They help... ALOT, but no I don't think you strictly need them. <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

Training those skills up can save you hours of probing... if you want to do a lot of exploration then you should defiantly train them up.

Also you'll want to get Astrometrics V and Covert Ops V. They really make a difference over level IV of each.

Astrometrics V does jack **** except allow you to use the 999 AU probes and the best moon surveying probes.

Astrometric triangulation makes your probes hit more often. So you can substitute patience for having this skill and just scan more. However eventually you'll realize that you're actually wasting more time scanning than it'd take to train this skill up.
Astrometric pinpointing reduces the deviation of the probe hit (the distance from the anomaly that your hit appears at.) The problem with having this at 0 is that for hard to find sites you will narrow the hit down to 1000km or so and then never get any closer. It's still sort of possible to triangulate by hand, I guess, but really you need this at 2, probably 3.
However the discussion is somewhat academic because it's pretty quick to train them both to 3 and they're cheap skills so there's not really any point to not training them.

Oh yeah I meant Signal Acquisition.

For ship probing, it's a matter of must though. Not being able to use DSO / Ferrets is a hamper.
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |

You don't NEED anything, but Signal acquisition, astrometric triangulation and astrometric pinpointing are very useful to have. Being able to fly covert ops is also recommended due to their bonuses. -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |

If you seriously intend to do something useful with exploration, absolutely. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.
