One of my favorite reviewers, Yahtzee, from the Escapist reviewed EvE online, For those who dont know his review system, he hates everything that isent fallout 3.
Anyway you can find the review here, and the EvE trailer after it.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/208-Eve-Online
So my question is, why the heck is EvE puting adds on this site when the site compleatly rips EvE a new one? Isent that kind of silly?

Yeah this got posted on the forums a while back.
It's a little funny, but frankly he rather fails at bashing eve. Most of what he says is bull****. As much as is wrong with this game, he really just sounds like he's too stupid to get through the start of the game. - - - - - - - - - Do not use dotted lines - - - - - - - If you think I'm awesome, say BOOO BOOO!! - Ductoris Neat look what I found - Kreul Hey, my marbles |

The only reason im asking anything is because EvE is plastered all accross the website this week.
I would honestly say he gives a good reason why noobs dont pick up EvE, your first 2 weeks are a mega pain in the ass.
If CCP were to do anything for EvE, making the first few weeks to few months more directed at something, better nudges or what not (hell a super long mission chain with good rewards for noobs) so that new pilots could really see what the game is like we might get some real fresh blood.
Honestly I like that idea, its what all other games do, sandbox is still there, but give the new player a good long mission chain custom built just for new players in crappy ships and we could see a whole lot more of them.

EVE actually was advertising on the escapist before Yahtzee reviewed it, as you can tell from watching the review.
Of course we know that the review doesn't really give an accurate portrayal of why EVE is appealing - and let's be honest, if you're picking up the game, with nobody to guide you through it, the first 14 days are pretty lame - but all the people who take Yahtzee's reviews seriously (a number of people do) won't know that and the advertising is probably going to be lost on them.
For my part, i HATE it when I have to sit through 10 seconds of anything when i want to watch a video on the escapist and it sort of embarrasses me to see EVE forcing me to do that too __________________________________

There was a thread like this in OOPE like, yesterday...but long and short of it:
For one, full agreement with Yahtzee's review of EVE is akin to swearing off swimming based on advice from someone who hates water and whose sole experience is limited to wading in ankle-deep water with floaties on. He has points that do make sense, ofc, but the vast majority of it is misconceptions based on his refusal to seriously try the game and instead just rate empire missionrunning
Of course, I think of this as part of a somewhat larger symptom of modern game reviewing not really being able to properly deal with MMO game ratings
Secondly, not advertising on sites just because you don't get good review from one guy there is pretty absurd; it only serves to encourage yes-men game reviews that laud stupid gimmick features and pretty graphics instead of gameplay (I'm looking at you, corporate gaming review machine) _____________________

Dude, eve is already much easier for newbies now than it was when I started 2 years ago.
It pains me to hear people complaining about how hard this game is.
Back in my day we didn't start with 800k ****ing SP, and the third mission they sent you on was worlds collide, which always killed you. There was no "new player experience" worth mentioning. They practically hold your hand now.

Are you sure it isn't an advertising company putting the ads rather than CCP themselves... ofc CCP could withdraw the ads but I'd say they generate traffic anyway and just because someone dislikes X doesn't always have to mean you never conduct business with said party.

Publicity, good or bad is still helpful. Many people probably saw his review and thought it can't be that bad or were intrigued a bit but by his review and decided to EVE out. Get enough people that way and some will start sticking around. Only thing worse than bad publicity is no publicity.

CCP has already stated before they don't pick and choose where their ads get placed.
CCP pays a company to advertise for them and the advertising company puts out ads sometimes randomly, sometimes targeted (gaming review sites). |

If you don't take it so personally his Eve review is actually quite funny, I'm sure you can see elements of truth in it as well even though they are dressed up in 10 layers of sarcasm.

It is a type of advertising that looks to see what your interests are then downloads the appropriate ad banner from a pool and plays it. Or something like that.

blame that on google-analytics.com they display ads related to site you often visit... in this case, its pretty silly IMO. because the ads also target ppl who visit EVE`s website .
this could also be the same case as OP, probably he`s the only one who are seeing those ads, people who play a lot of WoW probably going to see WoW related ads instead

I suppose it's better than getting advertisements for crap you don't have any interest in it. Then again, Ad Block Plus makes that discussion almost entirely moot. :) Best damn browser plugin invented, imho.
Anyway it's not just based a single website, but common interest. If EVE had more of a fantasy flair to it I'm sure you'd be seeing ads for a lot wider series of titles. Besides, why wouldn't they want to advertise on a site where gamers frequently go? There's plenty to see on Escapist other than the Yahtzee reviews.

The problem is that this guy doesn't like MMOs. All MOOs have the same elements he doesn't like (simplistic click-to-begin-your-autoattack combat, constant in-your-face confrontation with numerical garbage and other immersion breakers, utterly tedious to play solo).
His review just stated that Eve has the same gameplay as every other MMO with a few minor differences. Which is true, but not particularly helpful or informative to people who do like MMOs and might be looking to choose one based on those differences.
