Drone plexes have always sucked, and sucked a lot. It's basically ratting with the rats in one place. There's no chance of a big payoff. There's no officer drones. The loot the sentients drop is components to make drones that are so rare and underpowered that nobody really wants them. I'd really rather have a big pile of plushies.

True, but that would be a complaint about all drone complexes(that you have my support on), while the OP is complaining about 1 that he ran 1 time. Complaining about a single exploration site that you ran is about as silly as complaining about running 1 invention job and having it fail.

whatever happened to doing exploration/plexes just for the challenge and diversity from mission running?! its not all about the isk. not that the best highsec plexes are realy worth that much isk to do.
btw i did a drone plex in 0.4, final room was a hive mothership thing, took ages to kill as it had shield regen twice as fast as a max skilled drake! dropped a 15th tier overseers box, worthwhile and fun.
you wont get rich quick in exploration unless you're in 0.0 (ok, not that quick, but far better loot drop chances), so just enjoy the experience instead.

Some people are forced to PVE in order to fund activities in the game that are actually 'challenging'.

That's in my opinion the only drone-plex worthy of doing in lowsec as you get overseer drops. I think you get all from 9th to 15th(alltogether 73Mio) and like 20Mio from Minerals. There is another small plex, which has the chance of a small faction drop, but rest is crap. I even tried drone escalation which led to drone/gurista-plexes. Was "fun" to kill one jamming ship per 5min :D
Edit: The plex with the hive mother is 5/10 DED.
