Liberty Prime is fun-ish, but how could he ever beat some of the really well written characters?

I mean, how many giant (patchwork) robots have we seen in videogame history? Big robots aren't exactly creative, they make 'em by the dozen.

No one has mentioned Samus Aran. She's by far my favorite character. A lady single handedly destroying 2planets get my vote. Not to mention the games are some of the best ever...

If you do that, you suddenly have to mention most of the nintendo characters.
Mario & Luigi, Princes *****stool and her little mushroom servants, Link, Donkey Kong, they all wrote history.
I really like the metroid series, but I'm not sure how I feel about how they recycle their own levels by making you visit them 3 times over. But the puzzles can be nice... sometimes...
So, while were at it... in the big picture, and looking at videogame history, one of the most important characters is probably Donkey Kong. I think in the time of the original coin-op arcade game, Donkey Kong was better known and more popular than the poor guy who jumped over the barrels.
That poor guy was mario, btw, for you youngens out there
edit: FFS we didnt even mention PACMAN yet!
edit2: OMG what about the ninjas from shinobi? What about Sonic? Dr. Robotnik?

For anyone who ever played the first 3 on the original NES way back in the day, you know what I'm talkin about.
The dog on duck hunt gets honorable mention too. It takes balls to laugh at someone holding a red plastic gun pointed at your face.

Gordon Freeman is quite well known and kind of cool. I also like many of the KOTOR series chars. Usagi Yojimbo FTW+++ Jaheira and Minsc from Baldur's Gate I liked very much.

Although Jan, Minsk and Edwin ("What is this mouse magic that makes me do your bidding?") rank among my favorite NPCs of all time. Although as far as characters go Planescape: Torment takes the cake (Nameless One, voiced by Michael T.Weiss. Morte. Dak'kon. Fall-fron-Grace. Ignus). Jon Irenicus ranks highly as well (but how can he NOT rank highly when he's voiced by David Warner?).
