I have just returned and I'm trying to get a handle on what is happening in the game now as well as what sorts of pilots are needed in general? Is there a specific set of skills needed more than any other or a general shortage of anything? What Ships and Ship skills would make you the most desirable to a team?

Mindlink using CS pilots actually appear to be pretty few and far between, or at least people willing to fly them.

Eve is not WoW. Numbers are not capped, bring a ship and you'll be welcome.

Some general pointers.

This, in essence. You can also train for several different ships, and whatever sort of roles are wanted in a given fleet tend to change from time to time. Certain fleets can also have a predefined composition where there are some basic things you need to be able to do to join up (eg., you might need a reasonably fast ship). Those demands also tend to differ alot from corp to corp (alliance) and fleet to fleet.
Quote: Mindlink using CS pilots actually appear to be pretty few and far between, or at least people willing to fly them.
The reason for this is quite simply that there are so many skills you need to train that are "out of progression" for anything else. Personally i like that though, it is a very specialized role and to enjoy flying it requires a certain mindset. Group bonuses always apply up, and it's really a role you don't want everyone to go for (unless you have the luxury of having enough skill points to do anything you want).
Quote: ECM (Kitsune, Blackbird, Rook, Falcon, Scorpion) Logistics (Basilisk, Scimitar, Guardian, Oneiros)
Flavour will always be flavour. There is nothing wrong in flying those ships, but it should also be noted that these ships also fill pretty specialized roles. Ships in very specific roles are also generally more susceptible to flavour and trends, and just like the CS require a certain mindset to fly alot. I know plenty of ECM pilots for example (well, i am one of those myself) who simply do not enjoy the dynamics of ECM anymore, regardless of whatever percieved strength they have at the moment.
If you are the kind of player who really enjoy refining and honing your skills at one task - becomming very good at your job, then these may be a good choice for you. I think it needs to be said though, ECM is a typical thing people complain about now and throw around from thread to thread - yet not everyone makes a good ECM pilot, enjoy the tricks of the trade - or the perks and punts that come with it.

This tbf, a properly fit tackler. So many people run about with 'combat' set ups. I understand people want to have fun, but youd moan if i turned up to a fight in a Hurricane fitted with Miner II's..

Or a properly fit Scout, Sniper, Support (Light, Heavy?) or...
A specialized recon-gang fit for either intelligence, ambush or search-and-destroy...
... and the list goes on .
If you wish to keep things simple (i could see my last post slowly turning out into just fancy words with few concrete examples to relate to). Somewhere down the line people need to understand that most of these things are part of policy, philosophy, organisation or lack thereof - and it differs wildly even among the best alliances in the game.
Covops as a ship for rookie scouts? or just something for Fleet commanders and alts?
I've seen alliances that hate Battlecruisers and alliances that love them. I have seen alliances that say, "you are either a Sniper BS or support - and support means you fly an Interceptor because we use Interceptors for everything from to scouting to tackle, anti-support and whatever we please with" and i have seen alliances that can outline each and every hull in the game and find a purpose for them, and then use that purpose when they organize fleets.
You'd probably do better by asking within your corp or among your friends - what they prefer you in, if you aim to be a teamplayer. If you aim to join a corp or alliance, looking at what they prefer is usually a good move too. Not trying to be mean, sarcastic or point out obvious things here.

Enlighten me. How is it that they rock? In their current state, Stealth Bombers can't lay down sufficient support DPS (compared to their low hp), and they cannot be strike vessels meant to take out ships in a sniper role.
So...what exactly do they rock at? Taking out stationary mining barges?
Balance is important, but you will always adapt to changing circumstances and you don't whine about stuff you can't change. |
