Okay, fair enough. Pods are the world of EVE and they ain't going anywhere.
What if I rephrased the question slightly: What if there were different QUALITY of pods, from cheap liquid filled goo-tubes to expensive space-age ones where you float peacefully at the center in zero-gravity, and your interface is done by small and wireless electrodes placed sparingly around your body?
Or am I really barking up the wrong tree here? Sounds like I may be.

I like to imagine I control my ship using a mouse and keyboard, and see my ship's status and the space around it via a monitor. But that's just me.

A) 1. Buy the EVE novel. 2. Find the part with the cross-capsule variant (facilities to leave pod onboard) and read it. 3. Read the rest of the novel, because it's ****ing AWESOME. 4. Pretend that your ship is a cross-capsule variant. 5. ???? 6. PROFIT!
or
B) 1. Don't give a damn, imagine you are a normal captain that jumps really quick into an escape pod when his ship blows up and there he hooks up to a machine that.... (in short: make s**t up) 2. When ambulation comes, ignore the cutscene where you leave the pod, assuming you won't simply be able to set an option to auto-skip it, or if there will be one at all [I hope there is]. 3. ???? 4. PROFIT!

Sounds cool, I am buying the novel today!
I guess then what I am asking is for this type of cross-capsule variant to be considered by The Powers That Be to be a roleplay option for us.

Again, I like that idea a lot too and wish that it could be considered acceptable RP by TPTB and the rest of the player community.
Good stuff.

also, OP. your idea is old as the hills, and no matter how much we might like first person control. it isnt possible without sharding the servers, and that is never going to happen.
im in australia. when i double click in space to make a manual course change, it takes about three seconds for the ship to change directions. that means that if i were first person controlling the ship, everything i did would take three seconds to happen. imagine trying to control an interceptor moving at 7km/s like that.
Well...a little off-topic from the OP, buuut...I thought in one of CCP's presentations at fanfest they mentioned wanting to try out joystick flight.
