Hi everybody,
this is gonna be a bit of a rant, but please try and read on, I'm pretty sure you will be interested and frankly I think it hasn't been said enough yet. It's about the price tag on certain objects in the game these days. I am quite familiar in the production field of the game and know a bit about economics and frankly I'm rather appalled. Every time I check escrow or the market, I canĘt help wonder which greedy people actually expect an over 1000% profit margin on their sales.
As most of you know, every item in the game has a NPC price. You should be able to produce an item below ą well lets say for arguments sake, 5 x NPC price. That means that 10 x NPC price as a sales price would give you 100% profit (and most of us know it gives a bit more than that). Any businessman (and woman) would be delighted with a 100% profit marginą but there seem to be a lot of greedy idiots in the game that require more ą
Lets take a look at some examplesą well known examplesą
The Improved Cloaking Device II ą lets start big ą NPC price tagą under 1.2 M iską production priceą canĘt be more than 6M isk (if you have proof itĘs more than that, let me know, Keitaro Baka in game) and yet the sell priceą well IĘve seen one for 67M iską but most are 80M iską That means the seller expects a profit of 1200% ą That is nothing other than greed, plain simple and vile.
Next Interceptorsą NPC price below 350k iską so you can build ęem under 2M easily ą in fact most are under 1.5M to buildą so asking 7M for them is greedyą and donĘt think itĘs a bit of self preservationą the larger corporations just build them internally ą so keeping the price high just to try and stop them from becoming a weapon against you is no valid argumentą the ones youĘre likely to get against you are usually much cheaper. Now if the price was a bit more balancedą like 3.5M or even lessą starters would be able to start using them for other things than shopping trolleysą
Tech II modsą ahhą you all know and want themą People are selling RCU IIĘs with over 1000% profitą they are built for less than 300k isk and sold for ą oow itĘs prolly 4M isk nową same goes for a lot of other tech II items. Sure the veterans with their multi-multi million isk accounts have no problem with thatą but most of them can get them at base price from friendsą but for us starters (IĘm about 3 months old, so I can now use a lot of tech II skill wise) the price makes sure we wonĘt buy themą ThatĘs a market that is being ignored ą for what? Are the producers scared that their devices will be used against them? DonĘt worryą they will anywayą but now only by people that can afford to lose them, mostly the veteransą
WouldnĘt it be more fun to fight with starters and growing players that can actually do somethingą that can afford a cloaking device because itĘs only 10M iską which makes fighting that bit more interesting? Do you pvp/pk people really want to gank newcomers and fight/run away from veterans? (nothing personal, no offense etc.)
DonĘt any of you think that making 100% profit is about enough? DonĘt you greedy people realize that making the prices acceptable (ok 100% profit is still very much and you can be pretty much proud of getting that) is actually good for the market and the game, especially for the players that are new-ish?
Well I am too much of a realist to think this rant will have much effect, but I can always hopeą
I hope some of you producers will come together and make a deal with each otherą to start selling at less than 200% profit ą and force the other sellers to either drop the prices or just lose their marketą I hope even one person would start advertising low prices, which give him/her a great profit, but also makes the items accessible for a broader marketą and generally have the whole market to him-/herselfą
I eagerly await the time this happensą and I hope to do it myself SOONÖ if the lottery goes well for me.
Stay safe and have fun,
Keit

this is the 3rd rant about prices in 24 hours. i make plenty in empire space to buy most of what i want, its annoying having people that want rare items when they only play for like 30min a day complaining all the f***ing time.

Edited by: Archa on 19/07/2004 12:50:07 i think you forgot the calculation of the tech2 bpo price. A tech 2 blueprint can be about 3 billion isk. You have to earn that back.

