I was having fun in a complex in Garisas, pretty intense combat. BLAM! My Toshiba Sat P100 literally blows up. Fan shrapnel and smoke, damn near shat myself. I hop on an old desktop, salvage my lost Nighthawk's stuff, but yah... still down the 3k laptop. On the off chance the cause your computer to explode bug is one recognized by CCP, I sent a petition. Laptop is going to the shop tommarow morning [1 AM right now, and amidst a blizzard no less]. I am left without my primary source of entertainment for the holiday break... small odds I'll have the laptop back for classes in 2 weeks too. If anyone feels any pity, feel free to send me some pittance for when I get back. I had all my isk invested in that shiny new ship, was having alot of fun with it too. I really wasn't expecting the computer to explode, just, damn.

Well, the first thing I did was go WTF, WTF, followed by about 3 minutes of obscenities. Since finals ended, been playing EVE for like, 5-6 hours a day.
I am gonna go check and see the kill mail, didnt even think of that... I blame the 1 AMedness
EDIT: No kill mail, just the insurance mail.
**** While going from the start menu to play, I noticed from the EVE start folder that there is an option to play EVE in <Safe Mode> I damn near ****ed myself laughing... then almost starting sobbing again.

Sad to say, you won't get much relief from CCP - as anyone who knows computers AT ALL knows, it's impossible for standard software too cause a catastropic failure, which is what you experienced.
From what you describe, I'd anticipate a cap or two in your power inverter board blew out. NOT the one in your LCD display, the main inverter in the bottom case.
When I still worked as a technician, we had a similar issue with a Laserjet IIp power supply once - a cap blew out, sending shrapnel three feet into a cinderblock wall - where it embedded itself a inch deep. HP engineers were quite impressed when we sent them the power supply back - it was a service part just received from the depot.
The tech working on it quit two months later - that shrapnel had passed within a inch of his head.

Sweet Jesus. I am now going to have nightmares about how the damn thing was sitting on my lap, only seperated by a cooling pad and a laptop cushion. 2 thin layers of plastic and some bead filled cushions away from my being removed from the gene pool.

EVE loads the graphics card very heavily. Laptops typically have difficulty with proper cooling. So basically laptop was faulty and EVE was stressing it for a long time. I bet it's his GPU fan that exploded

Be thankful that it wasnt a CRT that blew up from EVE. Friend of mine ended up having a 1inch peice of glass stuck in his cheek, barely missing an eye and one of the main arteries. Temporarily blinded from the shock and smoke too.
Now he gets nervous when he goes around the older TV and PC retail shops around here. Cant blame him tbh.
Also, LCD user now, and no more EVE, he says. -

Most computer cmanufacturers have procedures on how to handle potential security hazards with their products (just look at the rate of which Dell, HP, and Apple are replacing their laptop batteries for free ).
You should contact Toshiba as soon as possible, and explain what happened. I'm quite sure they would find your story interesting.

on a more serious note, the eve client did used to be able to hurt computers with it's strange thermal cycling (completely maxing out the cpu and gpu, then not, then doing it again, etc, etc), is this flaw back?? I thought trinity got rid that of madness.

Sorry about your laptop man - sux.
EVE did not destroy your laptop though.
Going by the information you gave (exploding fan, blizzard) - either the fan was faulty to begin with - or there was a lightning strike - you got a power surge and your laptop didn't survive the extra power. --- Save the forum: Think before you post. ISK BUYER = LOSER EVE TV- Bring it back!

Yea, if it actually exploded then it is more then likely to be the battery. If other parts of the laptop fail they are unlikely to explode really, even when heated up alot, melted connections and parts yes, explode, no.

SWEEET.
There is nothing so frustrating as when electronics die in a non-spectacular way. With the complexity of circuitry and whatnot, too often things just stop working. Or become frustratingly unreliable with non demonstrable problems. This is only the second time in some 25 years where I have had the satisfaction of knowing something to be right and truly broken. I had a CRT monitor make a sound like thundercrack, sizzle, then a small plume of smoke... almost poetic. That monitor, done broke.
Toshiba is sending my shipping materials and the tec on the other end of the phone swore their process time is 5 days no matter what, not including shipping. I also had the pleasure of learning that the memory that was 750 dollars when the laptop was purchased is now going for 57 dollars. So 2 512s will become 2 2gigs. 1->4 gigs of memory should be a welcome boost to gaming.
I will be back! And this time... my dire poverty may actually get me into a corp. Kicking and screaming, then surely bemoaning the ignorance of my previous hermitude.
