Edited by: FormulaOne on 15/12/2008 22:04:42 Ive never fully understood the whole concord/sentry gun thing in .4-.1 systems
If i take a shot at a target at a gate or station the sentry guns will take aim and start shooting me correct? If the target doesnt return fire he can just slip through the gate so I have to kill him quickly..correct? How long will the sentry guns fire? Is there an exact time limit? Reason I ask is ive heard of "tanking" sentry guns.. My characters drake in question can tank alot.. The shield recharge rate is in the low 100 second region.. I can fly all sorts of goodies just scared of sentry guns shredding my t2 ships
What is the most important thing i need to know about sentry guns?
Edit.. if you warp scram a ship can he still jump through a gate if he doesnt return fire?

If you shoot anyone on a gate or station who isn't flashy red, you will take a sec status hit and get a Global Criminal Flag (red lettering). This will last for 15 minutes. For those 15 minutes, sentry guns will shoot you constantly unless there is someone else with a GCC in their range, in which case they'll cycle.
In addition to your GCC, you'll get aggro to the owner of the sentry guns shooting you (yellow lettering). This means that even if you lose your GCC, sentry guns might still shoot you if you were in sight of them. Always wait an extra couple of minutes after the yellow lettering goes away, it's slightly bugged sometimes and you'll just end up with another timer.
If your target doesn't engage you, they can use the gate or dock. If they do engage you and decide to stop, they have to wait 60 seconds before docking or using the gate. Same goes for you, 1 minute timer for docking/jumping gates after aggression.
Sentries have a range of 150km (from the gate or station) and do around 350dps (if I remember right) split across all damage types. They have perfect tracking, will kill your drones if you get aggro to them and will kill most anything below a cruiser very quickly.

so for instance the Tama system.. Are all the battles going on in asteroid belts and next to planets and not on the gates?

Do you just warp out of the sentry guns 150km range to an asteroid field or safe spot to protect your ship? Im confused on how you kill people with sentry guns trying to kill you If your target doesn't engage you, they can use the gate or dock. If they do engage you and decide to stop, they have to wait 60 seconds before docking or using the gate. Same goes for you, 1 minute timer for docking/jumping gates after aggression.

Im confused..how do you kill someone if the sentry guns are pounding on you? Do you bring a remote repper buddy with you? Does the repper guy get a GCC if they start repping your ship?

You might want to go hang out in C&P for a bit and join a pirate corp.
If you shoot anything in low sec that isn't already blinking you'll get GCC. If you rep anyone who is blinky you get GCC. To gate camp you bring a big ship with a good tank.
Gate camping is not a good idea for a starter pilot unless you have a lot of friends with you. The best option is to scan someone out in a belt/planet and kill them.

Most of the fighting in Tama is either Factional Warfare of pirates ganking Factional Warfare. Essentially, if you're going to choose to attack someone on gate or on station, you need to be able to tank your target's DPS plus the gate guns. The other option is simply to let them engage you, forcing them to take sentry fire (if you're not an outlaw) or to fight without having the sentries shoot you (for an outlaw). This means you need to rely on them for the "consent" to PvP, which can be a problem.
You can bring a logistics pilot with you but that pilot will also get a GCC for repping you if you've got one. On top of that, if you're a full outlaw pirate, your friend will get GCC just for repping you at all, regardless of if you have GCC or not.
Belt piracy and mission busting are what I'd recommend a starter pirate. Pickings in belts can be slim and probing restricts your range (unless you're willing to have a cov-ops account with you) but you don't need to take sentries with either. Protip: after your kill, don't forget you have GCC and try to go to a gate if you can't tank it.

BC's and up are really the only ships that can "tank" sentries. This is done by using an active (or atleast partially active) armor tank. Shield tanks can use either high recharge or be active as well. They only do about 350 dps so this can easily be perma-tanked by a dual repper BS solo. Even a single repper BS with very high resistances (like the abaddon) can tank them indefinately.
BC's (my BC's atleast) can't perma-tank them solo but through a mix of buffer and active armor repair they can survive them long enough to kill another target, loot it and warp off. A pair of BC's makes this far easier.
On a related note, your GCC will go down once you stop shooting a non-criminal. However the sentry guns will have their timer restart every time they shoot at you. So if you wait 10 minutes into your GCC, fly to a gate, get shot at and move on, your GCC will be at 5 minutes still but any sentry guns belonging to the corp of the ones that shot at you will be reset to 15 minutes. I've had times where my GCC went away 45 minutes before and yet I stil have sentry aggro cause I keep having to come into range of the sentries for whatever reason. On the bright side the gate guns typically belong to the faction navy and station guns belong to whatever corp the station does. Hence you might only have aggro from station guns but not gate guns.

You shouldn't just shoot someone sitting on a gate at 0 and expect them to sit there. Try catching them off a gate, you know, like when they jump in.

so does piracy take place mainly in belts and at planets? No sentries correct?

fighting takes place wherever you are. At gates if not with a gatecamp, with a bait ship placed at a tasty 12 km distance or so, just perfect for you to attack. Once that happens others warp to you and kill you. At safespots you can be probed, in belts and at planets you can just be scanned. It really isnt a problem of "where" to be killed in lowsec.

Piracy happens wherever pirates are.
Go to the video section of the forums, download and watch some of the videos of piracy to get an understanding. More than anything, find a pirate corp that trains pirates. The forums will get you good advice and terrible advice, and it's hard to convey the basics let alone the finer points of the trade. Join a corp, and learn there.
Also, honour your ransoms.

Yeah, that's definetly the best thing you can do. Personally I'd reccomend sniggwaffe, I joined about 2 months ago when I was a complete newbie to piracy and have definetly learnt alot on that time. If you're already in Tama like your previous posts indicate, it's also easier for you that way since that's where we usually operate.
