So..I postponed the purchase of a new media player a bit due to financial constraints and simply not needing one atm, but I still need one for feb/march so I am still looking around. I thought I had found a nice possible toy in the creative Zen but after carefully skimming through a large number of reviews I've dropped it due to the SD-card issues, plastic feel and inability to properly drag and drop files.
The Zen X-fi is slightly better but seems to suffer from the same SD card issues and to top it off, is more expensive and heavier.
So here I am still looking for something that will play mp3s and (converted) video, has at least 4gb of own memory with the ability to expand or 8gb standalone, will work with windows XP, has a good battery and a pricetag of 120 euros max.
I've held and tested the iPod touch but I find it too bulky, limited in features and (very) expensive. The other zen products (stone etc) all seem to have that plastic feel with very small display sizes, same for philips. The Cowon iAudio 7 looks good but it seems quite large..
Does the Eve public, in all its wisdom, have any other suggestions?

Sandisk Sansa is what I am looking at. Two Ifails nd they're driving me insane. I can't stand MP3 players that can only be synchronised with one PC only, it's stupid and is only a way to force people to buy more. Farjung is my God

Sandisk Sansa is an amazing little mp3 player. I picked one up last year and haven't regretted it. You can load Rockbox on to these things and it handles it quite well.
My only complaint is the screen is easy to scratch up. I was relatively careful at first using the protective sleeve for it that comes in the box but after a year and a half of daily usage it has a few scratches on it. Doesn't affect usability but you can tell it's been used quite a bit :)
I picked up a few units for my family last Christmas and found out they now sell "v2" models. These units do not support Rockbox and can be a little dodgy if you transfer files via media players (instead of just setting up the player as a usb stick for file transfer).

How do you differentiate between version one and two and does it really matter? If it does please clarify. I had no intentions of using any media player, whether it be WMP, Winamp, MediaMonkey or whatever else there is on the market to transfer files on the device, but I would like to have confirmation that it will be ok. Friend of mine bought Ifail LOL a while back and it took her a week to get it working. I would stay away from Apple as iTunes is a horrible programme. The beauty of the Sansa is that it can be plugged into any PC and music can be copied to it. Very simple and easy to use. Farjung is my God

honestly? I just tend to buy cheap flash players that aren't built by any of the big names. You can get a 2Gb one for about ú15 if you look in the right places. No software to install, no bulls***, just plug them in, drag the files you want over, press play. If it breaks (and they tend to be surprisingly robust) you can buy four more and still come in under the price of an equivalent-sized iPod or Zen or whatever..
Of course, the advantage to a named 200Gb one is you can just drag and drop your whole music collection over, rather than spending a few minutes deciding which tracks you most want. Last time I tried that, though, I spent more time skipping tracks than I did listening to music. -

I just ordered one of these
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Player-MicroSD-Expansion/dp/B000ETVKHE
For $39 refurbished. I'll let you know how it works.
Totally better than Ipod's, which at 3x the price, you can't even drag and drop onto.

You can find out which one it is by looking at the back of the actual player. For example this player has e270 on the bottom right of the player (top right of the pic). The v2 would be listed as e270v2
If you don't need rockbox, the v2 series should be ok. I haven't had a problem using the regular file transfer mode to move music onto the player with any of the Sansa e-series. If worst comes to worse, Sandisk should have firmware updates available on their website.

Seeing as how I'll be getting one of these, what exactly does rockbox do?

? Apple programs are some of the easyest to use programs I have found. The ipods have the BEST UI ever... My ipod took about 2 seconds to get working; plug into itunes, boom it works. Simple as that really.

Rockbox is an open source firmware which adds extra features such as extra file format support and games. You can find a generic feature list on their website.

Yeah, except I'd have to repurchase my whole music collection. I don't even own it, I just "buy the right to move it once."
Uhh, no.
