I'm part of the gallente and have specialized in being an executive commander, so exactly what would be the best ways to make money early on for this specialization? mining, manufacturing? I eventually want to be able to create a corporation or pilot one of the many command/mother ships late in the game.

Because of the ability to train whatever you darn well want, any character can do anything.
So, try stuff out. Run missions. Train salvaging. Try your hand at trading or manufacturing (*). Try hauling. See what you enjoy doing, because for almost everything in this game, it isnt the skillz of the toon, it's the skills of the player behind the toon.
Finally, I would strongly advise you to look at successful corps in EvE and see what they do well before forming your own. Life is vicious for a corp that is big enough to be a target, but too small to defend themselves.
(*) If you make more selling the minerals than the item, sell the minerals.

The best way to make money is which ever way you enjoy. Mining, missions and trading are all easy options. I would rate them in that order for "easiness", but the reverse order for "profitable".
Mining takes very little knowledge of the game. Doesn't require alot of skill points. But then it doesn't earn that much, and has very little entertainment value.
Missions, atleast Combat Missions, require a bit more knowledge about the game. It also requires more skill points to excel at the higher level missions. Entertainment value is decent at the beginning, but it becomes repetitious pretty quick too.
Trading effectively requires a wide understanding of the game. However, it can be done with very limited skill points. As for entertainment, that really depends on you: some people joy looking for and making deals, others find it too much like "work".
Manufacturing is best viewed as an extention of Trading. If you can't trade effectively to buy your matterials and sell your products, then you are unlikely to turn a profit there. It is far to simple to build stuff for there to be any profit in simply turing mineral in to modules. The real money is made on the trades at each end of the process.
As for your long term goals:
Creating an effective corp is mostly about real leadership and knowledge rather than any in-game skill points. I would encourage you to try spending some time in established corps so that you get a feel for what works and what doesn't before attempting to start your own.
As a caution, bigger is not always better when it comes to ships in Eve. However, if you want to fly command or capital ships then go for it. However, your choice in starting career is irrelevant to this goal. The amount of skill points required to be effective in those ships is so great, that the skill points you start with are insignificant by comparision. It is still a worthy goal if you want to persue it, just don't focus on it so much that you neglect more immeadiate goals.

1. There are NO CLASSES in this game. Everybody can train anything if they want to. 2. Race and school only affect your possible attributes (skill learning speed) and starter skills (which are something like 2 weeks worth of training later on, if even that much). 3. Read this guide

Just curious, but did you buy this character? I looked at the history and noticed it was created back in June of 2007 with at least 6 months of active time. I would think after that long you would have figured something out. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Just as Akita said.
There are no classes in EvE. You may pick different starting paths, but it's only relevance is giving bonuses towards that profession. For example, someone who starts off as a miner gets lots of skill bonuses towards that kind of work. That miner can always change his mind and start training up PvP skills. And eventually, given enough time, you can be skilled in ALL professions. ______________ Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn. |

Nope, did the trial way back when in 2007, and didn't subscribe after the trial until a year later. Then I took a another long break from Eve for a few months before coming back to it just yesterday.

Onemic, If you want to rule the Universe someday, that's fine. But meanwhile--and speaking as someone who's been here a whole week--I'd suggest you focus on more practical matters. All good advice above, although I don't know about salvage. And I can confirm advice I got from others:
1. You will be killed. Repeatedly. Plan on it. Insure your ship, plan on loosing it sooner rather than later, and hope you get lucky and smart. Never take anything into space you're not prepared to loose. Upgrade your clone as necessary.
2. Assuming you're not insane or a sociopath, join a corp. Then assume everyone who's not in your corp is insane or a sociopath. You'll almost certainly make a lot more money a lot faster than going it alone.

Social engineering. Form a corporation, convince people it's going to be awesome, be sure to set a fairly high tax rate, and let them fill up the corporate wallet for you!

lol, this is exactly what I did. I got near-maxed mining skills, about six months ago I got tired of it and started training to shoot people. Actually pretty decent AF pilot now, working toward HACs. ... besides, I've said all I'm going to say. You're reading my sig now! Bwa!

Well I've decided to mostly focus on manufacturing/trading(trading for the profit and manufacturing mainly in order to back up pvping and solo play that I'll be doing down the line) in terms of making money and of course dabble in pvp when I feel I have enough skills and money for the job.
For manufacturing, do you need to level both science and industry? And is it possible to create blueprint originals instead of having to buy them? I've been trying to read up on engineering, but the tutorial in-game doesn't really do a good job of explaining it to the new player. Is there a comprehensive guide or something that would be of great use to people wanting to go into manufacturing?
