as above, correct me if I am wrong but there is no real advantage of the t2 version over grabbing a basic t1 named (not faction) now, so the expense of the t2 is now just wasted isk?

Cap penalty.
T1 has the standard -25% cap, whereas the T2 has -17% cap.
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |

It's fun on the ships that get the flat MWD penalty bonus, i.e. the Thorax - T1 MWDs have no penalty at Ship Skill V, and better meta level ones give a cap BONUS. ----

Nope, that's an intended mechanic, as told by CCP devs themselves. The bonus would be rather worthless otherwise, no?

For perma-run setups, best named is now actually better than T2. Their speeds and signature penalties are the same, but the higher activation cost on the T2 MWDs usually offsets the lower cap penalty. This basically. Or in other terms: if you just use the MWD to "get there" use T2. If you plan to be orbiting on it, use named.

Not really, the serpentis ships (vindicator) were this way even before the MWD changes, they had a bigger cap bonus on mwd than thorax hulls.
