Now I've heard many a horror story from people about the BT engineers making a right balls of installations of BT Broadband so I've gone and ordered it and without any foresight or care I refused their kind offer of ú45 to get some ug to install the thing.
I know my way around a screwdriver and can just about fit a spot of memory without the whole thing exploding in my face so what 'hazards' am I to watch for? A basic step-by-step would be perfect if someone's really bored.

It's pretty straightforward by all accounts. There should be a manual or something? ____________________

Most installs just mean plugging in the router and using it. They've finally realised that not everyone is a technical wizard and most home routers will auto-download the setup info and set themselves up with pw/username and basic settings now.
However, my previous experience of BT broadband have been a mixed bag. the first time was brilliant but the second time was a total disaster with speeds that would be rivalled by a 14.4 dial up modem.
On the second occasion, it took BT a month to finally realise there was something wrong after calls almost every day from me to sort it out. After being told it would take another month to sort it, but I was still expected to pay the full price, I told them what to do with the account and went to Pipex instead. BT insisted that the problems were because I was over 7 miles from the exchange even though I could easily throw a stone through the window of it from my front room. The engineer had to verify that I was calling from my landline when I stood there telling him exactly what he was doing in the yard of the exchange Amazingly, after that incident, BT admitted there was a problem. Maybe it was because they realised their >7 mile range BS wasn't going to work.

BTB was fine for me when I used it. Only thing is they kept me on 512k even after my exchange got upgraded and I could be on 2MB...
Otherwise a very reliable, if expensive service.

Edited by: Wired on 19/12/2008 19:39:21 Installing BT broadband is no problem, you only need to plug in 3 things and here they are.
1 - Plug router/homehub power supply into wall 2 - Plug Router/Homehub phone line thingy into phone socket 3 - Plug computer into router/Homehub
If you are connecting using wireless or using the USB connection on the homehub then things are a bit different (you'll need to install the USB drivers from the cd (browse for them), do NOT install all the BT crap from the cd)
And if you are using the homehub then everything is colour coded.
The only problem i had was something to do with my master socket not being set, but thats because my house was brand new when i bought it so this needed to be set, but it took about 10mins from the nice BT man. And i've had an 8Mb connection since.
If you've also gone for the BT vision thing i can tell you how to set that up aswell =============================================
My sig got edited, and all i got was a lousy e-mail |

One thing I would recommend looking into, BT or otherwise, is making sure the 'bell' wire is properly terminated. It can drag your connection speed down significantly. I won't even begin to try to explain why here though.
You want to make sure you have a master socket something like a:
NTE5 with Bell wire filter such as: this
Was recently on the register here
and there's a brief commentary in this old thread near the bottom.
Quote: The bell wire dates back to days when phones had a dial and a real bell, it is also known as the anti-tinkel wire when then was more than one phone the bell in the other phone would 'tinkle' in sympathy with the dialled number the third wire prevented this. Most phones not supplied by BT have the 'bell' ring circuit built in and only require two wires to operate on BT supplied phones without the third wire they would not ring on an incoming call would still be able to make calls (and accept them if you 'picked' up the phone when it was ringing). For ADSL this wire is NOT used the ADSL filters only use the A and B wires the bell ring wire is 'created' within the filter for phones that require it. On a normal phone line the Master socket creates the bell wire (are only two wires to the exchange) which is then linked into each extension socket An ADSL filter appears to a phone to be a master socket. The reason it can cause problems most noticable when the phone rings is because it carries the AC content on the phone line ( mainly the ring voltage ) which upsets the ballanced phone line and also 'absorbs' some of the higher frequency signals ( the faster the connection the higher the frequencys used and the more noticable the effects are).
~~~~ There is no parody in this thread. Honest. |
