I just went to get a sandwich and the bread is going mouldy. It's only 3 freekin days old.
Has anyone else noticed that bread these days is not lasting as long as it used to? I remember a loaf used to last a week or more before it started going off, now it seem to be only 3 or 4 days. Consdering how much is costs now, I'd expect it to last longer than it used to.

Stop leaving it uncovered in a damp cupboard then? My bread usually lasts at least 5 or 6 days. Is yours pre-sliced or something? Increased surface area could make it more susceptible to mould than normal bread. ____________________

A lot of places I shop only have factory bread, and you never know how long it's been in transit/sitting on shelf. Also, health-nut people pushing for fewer preservatives doesnt help I bet.

I've noticed the expiry dates on loafs is shorter. Used to be 4 days for most loaves, but you'd sometimes see ones with shorter. They seems to keep their older loaves on the shelves longer, before putting them on the cheap shelves. Maybe they're not throwing so much out.
Also, consider a breadmaker. Fresh made bread = yum.

Unless you live with someone who refuses to wash his hands after applying aftershave, then goes and man-handles the bread while slicing it.

Leave it in the freezer.
Pull it out as you need it, if it's only processed sliced bread there's no reason not to do it.
Fresh unsliced loafs, you only expect 2 days max anyway, 3-4 for toasting.
Umm anyway, same with crisps, the old plastic bags of walkers back in the 80's used to have a 6 month absolute minium sell by on the back (normaly around a year) now your lucky if you see 2 or 3 months, you'd think foil bags fresh for longer and all that

In college, some of the lads and myself in our physics classes made up a 'bread' song. It consisted of us singing the word bread - I would post the lyrics, but the only word was 'bread', so it wouldn't make much sense. Even less sense than the concept of the 'bread' song...... lol.

Edited by: Kessiaan on 23/12/2008 04:05:42 Keep it in the freezer, don't buy bread labeled organic/non-GM/natural/hippie/anything else that implies no preservatives. If only one or two pieces is modly just toss those and keep the rest (though it'll mold up pretty fast too by that point if you don't use it right away)

Do you keep it in the fridge?
Take it back to the store and complain. They'll probably give you another to keep you quiet.

What type of bread are we talking about? It highly depends on the bread how long it lasts. Can be anything between 3 days and 3+ weeks depending on type and storage conditions.

I stick all mine in the freezer as soon as I get home, only get 1 loaf out at a time which lasts a few days. If it's fresh out the freezer I eat it, but if it's slightly stale I always toast it.
Most disgusting thing ever is when you leave an entire pack of bread rolls in the back of a cupboard and forget about them, only to find them a month later and they just turn into lumps of mould... you ever had that feeling where you felt like vomiting just from looking at something?

That and simply checking the sell by date helps alot.
