Sometimes you kill a couple rats then the rest warp/disappear. What causes this?

I have heard in the past that if someone discovers a exploration combat site that this will cause rats to warp off. That being said the last time I had rats warp from combat in a belt I asked in local if anyone hade activated a exploration site and the answer was that someone had done so 15 minutes earlier. At that point I was not sure what/who to believe.

Well the timing is very precise. It seems if you kill any rat that is smaller than the biggest rat in the belt, then kill a big rat, the rest will warp RIGHT AFTER you blow up the others.
But I can't confirm this either. So I'm .. blah. CCP doesn't give away their secrets, so who knows?

It may appear that way, but i always start with the smallest first and rarely have them warp out... To me it seems they're just on a timed rota. You'l notice if you are halfway through killing a spawn when they warp, occasionally you'l find the half that warped in another belt in the same system... They just move around every so often it seems.
Edit: Also, scrambling them doesn't work.

How often does the warp outs happen for you?
Granted I don't have that much ratting experience, but I can only say I've seen them warp/disappear 4-5 times so far.
I just figured it was some random wonky NPC coding and press on with life.

True that, its like asking 'Why do the rats shoot at me' they just do, they move on from time to time, often found in other belts or gone completely. SOMETIMES if your really lucky you can find them flying into the sun at 10,000km/s.

I used to like when a nice spawn would MWD away from you at 1200m/s and eventually end up 1000km from the belt. Never understood the reasoning behind this.

Good god there's a lot of confusion here. It's this simple:
* When you (or anyone else) warps into a belt, a timer is started for the rats. * When timer expires, the rats warp to another belt in the system, regardless of if they are in the middle of combat.
The timer is about as long as the timer for rat respawn in belts (if not the same), so somewhere between 10-15 minutes.
The rats don't dissapear, they warp to another belt or gate in system.

What happens if you were in the belt first and the rats spawned on you, do they still have the timer?

Never mind the warping, what i want to know is why do they always appear in a belt just as you move into warp away from it.

I though you understood. EvE have no AI.
So asking "why npc have random behaviour" is pretty pointless, I guess. Eve have no AI ! Fetchez la vache !

That would require the NPC's to actually HAVE AI code.
ATM CCP is just using a slightly modified NPC script code from Space Invaders Besides, I'm never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down |

I find that if you destroy all the "Support" ships (the frigates or smallest ships of any given spawn) the larger ships warp out more frequently.
To properly cain rats you kill the battle ships and "Mark" a support ship or two by damaging their armour or structure slightly so you can peg that group of support ships as a seed for respawn of the BS next time you run across them.
Have hardly ever had a spawn warp out on me when going after the larger ships first. Have had many spawns warp out on me after taking out the support (Even just one or two)
Hope that helps ; ]

Bullets, Laser's, Nasty enemies with bad reputation on what they do to prisoners and frozen corpses. But most of all do they warp off when they get the call that tell them "Dinner is ready"
