I've been pirating for a while and money's tight. PvP is expensive sometimes.
So, I made an alt with the intent to mine some of this veldspar that Chribba seems to love so much (and with the prices on low-ends, who wouldn't like a piece of the pie, eh? Especially since I can simply semi-afk mine while I'm doing other things). Not that mining is in any way shape or form considered fun (except by some demented beings), but while I'm studying it's a nice way to pad the wallet.
After remembering the dreaded learning time line to be able to learn (what's up with that, anyway?) I decided to jump on the rookie corp channel and ask for help (i.e. money) though I was mostly fooling around. Then it struck me, I would pretend I was a newb and just started (to see what would happen).
I began by asking simply for money because mining was slow. *BLIP* My wallet flashes, and I look to see that one guy had given me 1M and another 12,345.67. A convo invite from a third person popped up and it was a pilot asking why I needed money so bad. I explained to him that I was just starting (not really a lie), and that the rank 3 learning books were extremely expensive for a new player. 20 minutes later, I am the proud owner of a kestrel, merlin and skillbooks totaling roughly 15M.
Before he leaves, my benefactor instructs me to look him or his main up in the future, and lo and behold---- *BLIP*, my wallet flashes again... 25M player donation. My jaw dropped on that one.
tl;dr version/summarization:
After a 40 minute investment of time, my new miner is 50M isk richer. All I had to do was be friendly (not a thing was asked for). So is this a scam that's been done to death, or have I found a new past time for when I have an hour or less to kill?

That is not a scam, its a scam if you promise something back for the isk they give, and then not do what you promised. This is just kindness of ppl.

I disagree. Merriam-Webster defines a scam as: a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation.
But breaking it down, that's 75M an hour. Not a bad deal with a new character. But what can you make on your own?

Sure as hell isn't 75M. What do you make? And if it's more, can I have your stuff?

I remember losing one of my first Omens to a guy from Frater Mortalis Armada. They'd 'decced us because we had a smacky member and after a good chat and advice he had paid for my loss and a lot more. I never really asked for the isk, but if polite and genuinely new a lot of people will help out. Where do ideas like these come from? Monkeys in hats? |

Like you said yourself, you just stated to him that the character is new and the skillbooks cost a little too much. None of that was a lie, once again, as you yourself stated.
There are kind people in this game who will help new players, and if you happen to be an older player who takes advantage of that, you are not scamming the person who gives the ISK away simply because they would have given them away anyways.
Phail attempt at being a "bad person" tbh. Go mine some veldspar. *-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^ By the way, I am an Ishtar and T2 sentries fan. Fight to make the sentry damage rig work for all drones. |

I do the same, if I like the guys in the help channel. I see it as an investment. And yes, I have been contacted weeks later by some of them. Makes good recruits.

I wasn't intent on being bad, just getting money. It was frankly boring (except when I saw the 25M deposited ) Just wondering if this is a common thing, tbh.
If the pool is full, I would rather look for another. |

This is no surprise.. It's always been easier to make money through cooperation and being friendly then through piracy. These people who gave you these gifts could easily afford it because they already have learned the secret, that friendly play earns better. You may find that your lowly alt progresses throught the game easier than your vet pvp pilot.

Just to let you know, I've been given far more money and received far more assistance from people who have killed me in PVP. Especially when new, older players will often give you some isk just for having the balls to attack them when you're a young char. Pirates are usually pretty mature and decent people. They just like to farm other players rather than rats.
Never been given jack in high sec. Though my alt gives away goodies from time to time. It's all about keeping the new players interested and thriving. -------------------------------------------------- Signature |
