Partly out of boredom at all the moon mining POS drama that's been filing the boards today and partly out of genuine curiosity since I couldn't find much information on the topic.
What does it take to create a truly great PVP corp?
If you were starting a new pirate/merc/empire wardec/whatever corp for example how would you proceed?
Would you take only experienced PVPers? Or would you build your corp around a core of younger players?
Low Sec or Null Sec?
What kind of experience would you want to have as CEO before you tried to form a corp?
Eventually I think I'd like to form my own corp, though I am probably the least qualified CEO in the entirety of EVE due to never having the time to be online and still having a lot to learn about PVP from the players I fly with now. But a little information or discussion would be interesting.
It just seems like there's so few truly great corps out there. I think the average PVP corp is probably a lot better and more closely knit than the average PVE corp, just because PVE tends to be more of a solo activity. But I'm sure there are some exceptions.
What made the great corps so special?
If any CEOs would like to share their expertise of experiences and the lessons they learned when their corp was young it would be way more interesting than hearing the GD crowd emorage over something that's purely rumor at this point. -------------------------------------------------- Signature |

You have to start with an Alpha Dog personality, either yourself or your right hand man. Be strict on recruiting, no tards. No people in it for ISK or for their themselves, you want team players who share in your vision of being the best they can be. People who will train what they need to train and fly what they need to fly. Then add tons more discipline and conditioning. Utmost discipline on coms, attentive, multitasking people with properly setup overviews who watch/use broadcasts while managing targets and their ships.
That's the basics.
It's not for everyone. Some people want to just play the game and be idiots, they don't want to get yelled at or told what to do.
Personally, I like to win.

Definitely definitely definitely follow before you try to lead. If that means trying out a few corps before you find one you're comfortable with, and which has competent leadership and members, so be it. Personally I've been really lucky with the corps I joined, despite a few rough spots with the nullsec entities. But that had to do with my available time to be in-game, not with the quality of the corps themselves.
After you've become established in a corp try to transition yourself into a position where the directors let you take charge of an op, or serve some other central role like chief scout or target designator.
Acquiring members to a one-man corp is, I found, extremely difficult if you don't have any past corp-mates who are looking for a new corp. You'll spend a lot of time in the recruitment channel copy-pasting a recruitment message strategically between the spammed messages of bots. Then you'll have to have some kind of interview with potential members, and you'll find that you'll have to justify yourself to them more than they have to justify themselves to you. Corps that already have a bunch of members justify themselves through their accumulated reputation, but a one-man corp has none of this unless the sole member is some kind of Eve celebrity. It's all a long sucky process that may or may not yield any results even after days of effort. That's just my experience with this, although I also had a very specific design concept for my corp which probably turned people off.

not that I have any experience in leading a corp but the below is based on my observations.
CEO don't need to be good at pvp but should be online quite a lot, be dedicated, friendly, good diplomat. (but that goes for any corp to be great at what ever they do)
for a pvp corp you need good FCs. experienced pilots or new players is not really that important if they are willing to listen and you have a great FC, (the more experienced players you have the worse a FC you can properly survive with)

If you are a good PvPer, and or know some, it is sometimes worth it to train your corp from the ground up.
But it takes forever.
However, you eventually end up with a badass group.
Be patient and gentle with noobs, be harsh (but not mean or angry) with vets. Noobs need to be coddled, to not turn them off of PvP. Vets need to be kept in line, and held to high standards.
Also, while you don't HAVE to be good at pvp to make a great pvp corp, setting an example helps a ton. _

Ya, this. It's pretty simple: Show up, get in a fleet, have a plan, and kill ****. Eventually you get better and better so you don't need to recruit vets. The only hard part is keeping people excited and motivated as people can get bored really easily. --

It's definatly true you as a CEO needs to set an example and preferably, if not necesserily. You'll get no serious takers being one guy from 07 for example.
Secondly, surround yourself with awesome people, make them your corp group and build around that. Your corp will never be better then the sum of it's directors and officers.
And, if you really want to be badass, don't take noobs. Leave them for the nullsec sandbox, they can come were the big boys play when they grow up, and nullsec blob's aint it. (hint: Piracy is for the real men!)
This is what I've done, And The Movement [THEM] I hope is considered an above average fighting force for the last three years. I guess the somewhat new people have no idea who we are in most cases, but thats because we're not self boasting asshats.
Cheers, and good luck.

Ive run malum for over a year now, and im happy with my corp.
It takes some dedicaton, a lot of time, you need to set standards for your recruitment. Be clear on what youre looking for, where you want to go and what you can provide. As for experience: I think the proper mindset is the biggest thing you need.
I made malum after 2 weeks of play and we're still ging strong. I suggest you simply start one and be aware that things will be slow in the beginning. Determination is the key. keep your standards for new recruits, build up a group of people you trust and can rely on blindy and work your way up from there.

Edited by: Elsebeth Rhiannon on 11/12/2008 12:47:36 I have never had the joy of actually leading a full pvp corporation, but for any succesful corporation in the long term you need (some of these were mentioned already):
Vision: a long-term definition of what this corporation is about. "PvP" might be enough, but I would recommend something more specific (mercs with honor? merciless pirates? what?).
A committed CEO and preferably a couple of directors. At least one of these must have personality that others will follow and identify with, at least one needs to have enough ruthlessness to be able to be not-nice to people if the corp's advantage requires, at least one needs to be a good diplomat and someone who likes talking to people and organizing stuff and active fairly much.
Stringent recruitment. How many SP and how much flight time newcomers have does not matter, but you don't take in morons who are not willing to learn, don't take in people whose first question is "what's in it for me?", don't take in people who'd join anyone simply because you are desperate to recruit, don't take in people who do not share the corp vision.
FCs. These don't need to be the same guys as the CEOs and directors, though sometimes they are. (And industrial co-ordinators, if you plan to do any industry.)
Basic security. Calculate your assets, set aside what you absolutely need to survive in case everything else is wiped clean, and then don't give access to that to anyone except the CEO and one or two trusted men. Have separate spending accounts and hangars for the corp in general. Know how the corp role system works and work with it, even though it is a pain, instead of dropping director access on everyone and their cousin.
Continuity. As soon as possible (and this might take a year or two) start setting things up so that nothing relies on any one person, so that if anyone of you (including you) quits, the corp can pick up and go on.
JUST DO IT. If you spend more time talking about what you should do than actually doing it, you are doing it wrong. In the vast majority of cases in EVE, you cannot organize stuff (e.g. pvp) well by having people discuss the organization, you will be much better off by having people (e.g. FCs) just do it, and then make procedure out of what they'd do anyway. Always remember that nothing comes of "we should" talk unless you can name the specific persons who will actually DO it and get them to commit to it.
Hope this helps some.

FYP. Why did I do that?
Once you got the memberbase and structure up and running in your corp, you should be able to fly with your corpies virtually all the time. Managing a stable corp isnt that much work once its up and running (note: ONCE it IS) --

Edited by: Trevedian on 12/12/2008 01:50:16 PLANS + EXECUTION + FUN + SHARING IDEAS = A Great PVP Corp (imo)
Everyone has different styles, adapt your skills to the corps needs. You don't need to be a ***** all the time to have a good corp (Well sometimes you do). I tend to be very laid back, have few rules such as;
1) No podding after ransom has been paid 2) Honor all 1v1's 3) No shooting blues!
Its very important to have a goal for your corp at all times... You need to keep players active and engaged.
Having been in corps of all sizes, personally, I prefer corps of 40 or less. Beyond that, individual players become less recognized, impersonal.
I have mostly been a pirate, and we have always tried to keep it lighthearted... Humiliating enemies, smackin tards (any MMO has plenty), and humour keeps the corp machine functioning.
Learn from each other, share setups, work as a team. Competition is good, but having the biggest E-peen on the killboard isn't the pinnacle of success.
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT: Have a tight crew of cool people that work together well and understand when to be lighthearted and when to be serious. Being selective has its advantages, so if someone isn't working out... Boot them for the good of the corp.
All the things I mentions were mistakes I made personally btw

What you need is: * to invest a lot of time in the game, if you do not have a lot of time to spend in EvE just don't do it, * to be experienced, friendly and relaxed in order to support your members, * to have a good plan for the corp and your corp mates must be able to make that plan their own, so all of you share the same goals and work together, * provide the basics for any corp : good office, forums, voice comms, killboard, * be a good FC and run multiple weekly OPs: the more success the ops have the better your corp will evolve * do not be afraid to spend time with people, recruiting, speaking, sharing your problems with your corp mates.
