Obligatory question: Since your question involves what skills to train - is training towards guns a viable option? Delayed damage pisses a bit on all attempts to missilesnipe, and does so by design.
If you really want to stay at range and lob missiles, uh, heavy missiles I guess? Drake and Tengu training yay? |

Missile sniping is subpar because you have to wait for a missile to travel all that way, and your opponent can just warp off before impact. You'd be better off with a Naga or Rokh with railguns, but if you must use missiles, a fun idea is to MWD straight at your opponent while firing missiles. Due to the doppler effect, you actually increase your DPS by decreasing the distance between volleys. Theoretically, if you can get going the same speed as your missiles travel, you could start out at 250km, and fire missiles all the way in. They would all hit pretty much simultaneously as a giant wall of missiles, which would be a ridiculous amount of damage and VERY cool.
Again though, you're going to need a REALLY patient tackler. |

As a CNR pilot, it hurts me to admit this...the advice in this thread is good. For PvE, it doesn't really matter. your deeps will be good. And the travel time issues won't matter over a long mission or complex clear.
That said, ultimate performance will be better in PvE and PvP with a turret-based ship. And in solo or small gang PvP, avoid long range missile boats like the plague. Given that that kind of PvP is usually short and sweet, the travel time issues DO matter. A lot.
You're better served going turrets from the start. But do what you like more...fun is what matters most. |

LOL naga or a rokh, take a look at the caldari hybrids they all fail and are in a serious need for a damage buff, if you want sniping i'd go with Artillery |

Missile sniping is p bad.
The only ship I've seen that this is half viable on is a Cerb. |

Depending on what kind of fleets you are in the advice in this thread is true. You don't want to bring a missile sniper to an alpha maelstrom fleet.
However if you're in small gangs where things don't instapop or in a full gang of long range missile ships then missile "bombardment" is fine.
So ships that are good at this: Drake does a decent job, hits out to around 70km, dunno if tha't really "long range" but it's more range than a lot of ships. Cerberus is made for it. 400 dps at 200km is pretty easy with a cerb. They're reasonably quick too. Caldari navy caracals do a good job out to about 100km, they align as fast as most frigates and can sport a decent max speed. Plus they're cheap compared to cerbs and with the way prices are climbing drakes too.
So in answer to your question,
Skills: Heavy missiles + support skills
Equip: Heavy missiles
Ships: drake cerb CNI
I plan on living forever.......so far, so good. |
