Ok, so now that its been out for what... a year? I have finally trained thermodynamics. I attempted to use it in a fight against 181st (they've wardeced my alliance), where I was in a hyperion. All I tried to overload was my guns, nothing else. So my question is, how do you know how close a module is to dying from heat? I saw on the interior of the little circly thing in the middle of the HUD a little bar that went up and red appeared in it. I also saw red appearing on my guns in my highslots. However, I have no idea which little section of red I should be worried about?
And yes, I did try using the search feature... and it failed me... bigtime...

when the red around the modules reaches around the circle it'll blow.. you gotta be careful. you can monitor the damage progression in percentages by moving your cursor over the button. no one really knows the inner mechanics of the heat system.. but it does kick ass.
in a hype with t2 guns you'll prolly have some trouble heating your guns for more than 40 seconds "SPEED + GANK = SPANK... Spank that ***** up" |

my exact fit (killmail is probably up by now... so its not like its a secret )
Highs 8 neutron 2's
Mids 1 100mn mwd 1 1 point 2 2 x-5 webbers 1 medium cap booster
Lows 1 DCU 2 1 1600mm RT plate 2 eanm 2's 2 magstab 2's
Rigs 3 trimarks
I put overheat on for about 20 seconds - can't say that i really noticed that big an increase in dps when I did so though. leastways, the raven I was shooting survived me, though that could be because of his 6 friends showing up when he got to about half shields...

lol? I thought it was funny... though not exactly on topic. However, it doesn't usually take long for things to get off topic on the eve-o forums

Train Thermodynamics to at least 4, this will slow down the heat damage considerably. When the little area of green, (on top of the module) is close to being gone, right click that module it will give you an option to repair & make sure you have a good supply of thermal paste in your cargohold aswell. Some good skills to train up are: Nanite Operation & Nanite interfacing, Nanite Operation gives you 5% reduction in nanite consumption per level & Nanite Interfacing gives you a 20% increase in damaged module repair amount per second.

This and don't forget, ANYONE can use nanite paste. The skills make it more effective. Just put the nanite paste in cargo and rightclick a damaged modual in space and select repair.
Training Thermodynamics to 5 helps mods last longer overheated. I would recommend it.

I've trained thermo to level 4 and it's been great, got me out of some real tight spots, the problem is half the bloody time I forget to turn it on until halfway through the fight. It does save your life though, overheating the shield booster on the Sleipnir and it can tank a hell of a lot.

can you repair modules WHILE they are being overheated? Or only after your turn overheating off? And can you repair while they are firing but not overheated? ie, I overheat guns, they get near 'boom' i turn off overheating and start repairing while they continue firing.

You can repair modules with nanite repair paste (i.e., in space) under the following conditions: a: the module is inactive b: the module is not overloaded (so the green bar has to be dark) c: the module is less than 100% damaged You cannot activate modules that are being repaired. __________________________________

And a shout out to Arazel Chainfire for getting heat. It is probably the most generally useful combat skill I have found.

You need to worry about both sections of red. The section around the center of your HUD is the heat build up for a given rack (High, Medium, or Low), and the section around your modules indicates how much damage they've taken. Overheating a module doesn't damage it directly; it builds up heat and that heat can damage any module on the rack. The damage is somewhat random, but obviously the higher the heat levels the faster things get damaged. Any module can be damaged by heat, even ones that are not active or even capable of being overheated.
The three things needed to overheat effectively are good skills, nanite repair paste, and offline modules to soak up heat.
The good skills reduce the heat damage that your modules will take and also makes repairing them after the fact more efficient. This last point is important; repairing a badly damaged module can take what seems like an eternity so Nanite Interfacing really helps with this.
The nanite repair paste is needed to repair modules to let you overheat them repeatedly.
When I said that heat damage is somewhat random, that was assuming that all of the modules in a rock were online. offline modules are more likely to take heat damage than online ones so you can use offline modules as 'heat sinks' in order to overheat your online modules longer. This is what has been happening with a lot of whips with utility high-slots.
Enjoy, and stay cool. ;-) -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |
