hello people, please excuse the noobish question but i am finding it extremely difficult to get an answer to this:
Can a t1 freighter such as a charon be built in an npc high sec station or only in a capital ship construction array in a POS?
i ask this mainly because im not sure whether or not freighters come into the capital ship category (being able to fly in high sec and dock in stations)

They can be built in hi-sec as I understand it. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Freighters and Jump Freighters are not capital ships.
Both can be built in high sec stations. Both can fly around high and low sec and use gates like normal ships. Jump Freighters can jump to cynosural fields in low and 0.0 sec solarsystems. Freighters are built in Large Ship Assembly Arrays. Jump Freighters are built in an Advanced Large ship assembly array. --

The problem with buildign them in a pos is that if you cant fly the ship, it is kinda stuck there until you find soemone who can.

I both agree and disagree with that.... agree for the same reasons you state, but disagree because they both require the same capital component BPO's that all other capital class ships take. JFs also use advanced capital stuff.
So basically i do conceder them capital ships, but thats just me -------------------------------------------

Black Ops use capital ship components too ;)
IMO Capital Ships require the capital ships skill. Also they can't use gates, which limits them to lowsec/0.0. The rest of the ships that use capital ship componentry (orca/freighters/JF/black ops) can be build in highsec.
Only Freighters/JF require you to be able to pilot them to build at a POS. (as they are too big to fit inside another freighter)
