Pity, that seems to have been a much more pleasant community than the current one is. Not all change and evolution is for the better apparently. ___

The change is due to the insistance of some folks that EVERYONE must play one 'type' of Eve.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

Based on some forum exploring I just did, I estimate the community took a hostile downturn some time between Revelations I and II. I blame warp to zero and the drake.

When they added the drake in Rev I or II they increased the starting SP of characters to the point where you can start in a cruiser almost, making a lot of the older players (RMR and earlier) very... uh, cynical and snappish.
I knew quite a few new players who had just hit their first 1mil SP who re-rolled their characters after that patch.
CCP also introduced the more idiot proof version of their tutorials around that time and, well, you get the idea.
And yes, I am one of those "NO U" and "Your stuff, gimme" people ------------

I miss that time, i remember bragging about how MY MMORPG had civilized forums to my friends who played "normal" MMORPG's. Ah the memories...

I know I was one of the angered ones when they increased starting SP and decreased learning skill requirements. I know I'm going to sound bitter writing this, but those things really changed the new player experience. It removed a lot of the work your way up factor that I thought was an integral part of the early game. IMHO they should have broadened the number of skills you started with, not letting you start with a 4 or 5 in anything.

Hey! I know a few people irl who tried EVE after i started, some because they saw me had so much fun and that the game looked awesome, but they all quitted very fast. They couldnt grasp it. Was too much stuffz to learn. So they gave up and played something less complex like WoW or WAR.
I like complex things however, even tho i havent grasped everything. I am happy with understanding basic tanking mechanics and dps types, fittings, a wee bit about e-war,etc. but i dont need to know every aspect of a game to have fun. Still you cant say this game is one of the ez ones, it one of the most complex i have played.

It is true that the forum community seems to have become more moronic in recent years.
Infact I was just thinking about this yesterday. A culture of reflexivly responding with tired nonsense and hate seems to have developed, along with a serious aversion to any sober discussion of game mechanics. ---- Welcome to the EVE Onlne forums, a low IQ society. |

I agree about the period being a good learning period, removing it also pretty much removed t1 frigate usefulness since you can be in a t2 frigate in just a few days or a cruiser within a few hours. Probobly good for the game in general tho since so many players would quit if it took 3 weeks to be in a cruiser these days.

It's a "normal" (happens in all that I know of) MMO-community progression.
Might sound weird to some, but WoW, WAR, Everquest + Lineage I (doesn't happen to followup games), SW:G, etc, they were all friendly and helpful in beta - and early P2P-days. Just like EVE.
What happens after that, is that the game is suddenly a product, not so much under development. Alot more players arrive. Alot of people have expectations, less understanding for bugs and delays, etc. The perspective in general change.
Details change from game to game, but the progression in the community is the same. Getting kind of used to it myself, eventually you (at least I do) start to distance yourself a bit. Relax. Either that or I'm getting older. Just don't tell my parents, they'll whine about how young I am.

ITT: Yet another forum discusses the phenomenon affecting the entire Internet as if it is a local occurrence.
That period seemed nice, but a little boring. Who would I have done sigs about back then?
Still, as with almost all things on the Internet, the old days were better. -

Oh, but thats only half the truth. I was one of the "new ones" that started up with 5 skill gunnery etc. However, this is very useful in the beginning for doing missions easily. So its an easy start. Nothing more than that!
But hell no the game itself isnt always easy! i am still learning, still building up skills, still i am poor i need more isk for T2 ships etc. I have played for almost a year now. But with many breaks.
But you mention piloting a T2 ship after a few days or a cruiser?! Whats the point in piloting such a ship after a few days when you havent got the support skills to use it effectively? I see no reason apart from seeing yourself in a shiny thingy and drooling over your keyboard lol, or buying one cheap at some trade hub and riding out to sell it for good isk at some station out in pvp-wonderland lolz :) (I did once with a T1 transport i had got cheap, lmao some dude paid me 6mill isk for it.)
T2 ships costs good isk and its wasted isk for a newbie if ya ask me! When you lose one ship like that, what you get back from insurance money is crap. So dont buy one until you can afford to lose it.
I worked my way up and got skills for large guns topped, T2 gun skills and got the tanking skills topped etc. it took many months to get the support skills, topping drone skills and navigational skills to a reasonable level. And at that time i had earned enough isk to buy a T1 battleship, and by that time skills had gotten about sufficient enough to use that ship with its intended weaponery and tanking fit. In addition it was sufficient after some months to fly T2 interceptor and smaller T2 vessels effectively as tacklers. But not withing days or weeks!

If idiots are stable at x% of the population you will get a greater number of idiots if the population rises. Idiots being idiots need to compensate for their idiocy by being more visible than the average intelligent person. That means the more idiots you have, the more idiots will post idiocy on the forums.
Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Even a year ago the forums were mostly dominated by pirates and PVPers. Recently we've seen a massive influx of carebears. Not that carebears are inherently bad but whenever you have a mix of carebear and pirate you get trouble. All players in general just get more annoyed, and that irritation tends to bring post quality down in general.
How about this: I am a pirate and a carebear :D
First: I like to gank for profits. Im not big hitter im rather a scumbag and a thief but i have honour. Maybe sometimes i am not being honourable and do stuff just for the lulz, but to some degree. I like also to help new players at least. Some see me as a nice person :)
Second: I am a carebear because i know there is a great deal of players that like to gank noobs. Not for profit but because that's whom they are able to gank! Or they have just formed a fleet for destruction of anyone they see. That might be fun for some people, but its not easy for the new players then. However if you do something for the lulz, you are always excused! That is the law and the code of honour for everyone, including pirates.
And finally: Godwin's Law comes also into play here: As the discussions and the flame wars gets hotter, the probability of someone mentioning the NGzis or HitlOr approches closer and closer to 100%.
Has it reached this point yet?
