Edited by: Discordia Tzu on 01/12/2008 01:06:58 Greetings;
I'm running into an issue where is Eve will crash and hard lock the PC upon launch when in Windowed mode. This has happened since the last patch.
When launched in full screen, there are no issues, glitches, or anything else of interest.
Also of note, there are no crash reports in the event viewer, or logs generated. It's a clean black screen crash and reboot.
This is the *only* game it happens in also.
My DxDiag can be found at this Google Docs Link
I'm running the following:
EVGA nVidia 790i Ultra Motherboard Two EVGA nVidia GTX280's in SLI 8GB of DDR3 RAM at 1333 8-8-8-21 Intel Quad Core Q9300 @ 3.5ghz

Try turning off "Reboot on error" (found under My Computer, Properties, Advanced somewhere) and see if you get a BSOD. Write down error description and error code for googling purposes. Or report here, maybe fellow podsters can assist...

Tried, there is no crash log.
Again, I can play other games in windowed mode, including Farcry 2, etc just fine. Eve is the only one that black screen reboots without a crash or errors in the Event Viewer.
Eve runs perfectly however in full screen mode |

Same thing is happening here. Full screen is fine, windowed lasts about 10 seconds before completely crahing the entire system. No probs running more than a few accounts full screen.
I have a brand new system, so it's not an 'old os' thing...
i7-920 cpu, asus p6t deluxe mobo, 2 nvidia 260 in sli, 6 gb triple channel ddr3, vista 64 ultimate.

Edited by: Recluse Viramor on 05/12/2008 02:50:17 I'm running into this as well, insta system reboot.
I just upgraded to a SLI setup with an identical XFX GTX 260 core 216 BLACK. I had no issues like this before adding the 2nd card.
Running on Vista ultimate EVGA 780i mobo 4GB OCZ DDR2 ram, 5-5-5-17 Intel e6850

Yep, it's the sli messing things up.
After I set up the sli so 1 card was working as normal and the other card only worked on providing 16x antialiasing, things worked just fine. And it's easy enough to set things back for when you want to play farcry 2 or something, doesn't even need a reboot.
So, I guess this should be bug-reported?

How would I got about setting my SLI to work like that?

From what I've read here SLI antialiasing doesn't put antialiasing load on a single card but uses both. I'm now using this however it hasn't effected the EVE crash issue. Further testing indicates that this isnt just an EVE issue either, apparently any game will crash in windowed mode.
I'm wondering though if its something unique to my setup, something unique to the latest drivers when using dual displays (which I'm using), or unique to SLI in general.

I have the same setup and same problem. The only difference is that I have less and faster memory. I also have crash problems with World of Warcraft. Crashes are only happening when SLI is enabled. I have successfully run the FarCry2 game, Furmark and 3DMark03, that comes with the boards without problems in SLI mode. I have reinstalled everything and have talked to EVGA tech support and still have problems after all the updates and the tests. Houston we have a problem. There seems to be a pretty major issue with these boards in SLI mode. If you search for the issue on the internet you will find a bunch of hits. Any ideas?

For ATI, the new drivers (9.2) were just released. Try those out and see what happens ----------------------------------- "What can go wrong, will go wrong." |

SLI is your problem here. When playing eve, disable one card.

I have this exact same problem. Only I have it in fullscreen AND windowed. I am running GTX285OC, 8gb ram, q9650, Vista64. I cant seem to find anything to fix it... I was told by a buddy that we needed to turn AA off, but there is no option for that ingame. Ya'll know how to do that through the launch file? like -AA or something at the end?

Just a bit of info.If you are running a dual gpu setup, both gpu's will only work in fullscreen. So say a 4870x2 in windowed mode will only use 1 gpu,the other is just deadweight doin nothing. This is also the case for x-fire and sli set ups.So basically multi gpu setup =fullscreen.if you want to run yer games in window mode dont bother buying multi gpu rigs, stick to single gpu set up or yer just wasting money.this is at least until ati/nvidia put out a solution. Now does this help yer crashing issues, nope, but why buy a dual gpu rig and try to run it in a manner that nulls the second gpu.

I'm getting the exact same error, since switching to a eVGA GTX-295. Full screen works fine, but either swapping to windowed mode insta-locks, or booting the client in windowed mode locks the computer up after about 10 seconds. Was a solution ever found for this?

I'm also having this problem. Games running in Windowed Mode stop responding and force a hard reboot.
System Specification: Motherboard: Asus P5E-VM HDMI CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 'Wolfdale' @ 3.00GHz (1333FSB) Memory: Corsair 4GB DDR2 Dominator @ 5-5-5-15 Latency Graphics: Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870X2 2048MB GDDR5 Operating system: Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Service Pack 1
I've tried everything I can think of to fix this problem:
- Updated all drivers/firmware for just about every component.
- Tested every component in my computer for any kind of error/fault/anomoly.
- Optimised my cooling system & case airflow to reduce GPU load temperature to sub-40C and CPU temperature to sub-50C.
- Tested pretty much every combination of graphic options possible via Catalyst Control Center.
- Tested pretty much every combination of in-game graphic settings (including the old Classic client).
I didn't find any hardware errors at all (although since I didn't swap them out for other components I suppose there's room for software incompetence), and the temperature improvements didn't make any differences at all. Two things that really did help were disabling forced Anti-Aliasing via the CCC panel and changing the option Interval Immediate to Interval One under the in-game advanced graphic settings.
Disabling forced AA completely solved some Crash-To-Desktop issues I was having and setting the Interval to One (AKA Vertical Synchronisation) reduced the peak temperature of my GPUs from 95C (apparently this card can run at over 105C safely, but damn..!) to about 65C on load before the optimisation reduced it further to 35-40C~.
I see lots of people saying that SLI and multi-GPU cards are to blame. I also see another post which claims that secondary GPUs are deadweight when running applications in Windowed Mode. Shouldn't these statements be mutually exclusive, or am I missing something here? Also, just to answer a question previously fielded: the reason people might purchase a multi-GPU card and then play EVE online in Windowed Mode is that EVE is a timesink - by this I mean that it isn't a game you really play to have your face blown off by intensive and expensive (resource-wise) graphics - not to say it isn't pretty of course. A lot of people who play EVE also play other games which are worth running in full-screen.
Besides, even if you're running EVE in fullscreen mode you're not going to see a performance upgrade if you have a decent card. If I remember correctly the eyes can't differentiate anything over about 30 frames per second or so. Most televisions operate at around 60FPS, but this is because they use Interlacing (so they're pretty much running at 30FPS). With Interval Immediate my system was running EVE online at between 150-200FPS - far more than is necessary and ultimately just a needless strain on the GPU. Also, your monitor will bottleneck your FPS - If your monitor runs at 60Hz then you won't ever see anything over 60FPS.
So, anyway... has anyone been able to determine the EXACT cause of this problem and the solution for it? It seems like a pretty specific problem rather than a general graphic related problem that could be caused by just about anything.
