type?...er... that is tough to interpret.. I have a couple responses though...
1. Gank (buffer tank with a lot of dps)
2. Blasterboats (self explanatory)
3. Megathron or thorax imo
I can probably give you a better answer if you explain a tad more.

I would personally recommend starting out in battlecruisers for PVP. They are versatile, tough and can dish out a good amount of firepower, plus they aren't too high of a drain on the wallet to lose a couple.
The best Battlecruiser in the game is the Hurricane, although with the changes to lasers the harbinger is also a very decent ship.

yea hurricane is the top of the heap in battlecruisers the only one with 2 damage bonus for the same weapon. one of the only thing make matar worth playing. the most common pvp ship i'd have to go with the rifter. cause every noob who thinks they're a pirate can fly one.

Most common? Thorax probably. That said they tend to be on the losing side in my experience. But I run around in a hurricane or harbinger most so that's to be expected  .

i see megatrones and armageddons all over in low sec... i also spot a lot of deimos and curses and a ship load of drakes and falcons
i very rarely see minimatar battleships, rokhs, feroxes and electronic attack frigates
by far the most favored pvp race of choice is gallente, most common ship - low SP caldari
least popular ship type is caldari sniper boat, most popular gallente DPS boat
ammar gank tank is quite popular, caldari PVE and caldari passive/buffer is popular

These are your more common smaller ships for PvP, often though not necessarily the best.
T1 frigates - Rifters, Punishers, Incursuses
Interceptors - Crows, Taranises, Maledictions, Ares, Stilettos
Assault Ships - Ishkurs, Enyos, Jaguars, Hawks, Wolves, Harpies
T1 cruisers - Thoraxes, Vexors, Ruptures, Stabbers, Caracals (don't ask me why), Blackbirds
Heavy Assault Cruisers - Vagabonds, Ishtars, Deimos, Sacrileges, Zealots
Recon Ships - Falcons, Pilgrims, Curses, Arazus, Rapiers, Huginns
Heavy Interdictors - Onyxes, Broadswords
Battlecruisers - Drakes, Hurricanes, Myrmidons
Command ships - Absolutions, Nighthawks, Sleipners

What's interesting is the big difference between most LowSuck and NoSuck gangs as regards to ship type, much less fits.

The most common pvp ships in Eve are ships that can equip turrets, missile launchers or drones. Some have electronic warfare capabilities too, like ECM, Tracking Disruptors, etc.

Barring POS shoots and big fleet stuff, HACs are the most common type that I see on a daily basis in 0.0. I guess because they they have a good combination of mobility, speed, and firepower.

I think it depends on what walk of eve life you're from. I'm currently in Minmatar Faction warfare, so I see:
Punisher - Stabbed Punishers non-the-less.
Crusader/Malediction - Very VERY popular.
Pilgrims
Zealots
Arbitrators
Harbinger
Armageddon.
On the other hand, thats what I look for, It's not the average. I do tend to see LOTS of megathrons, which is surprising considering all the complaining about the blasters.

May not be common but I prefer to fly the smaller hulls, cruisers and below... I like hit and run ops over super ranged slug fests.
I fly the Rifter, thrasher, stabber and ruppie and their Amarr counter parts. I'm currently working towards the T2 versions.
