Edited by: BaJaiah on 19/07/2004 14:13:41 OK - here we go... Please read all of this post and give it a serious consideration.
What is EVE and what should it be?
What we have today is a gameplay that allows alternate characters to make just about any action possible within the restrictions in the game. We've had quite a lot of "grief play" which people would only do with alternate characters. Would you steal from a large corporation with your main character without consideration? Would you have made a suicidal Kestrel boombrun with your main? Would you scam everybody on your path with your main?
So much for grief play, now lets focus a bit on roleplay.
So you got a main character venturing in the EVE universe. Suddenly he recieves a large deposit from (in the characters point of view) a total stranger who spends all his time stealing/mining/scamming whatever. He (the main character) even has the ability to know everybody and everything this stranger experiences. Now - some day that stranger might disappear. Who knows - he might have offended one to many or just got sick of his hairdo. Basicly gotten himself in some kind of trouble where the only solution was a one-way trip to the recycle plant
But have no worries, a new stranger will almost certainly establish "contact"...
CCP have made a persistent universe for us to enjoy - bravo
Now please make in consistent, beliveable and cut down the grief play where no retribution is possible. In short - make it so that alternate characters can only play on the beta servers...
Now - let the Widowmakers fly

NO the type of exploit you talk about can easilly be done using alternate acounts and CCP can't do a thing about that. This will just punish people whho like to RP from two perspectives (Amarr, Mimattar).
Rise of Valhalla is now recruiting. We are looking for players of any level of experience. Please contact me or SSJ2VEGETA |

i think you should have to select a main character, and any alts have there main character stated in the info. this would stop people stealing etc and not affect the people who use there alts.

Agreed
Multiple accounts is just as bad as multiple characters, and I don't belive CCP think its a good idea to get rid of those...
However, being the target of grief play from alt's really kills this game imho
I've pettitioned one such instance and got the reply "..there is nothing we can do about it..."
Now i could make an alt a take revenge on the other alt - but who would care anyway ?
Having a game like this open to just about any abuse because of the single point of alt's is just not acceptable for me... Its the major source of grief and inconsistency in EVE and I for one would much rather have the restriction of only playing with one character.

There is only one problem, how do you define the main character? Its not always the first character created in account etc..
One solution would be that all characters in same account are listed in info
-- Everyone dies, it's simply a matter of time |

Easily solved - the character with most skillpoints got to be the main
Which leads us to every character should be listed in relation to billing account. Character with most skillpoints first etc. That way you could avoid most grief play and spying. Hell, people might even begin to roleplay and stick with a (few) main characters instead of abuseing...

What about people who have devoted a sizeable amount of skill time to an alt? I know people with 70/20/10 and 75/25/0 distribution in their chrs, are you saying they will just loose all that Exp?
This wasnt done on release and cant be done now.
As for the RP part of it, the Roleplay portion of the game are really starting to annoy me with the constant assumption that EVERYBODY is or at least should be a roleplayer. I love book based RPGs like ADnD, Vampire, GURPS etc, but a computer game isnt the same and some people have NO desire to roleplay, accept this and stop trying for force the roleplay philosophy down my throat.

I have two playing characters (and a 'bank' char), skills divided about 50/50 and I use both about equally. One (this one) is a miner, builder, newbie helper, and forum troll. Other participates in corp ops with some friends of mine. Its really nice to be fooling around in low-sec space far from my base, and not have to spend all my time heading back to tend to the labs and stuff.
Point being, they let you have multiple chars for a reason, I support getting more alt-char info out there but Im (ovbiously) against trying to restrict their use. Plus, not that many people take role playing seriously, in fact I dont know anyone who plays this game that is into that stuff. A lot of us just like a good space sim, and having one character that can only be in one place at a time can get overly restrictive. _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base? |

Appreciate your feedback. And to get a couple of things straight. I don't wanna enforce roleplay on everybody. I'm just stating that the game mechanics as they are now is prohibitative to roleplay. What use is my character actions towards an alt. The player behind the alt will just laugh and recycle it if things gets to though... Now that is one point - but my wrath could result that my corp is suddenly in war with the players main characters corp (revenge could be a motive here). As it is now I have absolutely no way of knowing which powers I'm might be stirring.
And I do understand that a lot of players are having fun with two characters, but can any of you seriously claim that it isn't bad for the consistency of EVE ?
So your character is stuck in 0.0 sec systems because your the worst pirate to ever roam the dark space of EVE. Ooh you have problems getting resources/guns/ammo ? No sweat, make an alt and make him transport stuf to ya. Why on earth would you ever try and estabilsh a trade route with other players - tsssh What a friggin waste of time - interacting with players. Naah man, much more fun to just blow em up
(I hope you see my point as well as understands the irony)
Regarding wasted skillpoints, a possible solution could be to transfer em to the main in one way or another (+1 implant for each 500K skillpoint or something). I know this is probably never gonna happen from one day to another. But the alts could be made to "fade" away. I know many would if some of the changes discussed here was to be implemented. Cheers

you want to see less alts dieing at the repo plant then let them train skills while the main is training them. This will slow the alt death rate because ppl wont want to start new with a chr. And yes i know this brings up so called other problems like you can now have a miner chr and a fighter chr at the same time so what you could still only use one at a time.
