Hello, I've found that basic implants are about 7.2 million isk in my region. Would it be worth it to purchase them? Purchasing four would set me back about 29M ISK. I have about 80M. What would you do? I'm trying to figure out whether or not the added attributes will really speed up my training time.

They will speed up your training time, which will definitely be helpful. However, the first rule of EVE is still in effect: Don't fly what you can't afford to loose. If you're a carebear, it's definitely a good idea to invest in some decent headgear, but if you're gonna be in combat (and you're a newbie at it) it might not be smart to risk a pile of cash that size. -----

Thanks Horatius. I'm thinking about getting my feet wet in the Gallente Militia, so I'll probably wait on buying the implants. 30M would buy a lot of fitted incursi.

you don't have to buy all of them at once, if you want to train a skill to 5, you can only buy the 2 attributes that effect that skill.
Also, if you die with implants in and a skill is training the bonus the implants gave you stay in effect for as long as you do not stop skilling(that skill).

one thing you should know...
If you run enough missions and get enough LP, you can buy the basic implants from the LP stores for about 2.5 mil and (IIRC about 5K LP. You can even get the standard and the improved ones too, at a discount with enough LP.

Uhm.. that's wrong. He can buy 1bil implants and never lose them.. as long as he has a jump clone that stays in highsec (and is not involved in combat).. the learning clone >_>

One day you will have plenty of ISK, but you will always need more skills. If you run missions, you can get them even cheaper if you spend LP, if you don't intend to save it for some other items or ships.

I'm running level 1 missions for the Federal Intelligence Office. Basic implants cost 5250LP and 5.25M ISK. Are there better deals from other corps? I'm a long way from 20K lP. I guess I have to move up in mission level and do some reading about jump clones.

You should also train Social skills like Negociation (gives a 5% bonus to reward for every level).

Edited by: Buga Buga on 25/12/2008 22:35:02 You cant have two implants on the same slot. If first implant uses slot 1 and the second (+5) is the same slot.. youll have to remove the first one.

So long as you are speaking of +1 - +3 implants, removing the old one and putting in an upgrade isn't a big problem (no, really, after you have enough skills that kind of isk is not a problem).
When you have a +4 implant in, moving to a +5 don't make a so remarkable difference, and the cost of the old implant isn't so cheap. At that point the best option is to have several jumpclones.
To get a jumpclone you need a corporation with stations with the medical service and 8+ standing, plus the skill Infomorph Psychology (1 jumpclone clone each level of the skill).
At that point you can switch clones moving from one to another every 24 hours.
With 4 extra clones I usually have 1 with +5 implants and one with the old +4 set, one with +3 implants for semi-safe activities in 0.0 and low sec and 2 for PvP (usually with +2 or +3 implants only for the skills that I am training).
I am a follower of the Skill God so I am even excessive in my use of implants, but you will find your personal balance between usefulness and cost.
Remember some thing:
1) you can get implants from +1 to +4 from the Material for war preparation storylines missions (the level of the implant is equal to the level of the mission). I usually keep them as spares in reserve.
2) if you have some commercial sense you can get better return from your LP requesting other items and then selling them than buying learning implants.
3) you can place buy orders for the implants in the station/systems with storyline agents and, with a little patience, get the implants for a lower cost that buying them directly from the sell orders.

If your not PVPing, I don't see why you wouldn't want to get the biggest implants you can. NPCs will never pod kill you. If you are PVPing, I'd stick with +1s or +2s until you have a fatter wallet.

You can get a free jumpclone from Estel and then you can fly in pvp in the militia in that clone without fear of losing your new implants in the other one.

buying attribute enhancing implants with lp is generally a waste of lp.
the decision depends on what you want to do with that 80 mil.
although at least go plug in a +1 set.

I'm a little sleepy so someone might have mentioned this and I missed it.
When you remove an implant, the implant is destroyed.
So, it might not make sense to move yourself up the implant ladder one at a time. Save up and get a set you can afford for the missions you are running. I bought +2s as soon as I could, and when I got in to lvl4 missions, bought +4s.
Others have mentioned jump clones. This is a good idea. Grind missions for one corporation until you have +8 standing with them. Then train the skills for a jump clone. After that, go to one of their stations with a medical bay and install a jump clone. When the day comes to fly pvp, go to a DIFFERENT station than your jump clone, jump into that non-implant having clone, and go kill. When you are done pvping, go back to the station the non-implant clone was in and jump back to your implant clone. You can only jump once every 24 hours.
Yes, you can have multiple clones. One for training, one for pvp, one for the other side of the universe.....

One thing you can do if you are new and don't have a lot of money - is to go do the 10 mission sets for all three schools for your faction. Doing all three schools will get you a complete set of +1 implants.
You can also do all the schools for any other faction if you want some spares. You may just need to go through a few more of that schools tutorial agents before the Event agent (who gives out the 10 mission set) will talk to you.
The list of schools and their locations I know about is in my sig.
In addition to the implants you'll get a number of free frigates and skill books - of which you can keep any extras as spares or sell them. So of those skill books are worth a good bit - from the stand point of a new player.

I think someone touched on it earlier about not buying implants that are only one higher, especially when you get into +3 and higher. I am running 3s now, and have no real plans to go higher than that until I have the disposable ISK, and even then, I'll just skip 4s if I can. I did alot of focusing on my learning skills as well, which makes a difference too! Also, you might think about having a backup supply of 2s, just in case the worst happens. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

I have three or four jumpclones and each has a different set of implants. Most have two +4 implants. For example, I have a +4 intelligence/memory clone and a +4 perception/willpower clone, as well as an unimplanted clone for 0.0 PVP.
A jump clone is like an extra clone that you can jump into. Once you have 8.0+ standings with an NPC corp you can buy jump clones from that NPC corp's medical bays, and you can "jump" from clone to clone once per day. Each can have a different set of implants stored.
