I've experienced a "Targetting Failed" message a number of times now in the past few weeks, exclusively when flying ravens against other players. I've lost two ravens now without even firing a shot against battleships/battlecruisers, even when there hasn't been ECM present. The first time I let it slide, however today I felt the need to petition as I lost both my freshly put together rigged torp raven and my alts crusader, I had no trouble pointing my target with the crusader, however even in the several minutes that it took for my targets backup to arrive from other systems (he was alone in the system when I engaged, over the following few minutes 4 of his corp mates turned up from several systems away) I was never able to get a lock on him at all, though he was flying a battlecruiser and every time my targetting "failed" I set it to target again (since it went back to the default "untargetted state" on my selected object window) several times over several minutes.
I was curious to see if anyone else had been experiencing similar problems with their targetting (not to be confused with the delayed targetting issue, where the target's actually been targeted but the targetting bar remains for a little longer after the target was actually aquired - "Target appears before the locking progress bar finishes: when target turns MWD on during lock. ")

oddly enough, I've had this happen targetting asteroids while mining. Unfortunately, I have no evidence whatsoever to back it up. But because of other problems I've been having, I'm now running LogServer when I play Eve, so I'll check the log if it happens again. |

Thanks, I hadn't thought of checking my logs, and indeed it confirmed what I experienced. Had I been able to target as normal, I'd have been able to carry out a standard gank, giving me enough time to leave / engage further targets as they entered.

when i warp in on a target within range and immediately begin to lock
when a target warps in on me in range to lock
when a target comes out of cloak
either of these times i experience a full on 10 to 30 second (yes, i count some of them) window where i cannot lock and im forced to just sit there and take damage or warp out while im met with constant "(notify) Your attempt to target <ship> failed.", it happens regardless of whether i control click the target in overview, control click the target in the main view, or right click -> "target" the ship in both overview and main view.
this is at the very least, making me gouge out my eyes with spoons, sitting there for about 30 seconds while either there is a juicy hauler that needs relieving of cargo or a very quick target that urgently needs tackling is just not playable. im frequently on the test server so if anyone wants to spend a bit of time testing this out im more than happy to.
an example i can provide for all 3 scenarios that were recently experienced (which were all in the test server, this still happens on TQ regardless)
in BF2 - im in a hyperion, i warp in on a megathron, we're within 5,500m of eachother and we both immediately begin to lock, the megathron locks me and goes into my armor by the time i get to lock him (this was 12 seconds). no form of EWAR was present.
in BF2 again against another player, im waiting in a hyperion, and a dueller in a typhoon warps in, same case as above, he quickly locks me and aggresses, and gets me to half armor (forgot reps because im too busy going bat**** insane over lack of lock) before i finnaly lock him (this was 27 seconds). no form of EWAR was present.
in FFA1 im waiting 150km below the beacon in a sniper rokh, a manticore decloaks and locks me a few seconds later 117km from me and manages to fire off 4 volleys of cruise missles before again decloaking, roughly 6-7 seconds between each volley, more than enough time to lock even a frigate with 2 SB IIs, the entire time "(notify) Your attempt to target Manticore failed.". no form of EWAR was present.

In cases like this, do you keep trying to lock repeatedly, or do you try to lock, wait, then try to lock again?
Ie. do you hammer the button constantly, or do you hit it once every few seconds?
Basically what can happen is that you can end up sending too many requests to lock a target at one time and the system cannot properly process your request because it's being flooded. ____________________________ I break things.Ö

Edit: And I'm attempting to target once, with CTRL and one click on overview (like most...)

I and many of my alliance m8's have noticed that targetting is acting up again.
It seems the old bug, where your lock timer constantly cycles without targetting, is back. Its extremely annoying, and very dangerous, And it is not related to lag at all, as this happened on Saturday, and my gang m8s were happily zooming about, shooting everything in sight, while i couldnt even lock a single thing. (no i was not jammed)
The ship remained responsive the entire time, in that i could move, and activate modules, but targetting just wouldnt happen, timer & bar would get to 0, and the recycle the full time. I also noticed that when i activated my sensor booster, it did not effect the lock time.