Yep, another day, another rant from a newbie.
Do you have any idea how long it takes to get a tech 2 BPO or how much effort goes into getting it? If people are willing to pay 4mil for something then it's a very stupid seller that puts it on the market for 1mil.
And as for the level of profit, who cares? I've seen things sold on the market that go for less than the actual mineral cost. As long as the person buying and the person selling are both happy, why do you care how much the item changed hands for?
Eve is, as CCP are aiming for, a player driven economy. If you don't want to pay 7 mil for an interceptor, then don't pay it. Simple, isn't it? A lot of corps offer BYOM deals anyway, go collect the components yourself and you'll get it a lot cheaper.

I've restarted playing EVE for 2.5 weeks now - and my account was from a fresh start. I dont see any problem with current prices of items - there is a demand for them, EVEN at these prices. Thats how markets work - and the profit margin is irrelevant.
If there are people that want to buy them, and the manifacturing people dont compete themselves to death (Read : there arent many people able to manifacture the item) then the prices will stay pretty high.
I dont understand why someone with 3 months of playing time behind him complains about an odd 80 million - even for me, with just a few weeks of playing time behind me can afford it if I want to (and I dont want it). So you surely can.
Are you still mining trit? EARN MONEY and dont worry about pricing. Get a corporation that produces items themselves! make friends that give you good deals.
Or just find another way to do what you want, and dont try to hit that 40" brick wall with your head all the time trying to break through it.
Adapt to EVE, dont try to adapt EVE to you.

Edited by: Asharee Intrefer on 19/07/2004 14:04:37 Keitaro, if you can get me complete sets of Ares components for 1.5M I would be very happy to produce as many of them as you like for 2.7M each. But with the short supply of some components like reactors and thrusters I'm unable to get even the required amount of Fusion Reactors for less than a million...
Oh, and if the "NPC price" you're quoting is the insurance payout then it may be a bugged value. Interceptor insurances used to pay out about 3 million isk, but that's still only representative of the recycling value and nothing else.

Edited by: HornO on 19/07/2004 14:21:01 I love these rants especially if you read across them, one guy says people are making too much money too easily then another starts with things are too expensive!
Of course as we all know tech 2 BP drop all the time from the smallest rats in 1.0 space so everyoneĘs making themąright?
LetĘs take a look at very simple supply and demand:
If product A isnĘt being mass-produced then whoever controls the production of product A controls the price. Take into consideration that company A has already expended a great deal of time / money to get into the position of being able to offer Product A.
To make producing product A worthwhile and to recoup some of the costs already outlaid product A sells for a greater market price based on demand.
To make this easy letĘs say Product A is a new Tech 2 turret and product B is a small but perfectly functional carrot.
Product A is going to be wanted by pretty much EVERYONE, as such the company puts out this new gun at a price where people with money can afford it but at a much inflated price from itĘs production costs. This is so the company makes back money or is compensated for the time it took to acquire the means to make the product and then begin turning a profit while they still have one of the few copies around.
Product B is hated by children and hidden in food by parents in order to get them to eat it. Parents also lie and try to sell it on the basis that it improves eyesight and rabbits love them. People DONĘT want carrot Tech 2 so the company making it needs to make it attractive at a price, a very very cheap price.
Is this getting through to everyone yet or am I going to have to draw a picture of a rabbit eating a carrot?

