Edited by: Doc Iridium on 06/12/2008 05:44:57 A concept that I have not yet seen in EVE that would be interesting is the "spinal mount" concept.
In essence, a ship design philosophy that builds a ship around a very large weapon for it's class.
In the real world, a successful design of this type would be the A-10 Warthog. A really big gun with a aircraft built around it.
In EVE, especially with modular ships, it would be interesting to see the ability to put a single, highly accurate oversized weapon in a ship, but still allow some decent supplemental fitting.
Frigate -> integral medium weapon Destroyer -> two integral medium weapons Cruiser -> integral large weapon Battlecruiser -> two integral large weapons Battleship -> integral capital class weapon
The powergrid and highslot counts for these shipclasses would be significantly reduced. highslots might even be restricted to only utility items, though it would be nice if the larger classes of ships could mount a couple small weapons for antidrone / antifrigate defense.
These spinal mount weapons should hit with devastating power, but have really crappy tracking as compared to what the weapons of the same size ship might have. Frigate/destroyer sized spinal mount ships might be able to reliably hit most battleships without special assistance, but would have difficulty hitting anything smaller that was moving, and would not be nearly as agile as their T1/T2 contemporaries
People have asked for battleships suitable for taking down POS'es without huge blobs. These would do it. A gang of three or four spinal mount frigates/destroyers against a decently fitted T1/T2 pvp battleship could go either way. Add any sort of support ship to the mix on the battleship's side, and the spinal mount frigates would get their butts handed back to them.
In essence - ships that are built from the ground up as high DPS extreme range snipers for their size class, or ship core modules that allow us to build them like that.
Obviously new skills would be required for such specialized weapons systems. Well, I've said my piece - wait, is that Veldspar over there? Woot! |

Tech 3 ships have already been anounced to be lego ships, I doubt your spinal mount would be considered for tech 3.

Er, why not? All it would be is the base ship with an integral weapon. You can lego on it all you want, within whatever limitations CCP chooses for the base ship. Well, I've said my piece - wait, is that Veldspar over there? Woot! |

I think it has potential...
for instance the caldari Rokh has always looked to me like it should have one masive rail cannon protruding from the front...
it would be good to build a ship arround a weapon or role rather than fitting to a standard ship..

All 4 tier 3 battlehips seem to have been designed with the idea of a "spinal" or "integral" mounted oversized weapon. It's only a matter of time for that T2 class to be released.
And the A-10 is hardly a really big gun with an aircraft built around it. The gun that was put on it wasn't one of it's main design considerations at the time of it's conception, but I digress...