The actual targetting failed notification came up at random times during the targetting process - sometimes straight away, sometimes at the end of the cycle when you'd normally expect the target to lock.
Also, I'm not sure if it's just coincidence but I've only had this problem whilst flying ravens, I've tried to replicate it with other ships and have not had any issues despite trying different circumstances.

We're looking at this on our end as well, though we're not seeing the same behavior.
Can you folks please submit bug reports which include a logserver file of the problem? (read here for tips)
Please also include a description of what all is going on when the problem happens, what you have fitted, etc.
Also: Does the issue still happen if you use other methods to target? (such as using the target button in the 'selected item' window rather than ctrl+click.. or target from icons in space rather than the overview.. ____________________________ I break things.Ö

For me this happens since long time to.
If i lock from overview / or with ctrl+mouse everything works fine.
It only happens if i activate modules in front of the lock to have instant hit on it if the lock targets the ship.
For more explantation i will add a video if DT ends up.. it never bugged me much but had to write a petition today and found this thread so better i add some now.
Like i said ..for example you sit on a gate camp with your ceptot - and wait for a target. You hit the scrambler and webber so they hit if the lock finished on the target. If you do it like that activating the mod infront of the lock this bug happens to me all the time.. you get failed lock warning or delayed lock.
If you just lock the targets/object just with ctrl+mouse or on overview ..and hit mods like scrambler / miners / guns or every other highslot mod you gettin fine.
Well wait until DT ill show ya the vid =) shame this bug never got tracked down..knowed it like year or more ^^*chougs

ya well like all the time if you try it to proof it..it works fine :(
so i repley to myself.. it happens sometimes.. not alltime..
may you need to stay some time online or few ppl need to be on server or you need to have a amount of logfile size to get this bug up.

Im 100% sure that when u hit f1-f8 So ur guns start blinking and THEN hold control and click the target from ur overview, ull get this message for 3 minutes, no mather what u flying ... Its a bug, Hope it gets fixed soon ... Same goes to the gatecampers who are w8ing targets with theyr scrams blinking, u wont be able to lock ur targets (lag,bug,luck)

My corp m8s and I are having the same issue with lock timing resetting at end of lock. Gates camp engagement is very interesting, too interesting now :(. I thought it was lag or something I was doing. I know see it as a issue with game. CCP, I would strongly suggest looking into this issue. This thread is enough proof for getting back ships lost in engagements.

Same problem for me. I have also noticed that as I fire my finishing volley on an enemy, I lose my lock 100% of the time when flying a taranis.
This has actually allowed two targets to warp as my overview showed their ship exploding.

The only time i have this issue is if i turn guns or missiles on BEFORE the lock so there flashing. If i leave the mods online i can never lock the target until i stop the pre arm flashing and then relock the target. Try it guys :)

yea this happened to me as well, i submitted a bug report/petition for it and i can't remember what they said, but it was something like they didn't see anything wrong on their end i must have been desynched or some crap like that.
and i have noticed it's when i have modules pre-fired (aka blinking). i lost 2 navy mega's like this at two separate occasions. one i was sitting on a gate and he came through and this happened (i about threw my keyboard out the window) the second time our gang was fighting another gang with a navy mega in it, i warped in late and was trying to target the mega; everyone else died while i tried targetting and shooting the mega. would have had him (he was in 5% struct) if i could have fired a single shot before i died.
the weird thing is when i was in that fight, i could target other people, just not the navy mega. that was just plain annoying. but it's happened on other ships as well but usually when i have modules blinking.

I have had this happen two or three times in the last week or three myself. Today when it happened my gang mates got the guy tackled and held, and I tried repeatedly several times to lock and kept getting "targeting failed" before I tried to relog real quick. When I came back in game I was still there ( was in bubble ) and already had the target locked.
I don't use jump clones.
