Say what you want but it's a great anti-RMT-er method. Besides, it will most likely be calibrated so you spend on average about as much cash as you'd spend paying the subscription. I reserve the right to complain only after it gets sucky... meanwhile, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt

i used to do that. give people the benefit of the doubt. now i'm cynical.
as the saying goes, show me a cynic and i'll show you a disillusioned optimist. (something like that)
something just smells crash and burn about it. but on the up side, if i can try the game out free of a subscription then if i dont like it i'm out scot free.
maybe they can implement it so it isn't gay, but i wont be holding my breath. ---------- Seasons Greetings and have a Happy Alvis Time |

See, that's the spirit Worst case scenario, you're out a couple of hours of downloading and a couple of hours of gameplay.

This is Sony you're talking about Akita. They'll make you pay Ç55-60 for the game, no subscription but loads of micro-transactions for everything. They will undoubtedly make sure there is little to no endgame PvE content aswell. And loads and loads of grinding ofcourse. (undisguised grinding that is, not disguised within a storyline)
Call me a cynic, but given what's been coming out of the gaming industry lately (ie. mostly crap) I feel that my ideas are justified.

This is correct.
I can see why people dislike micro payments, as it means you can buy advantages, but remember that someone worked for that money. On the positive side, you get to decide how much "subscription" you pay for each month. And best of all, if you want to play an mmo on the side for a while you get the chance to. Which means a slight chance of you getting hooked, while with a subscription you would have never bothered and there was never a chance for you to be a source of income. Trials for mmo's never work quite as good since the time limit is often quite short. A trial where you can get to a certain level, such as chronicles of spellborn is supposedly offering is a good way around this, but still not as good as the micro payment system.

QFT.
Although this system is better in that it also allows people with time but no money to play 'for free', as well as letting people with money but no time to cheat. The company selling items directly allows the cheating, but does not benefit anyone but the cheater.
Furthermore, since the movement of ISK due to GTCs is exclusively in-game, on the whole nothing is added or removed by this method, and in the abstract sense the 'getting something for nothing (ingame)' is offset by somebody else working for nothing (ingame). Again, if items are sold direct from the company they magically come into existence, affecting the economy.
This doesn't mean that ISK buyers don't suck (they do, colossally), it simply means EVE has a better system for handling them. -

What about us who do not have time to play and refuse to cheat I want a game that rewards me for not having enough time to play without having to pay for it. [/sarcasm]
Oh wait, I have already found it

Quoted for posterity. I also agree with this statement. However my experiance with MMO's is limited. I only have two games to compare.

Yeah I never really like the term to be used here. I actually prefer making the difference on a level of purity.
For example. If you play Monopoly you get a set amount of game currency to start. Well lets say someone decides to start playing with 2 extra bills for each denomination for all players. It is still the game, but one has gone beyond normal game play, and made it easier for all involved.
Lets then say you jump into a game of Monopoly where four players have played with the two extra bills per denomination and you decide to be a purist and play with out the extra two bills. You then have a disadvantage, thus the purity of the game has been could be comprimised for you.
One could just as easily call you stupid for not taking advantage of the mechanic.
You could just call them cheaters.
So, yes I pretty much see using out of game means to aquire an advantage is compromising the purity of the game. I do not look down on others and understand why they do it, but I am not willing to compromise on that level for my own game enjoyment. Call it self a imposed initiation to the game.

As much as I like to hate on SOE, I do play Everquest 2 and logged in last night to check this cash shop thing out. This isn't RMT, you can't buy currency or items you'd normally buy with currency. You can buy appearance armour (goes over your normal armour for when you want to look cool without switching to ****ty gear), house pets, little non-combat pets that follow you around and XP gain potions (+10% to +50% xp gained over gour hours). The thing people seem most ****ed off about are the potions, but you already get a bunch of 1-hour versions of them for free as veteran rewards if your account is old enough. So to be honest, it's not that big of a deal.
What IS a big deal is that this is an indicator of a trend. When SOE were developing Everquest 2, they used Everquest 1 as a live test-bed for ideas, items and concepts to help with EQ2's development. Things that they had always maintained would never be put in EQ were implemented in expansion after crappy expansion. The game saw somthing of a mass exodus of players while this was going on and it doesn't seem EQ2 was any better off at launch from the testing. Now it seems they're testing the microtransaction model for their upcoming game Free Realms on EQ and EQ2. It shows they consider the game to be on its last legs and don't care if they ruin it as long as they can possibly help make Free Realms a big success. It's just another example of how MMO companies are all chasing WoW's numbers and consider their games with smaller scale subscriber bases as failures. It's like they don't care what they do to their current subscriber base because they're sure they'll make a killing on Free Realms. It's the exact opposite of what CCP does with promoting its current subscriberbase and growing it organically.
On a separate note, EA just confirmed that SWTOR is not going to be microtransaction supported but based on EA's track record, I don't know whether to trust that statement. Seems their CEO hasn't a clue what's going on in his own company.

I don't mind the occasional GTC sale from another player so get some quick isk but some people just go overboard and buy like 20 GTC's a month... Not kidding here, I know more than one!
That , to me, is cheating and completely ruins the game for all involved. But then again so do other mistakes by CCP like moon mining balance...