Ahh it has begun... a bit harder than i thought, but ok, here we go:
First of all I was only talking about non-named, non-unique items and ships. If you get a drop ... a certain named or unique item... ofcourse that's totally different has nothing to do with this, my rant was on the normal buildable items, eventhough the tech II bpo's are not on market, but only available through R&D.
I have absolutely no problem with people trying to get the best prices possible for their loot.
Next... fairimear I know i've seen you hang around in the gallente channel so you must be talking about other people.
Now on topic again:
I do kinda know how much it takes to get a tech II bpo... I've been doing almost 6 weeks of R&D with a lvl 3 now, still nothing ofcourse, but lets not forget you don't need to take on all of their missions (and a lot of people don't do any missions for them) so the cost is more of a time issue (those pesky 14 jump courier missions). And as for the cost of the bpo... you can always try and sell those (good luck) for a good price... it's more of an investment that doesn't diminish in price than one you need to get back through sales...
And Rodge ... I never said I didn't understand it... because I understand all too well... The problem is that the price doesn't really drop after the initial period... people remain greedy.
Originally by: "farimear" i another good reason is to stop so many 1 month old players getting their horrible mits on bs.
Well not really... the other way around actually imho... See... a BS is not that hard to train for... and certainly not hard to help get for a newb if you know where to mine and do missions and hunt. In fact, getting them a BS is prolly a bit more profitable for the corp... Why go for elite frigs when you can get s BS in the same time, ready do make easy money on lvl 3 kill missions... with these prices I'd expect more fully tech I equipped BS's in the hands of starters if only because the veterans are making buckets of isk on their products.
But I have to agree with you obscuroditus... It's not that much of a problem for Keitaro... it's more a personal thing... If I had the choice I would destroy all these ott markets today, but i don't have the resources to do that sadly... So it's a personal rant and I don't expect much to happen anyways... just a shame for the game... it would be much more interesting with reasonable pricing in my opinion...
Keit
PS I would have replied aerlier but something came along that needed my full attention, my apologies..
So the other 2 replies:
Asharee I'll keep that in mind, thnx for the offer. There are however still some non-greedy people out there and last night I was able to purchase an Ares for 3M on market (and they sold like crazy, wasn't even able to pruchase one for a friend). It's good to know there are people like you around tho, thnx.
And lol HornO, you are right indeed... but define mass-production... I think my CEO built and sold over 300 RCU II's already (and yes at greedy prices, luckily we are buddies and he doesn't mind me saying so ;)) and we're a small corporation... I'm pretty sure we can qualify at least that one as mass-produced... Nevertheless yes, the market works the way it works and with so many rich people in the universe prices will stay high.

Prices drop on things when there is competition. Until there is enough competition on these high priced items, the price will stay high. That's how it works.

Hi Keitaro,
The biggest problem with the most wanted Tech2 Equipment is availability of Components - and Production time.
Tech 2 production takes a lot of time (not play-time - but just time) so if a corporation is able to sell 90% or better of their production with 1000% Margin why in hell should they lower the price ? they couldn¦t satisfy increasing demand and thus the price is fine - for Customer and dealer.
Once the market is fed up with the item in question and stocks are build up - expect the price to drop / competition to increase.
Our Corporation produces Small Shield Booster II and Small Cap Booster II - we sell nice amounts and can barely keep supply flowing in (you just can¦t produce more than X items a day ..) and I expect prices to skyrocket once new & more advanced frigates become available - demand will increase (with same supply, or even worse depending on the Component market..) driving the prices even higher.
The tech2 market is a young market - we will see some more goldrushs - we already saw (and probably will see more) dying products (smartbomb II anyone - hehe). but there will also be cash cows in the system - I¦m pretty sure the market for t2 Afterburners for example will rarely be fed up - they are regularly lost and replaced - keeping the demand high and securing a nice sell price (could anyone imagine having a Mining Drone II BP? - i bet you can¦t set the price so high that you won¦t sell every item the moment it pops out of the factory slot)
the rules of the market are quite simple to be honest - if you think the price is too expensive - don¦t buy it - if the majority of Customers does the same - Producers stock up and will lower the price to increase demand. If the majority of Customers considers the price fair - they will buy - don¦t expect prices to drop in that scenario ;) - they are more likely to raise if the producers can¦t keep up with the demand.
you are right on 1 point anyway:
The monster Mega Wallets of the 0.0 Veterans - taking their morning bath in Megacyte-pools do not improve that situation for the majority of players - but they terribly hold the majority of ISK.

As an aside, I will note that I find it entertaining when people talk about the horrors of greed in a free market. The free market is basically -founded- on the principle that self-interest would drive the outcome -- in other words, some share of greed is -needed- for it to work.
Anyway -- that's me pontificating. I'll be quiet now.
