Lo there
The other day my PC decided it was time to go to the great PC World in the sky and thus left me in need of building a new one.
Ordered all the bits I want with the exception of the CPU and mobo as I cannot decide what I want. So then oh wise and wonderful EVE forums, what do people recommend?
Do I want the
Core2Duo E8400 3ghz jobby?
AMD Phenom X4 9950 2.6GHz Black Edition
or some sort of Intel quad core? I don't want to spend more than ú150 on the cpu.
So guys and gals, what to do, what to do?

I'd choose the AMD.
It has a nicer box.

Intel are quite far ahead of AMD in the CPU game, they just make better chips. AMD are soon to release a new chip that might rival Intel's 2007 offerings. Take that as you will.
So yeah, I'd recommend the Intel E8400. Quad cores aren't much use unless you do some fairly specialised stuff, although I think a few select games like SupCom and Crisis Warhead might be optimised for quad core (I'd have to check that one). ____________________

Your video card and motherboard? Are you buying everything brand new or just upgrading and at what resolution do you play?

I use the AMD Cpu you have listed.
I've not seen it stay above 25% for longer then a few seconds (per core)
Running 3 classic clients

I already have a 4850 and the mobo I buy, will most likely be Gigabyte, will depend on the CPU I get. I am favouring the E8400 tbh as I've used a 2ghz core2duo for the last couple of years before the PC died at the weekend. _______________________________________

For CPU, use Intel and for GPU use AMD.

its christmass go for broke
buy a iCore7 920 and a Gigabyte motherboard to go with it with a sprinkling of DDR3 Ram to go on top.
8 cores overclocked to 3.5Ghz will make you happy....

I used to use AMD CPU's. I've recently swapped to Intel's offerings.
Take that as you will. -

Assuming you're going to play at or below 1600x1200 then I suggest the E8400. If you run more than two clients and play EVE a lot then get a Q6600, you won't regret it.
I recommend the P45-DS4 motherboard. I have one here and it's a very good overclocker.

With four or more clients my CPU runs at 90-100% and I never drop below 60 fps. With six clients I drop to a minumum of 50, with the average being around 70.

At stock speeds AMD gets you a better bang for the buck.
If you want to Overclock however, Intel overclocks WAAAAAAY easier and more stable than AMD, so you can buy a cheaper CPU and overclock it to something that would cost 4x its price to buy at stock. Besides, I'm never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down |

i'd say that either one of the cpu's will meet your needs. in this case, intel would kinda give you the horsepower, and amd would give you the torque.. take the amd, just to jump abit from the mainstream, and cause of the shiny box

Still not sure what to get, gonna order it this coming Wednesday, but am leaning towards the AMD 9950 atm. Of course if I win the lotto this weekend then I am getting the top of the range i7 jobby
So far I have ordered, due for delivery Friday morning.....
Coolermaster Centurion 5 case Samsung HD502IJ SpinPoint F1 500GB. Though I am thinking of ordering a 2nd one and have them in a raid 0 config (though I'd love an SSD, but maybe when the prices drop a fair bit) Corsair 4gb DDR2 800mhz. I went for the 800 as the 1066mhz stuff was a price I wasn't willing to pay and tbh my PC that died only had 667mhz DDR2 in it and it was fine.
Just got to decide on which cpu and mobo now.

NO!!!
BAD!!
Don't pay that much for a case. Seriously.
For nearly 1/3 the price you can get something that cools %10 less.
Edit: Oh, it's built in PSU. Just buy a cheaper case and a decent PSU separate.

My case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811103014
Super roomy to put everything you would ever want and still keep the cables decently organized. My case stays at 22-30Celcius according to speedfan. The built-in fans are super quite also, even on high. Only thing that was a PITA was their quick release system for the PCI slot upgrades, I ended up just using screws because it was a lot less hassle.
Oh, and it weighs about 30lb... empty. Very sturdy though. (And very big) Besides, I'm never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down |

I don't know the case so can't comment. Even if I did beauty is in the eye of the beholder so it's entirely up to you in the end anyway. The one thing I would research is that PSU, you don't want it breaking down on you.
