" ability then use another player in your corp.
There is nothing stopping you opening another account :)

I don't disagree that if training were opened back up so all characters could train simultaniously that there would be people misusing it. It's a fact of life that any capability will be misused by some. And this will have to be addressed by the gm's.
But, I think that isn't enough of a reason to criple the 3 character basis of eve. One of the selling points I really looked forward to was having 3 characters I could use to do things in very different ways. Another point that I really like was the capability of a character training 24/7. I found it hugely dissappointing to see the combination so broken.
Sure, I could do the speciallized characters. But that is in the same vein as using one for a mule or as a corp theif or something. I'm really not wanting to have 3 cogs in a uber character. I believe that if a character is going to have a truely active role in eve (as apposed to a station manager who lives in a dark hole on his station and never sees another soul) then he/she is going to require a great deal of training.
On my main character I devoted most of the first two weeks to just training learning skills up to improve the long run. I've almost a million skill points now and I could have more but I haven't been perfectly efficient at using my training time.
In closing, Although I understand the problems of having the training opened up and the decision to close it down, I disagree with that decision/judgement. I believe that honest players shouldn't be punished or restricted in order to restrict dishonesty unless all other options have been exhausted first.

Make all three characters fully playable and fully trainable... The abusing is quite limited anyway... sure, you can mine with one guy and make money to a second... it's not like you can do anything with the second one while mining with the first anyway...

I don't get it anyway. Why bother having three characters if you can only train one at a time and (potentially) have to wait before switching?
Instead of putting all sorts of limitations on the alternate characters, why not just limit players to a single character? The end result is about the same.
