Has anyone tried reaching the "border" of any star-system in eve? Is there a border? There must be a place where if you fly far enough towards the edge of the system map you would stop.... just curious if anyone has wasted enough time to see what happens.

There's no border. Many people have ended up with safespots hundreds of AU away from any object. I personally have got one about 400 AU away from anything.
Going 10 km/s, which is probably faster then any ship can go now that the speed nerf is in, it would take about 173 days to fly 1 AU. That's not even counting the lost hour each day to downtime.
If you had been flying at sub-warp since the game launched about 5 1/2 years ago, you would have traveled approximately 11.3 AU. Again, not including downtime for server maintenance or expansions. ----------------------------------------------------

Wow, how is that possible based on your statement below:

That would be 69,200 days or 190 years. Were the pre-nerf speeds really that much faster?

Now I am really curious. These would be beautiful safespots free from meddlesome probers...

Back in the day, you could warp to anywhere in space... the limit was your cap capacity.

At one point you had the ability to initiate warp to another star system without using a stargate. Of course your capacitor would keep running out so you'd have to keep initiating it over and over again. Also, 1 light year is equal to about 63,000 AU. So you run into a similar problem as with trying to fly by sub-warp speeds, i.e., you would die of boredom before you even traversed a fraction of the distance.
In addition, you used to be able to use observator deep space probes to create what is called "deep safespots." Observators used to have a scan deviation of up to 90 AU, meaning, when you probed for something the result could drop you up to 90 AU from your initial target. People used to create safespots farther and farther away from any object, in an attempt to be virtually unreachable. That was changed in a patch that improved the efficacy of probes.
Neither of those methods now exist and the only way to get a hold of these safespots is to find someone who still has the bookmark that was originally created.
It should be noted that observator probes, the probe which supposedly can probe down anything in a system, has a range of 1000 AU. So theoretically that may be the outer limit of the system. What happens when you reach it is unknown as far as I know. ----------------------------------------------------

When I started playing 2 years ago, I sent a scout to try to reach the outer edge of Rens. Each night, before going to bed, I would point him towards the outside of the system. On October 12, 2008, I reached..... Jita 4-4. I called the xenocs I met there... Indians. --------
