I'm looking to get into ninja salvaging but for now I am running level 1 and 2 missions with a friend. What would be a good dedicated salvage ship (Caldari)?
I'm thinking destroyer with 4 x salvagers and the rest tractor beams.
Thoughts? Thanks.

Yes, that's pretty good. I like the Thrasher. If your skills are good, you can fit a cruiser sized (10mn) afterburner for very high speed (but poor maneuverability) and two cargo expanders to carry over 600m3 of cargo.
For ninja salvaging, though, I prefer a vigil, which is the fastest T1 frigate, has 3 high slots, can target at range, and can fit a decent buffer shield tank. Almost as good, but cheaper, are the Executioner and Atron. Both have two high slots and you can put a small capacitor battery in a mid-slot to keep the salvagers running. These frigates have small cargo bays so you can't steal much loot, but salvage parts themselves are 0.01m3 so you can carry plenty of those.
Look into joining Suddenly Ninjas if you are interested.

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 18/12/2008 20:11:56 The destroyer is the defacto salvager at this point. Fit with an MWD if you are in salvaqe field that is not deadspaced, just remember that if you end up in a deadspace the MWD will not work If you are going to ninja salvage you may want to hook up with a dedicated scanner so you can double your output. Check out Suddenly Ninja/ TEARS Alliance to see if you want to get some ingame help.
EDIT: Joe above is your man.

Hi thanks for the comments. Yes I will be looking you guys up when I finally get some time to hang out online.
Can you recommend any Caldari ships? Those are the only ones I can fly ATM. I'm fairly new. Thanks.

I don't fly Caldari but the Cormorant is a decent destroyer and the Condor or any frigate is acceptable for ninja salvaging. The thing about caldari is that they have neither the speed nor the strong capacitor that you want for salvaging.
If you train Minmatar Frigate to level 3, which takes less than a day, you'll have access to the best frigates in the game, as well as access to the Thrasher. Your skill level in Destroyers will allow you to fly the Thrasher just as well as you fly the Cormorant with no further investment.

Training another races frig takes a matter of hours, and there is no reason to restrict yourself to caldari. If you MUST go with caldari, look for the fastest frig with at least 3 highslots. <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

Thanks I just realized the destroyer skill isn't race specific

Best salvage ship? If cost is not an issue, it's hard to beat a salvaging Marauder
-7 highs (I use 4 tractors and 3 salvagers -40km tractor beam range + double tractoring speed -can have enough cargo room for any L4 mission (4000+ m3) -can be tough enough to warp in and contribute to the fight with 5 T2 meds
If cost is an issue, an interdictor is a great salvage ship. Basically it's a T2 destroyer, but faster.

Ninja salvaging is salvaging the wrecks left behind by someone else's kills. Hunt down mission runners with probes, enter their mission space and salvage the wrecks they've left behind.

I prefer the Catalyst myself, with it's extra low slot for a cargo extender thingie. Makes a big difference between having to warp for offloading or not during salvaging a L4 mission. Also use an AB, not an MWD. MWD won't work in deadspace (except in FW). If your cap skills are low, a trasher might be better as the extra mid slot will allow you to fit another cap recharger allowing you to use all those highslots better.
Of course, this is for salvaging your own missions. If you ninja salvage you can't use tractor beams so you can use a frig instead of a destroyer.

I don't know anything about Ninja Salvaging, but I run an Osprey with 2 Salvagers and two Tractor beams, a 10 MN MWD, a T2 AB, T2 Cap Recharger, and 3 T2 Expanded Cargoholds, giving me about 1000m3 cargo space. I also bookmark all wreck locations, turn in the mission, and then return to salvage because that removes the whole anti-MWD, deadspace factor. I also have 3 Salvage Tackle I rigs on it.
I've thought about outfitting a Rokh to salvage, but the more I think about it, the more cost prohibitive it becomes.

My personal prefered salvager ship had to be the hurricane,it can hold 2000+ m3, can have a AB/MWD fit in the mids to be ready for anything and 8 highs to fit your favorite combo of tractor/salvager.

The best high lvl salvager would be a hurricane.
2041m3 Cargo 330ms with a techII afterburner.
And can still fit an ok shield tank so that you wont have to warp out evry time a new spawn drops in.

Depends on the application...
Lv1-3 missions: Destroyer Lv 4 missions: Battlecruiser (more cargo space) FW plexes: Cloaky destroyer Ninja salvaging: Vigil (you can't tractor the wrecks so speed is paramount) ... besides, I've said all I'm going to say. You're reading my sig now! Bwa!

Drop the tractor beams if your intent is to ninja salvage. They're ok if you're with a friend in the current mission, but utterly useless when ninja salvaging someone elses wreck site.
On my destroyer, I've fitted 4 salvagers, a couple of cap batteries, and either a micro warp drive or an afterburner. I can't use a tractor beam on wrecks I don't own, so I make my ship faster.
I've also tried fitting a fast Kestrel for speed and salvaging, but so far the destroyer seems better suited. ______________ Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. |

Personally, an Assault Frig (Vengeance) with 4x Salvagers, a T2 AB (800m/s), and enough lows to give you a large cargo cap. If youre in hostile territory, you can plate it up for a tougher nut to crack.

Ok my only problem is now I don't have near the CPU or grid to run all that stuff on a Thrasher. I guess destroyer skill will help with that?

Arguably true, but the skill requirements for Marauders (to say nothing of cost) kinda puts them out of reach of your average noob. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

No.
Ship skills don't help with anything by default. How they boost your ship depends on the ship. Show info on the ship and it will tell you what the Destroyer skill boosts.
As far as more CPU/Grid-Train up fitting skills. Engineering and Electronics boost your PG and CPU respectively. Weapon Upgrades and Advanced Weapon Upgrades reduce the CPU/PG need of weapons (Although that wont help you specifically with a salvage ship, you will want to train them up)
There are also fitting mods (Reactor control units and co-processors) that ift in the low slots.
also, I wouldn't use a Vigil to ninjasalvage. It's not as agile as the slasher and is only marginally faster.

No, in fact as far as salvaging is concerned Destroyers I is just as good as Destroyers V, because that skill doesn't affect your speed or cargo room or any other factor relevant to salvaging.
The following just barely fits with Engineering IV and Electronics IV. Those should be high-priority skills for anyone, even a newbie.

First I would like to comment that a salvage destroer is bad for ninja salvage since for some stupid reason you can't tractor cans or wrecks that don't belong to you (aparently ownership has a strong effect on graviton beams).
For ninja salvage you need a ship that can frist probe down your target and then can scoop up the wrecks. I have done this in a heron before, but as long as you can fit a scan prope launcher and salvagers, you should be fine. Frigates are the best because they are fast enough to get in and get out. -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |
