For those who come online for a little peace and quiet, teamspeak can be a real pain. My recent experience of it showed the following:
(1) Some people have avatars that look Heroic, but in real life they sound like squeaky rodents,
(2) Some people like the sound of their own voices even though (1),
(3) Most of the chat is pointless *******s (we've got xxx dueberry in the whatsit, whoohoooo!),
(4) It blurrs fantasy RPG with real life, (its ok if you are online with your RL mates, but really, if I wouldn't hang around with you in real life, what makes you think I want to spend all evening on the freeking phone to you?),
(5) Its pointless, unless you can talk faster than you can type,
(6) Most of the people who like it probably have RL jobs in call centers,
(7) I get a sore head from wearing the headset.
Lots of love,

Since im a pvp player and a team player ther is just no way we could do what we do with out teamspeak.
I do agree in one of your points, the RP part. My best RP sessions iv had in this game became useless after we ended up at same ts in a war once. We became friends and after that we only spoke on ts.
But at the same time when i started to play this game with ts the fun factor became greater

TS is the bomb.
Nothing funnier than drunken pvp experiences on TS.
I play the game for times like that.

I'm guessing TS must be a particular problem for people with female avatars when in real life they are 6ft 5" Yorkshiremen with beards like Rhodedendron bushes.

Lustralis, I guessing you dont like it.
Here are some guidelines for those that dont:
1. Keep mouth shut. 2. Remove headset from head. 3. Apply fingers to keyboard.
As to your original post, here is a reply on why I dislike some forum posts.
1. Some people have avatars that look quite sensible and then they hit the keyboard.
2. Despite the fact they have nothing original to say they keep saying it (see 1)
3. A lot of what they write is pointless (I hate TS because, whoohoooo!)
4. It fails to blur fantasy with real life (what makes you think we want to spend all night communicating by typing).
5. Typing is pointless unless you can type and the recepient can read faster than one person can talk.
6. Most people that like typing must be typists.
7. You can get sore fingers and RSI from typing.
Lots of sarcasm

TS is cool and the inane chatter on TS during boring moments of Eve (trust me, there are lots) help pass the time.
It's easy enough to avoid being annoyed on TS by muting someone - there was one person on EV's TS who I regularly had to mute because he was SO annoying.

well personally I don't go for that sorta thing very well... its just... weird.
on the other hand I have enjoyed going to LAN partys greatly. Theres just something weird about staying up all night playing computer games, sharing **** and files, and watching movies.
then the A/c goes out. :die:
erm... back on the subject...
uhh, on #5... I think most people CAN talk faster than they type, some people, even who play games like this, apparently, can't touch type, and some who can functionally do so, have not gotten to the point of flowing with their typing enough so they can type at, or sometimes even faster than their talking speed. for those with speech impediments, or even without, but who are self concious of their speech, they are more prone to learning to type THAT fast.
I played Tribes 2 once or twice while there was someone actively in game being an announcer sort. some people just are very talky...
theres also a certain degree of a thing that happens at LAN partys where you at first get a bit of a mind screw at hearing your screen name/alias/character name spoken outloud, like your "offline" name. if you haven't ever been orally referred to by your game name, go to a lan party a few times and make friends there. its weird when someone knows you IN PERSON and refers to you IN PERSON, orally, by your online name.
(and btw, this is not the same name I was using at the time, it was a one word type name... so it didn't "sound" like the name someone could maybe theoretically *really* have.)
though honestly both on one way voice chat, and situations where someone I'm talking to is on a voice, and I'm only typing... its weird. even with the "say something with your fingers instead of your mouth" habit when you learn to type REALLY fast, you still have an urge to talk verbally.

Voice comm (TS/Ventrilo etc) is invaluable, not only is a instrumental tool in combat, it's also a perfect opportunity to get to know your in-game "brothers" better. And as someone said, on those weekends when you rather stay home and take a few cold ones and chat with the alliance mates looking for a fight, you can have few good laughs :)

Edited by: Frankinator on 18/07/2004 12:02:25 Ur first three points are just ur problem imho, depends on who u play with.
4) Why does it take the RPG thing away from it, ever seen fleetcommander or spacepilots have little keyboards instead of voicecomms? The only difference is that not everybody sounds like Jean Luc Picard.
5) No it's not pointless, because now I actually get to steer my ship, keep an eye on the battlefield and turn on my modules all while talking to the people who I'm flying with.
6) I don't know one guy who works in a callcenter and uses teamspeak but whatever.
7) Then buy one that goes behind ur head.
Also it's undoable if ur into PVP alot can't really see how it could be done without it. Type in the gangwindow maybe?
'Ok guys we are now here, see those 8 ships ahead of us? They are the enemy, now start locking (insert name here) and then I want the targetjammers to jam...**** i'm dead'

I find the funniest part is that a friend of mine in a different game we play, uses TeamSpeak over his speakers and doesn't use headsets. And he continually forgets to log off TeamSpeak and leaves his speakers unmuted.
The rest of have tons of fun with that No matter what we pipe through his speakers at odd hours of the day, he still continues to forget to log off or mute his speakers.

Me thinks Lustralis was bored and decided to get a flame and or hot topic going. Teamspeak is a requirement PERIOD for our corporation. 0.0 operations, PVP combat and command and control via keyboard? pullllease. -nuff said.

Lol Casey you are right. I was bored.
But even so, my experience of TS (went on once the other day) did make me think it was a bit strange. Or perhaps the people I was on with were, I dunno.......
