Hi All: Unfortunately, I spend time mining in hi-sec space. I have 2 options: jet can or not. 1. If I use a jet can, I can lose everything to can flipping. The risk is real and my options for dealing with it by myself almost non-existent. 2. If I mine into my Covetor's cargo hold it takes a lot longer and is boring as dirt (no offense to any soil or related specialists).
What if roids existed with much higher grades of ore (super dense veld etc.) for example that required specialized strip miners and perhaps related equipment that must be monitored and constantly "tweaked" while being used. Let's say that gas pockets etc. must be avoided.
Perhaps the density of the ore has to me compensated for as it varies. Doesn't much matter. Point is that with skill (real world) this type of ore may be mined. If the miner does not use such skill or does so badly, damage to the mining equipment and even the ship could result. Why do all this?
Well, as a solo player I feel like I can't really compete past the cruiser class because I can't afford damage etc. This type of asteroid might help. I know my other option (many would say the "better" option) is to join a corp. Trouble is I don't play regularly so I can't keep up my end of any corp commitments.
OTOH: This type of mining would fulfill two criteria: 1. Make substantially more isk. 2. Require skill and guts to perform: In game terms this means it would be FUN! This eliminates the boredom (aka "grind").
What do you think??
Cheers, Bryce.

If they did something that required interaction but produced a much higher yield, that would be outstanding.
If it required changing the frequency of the laser, or adding certain amounts of fuel, something that a macro couldn't do cause it would require feedback on the part of the player.
For Example:
Super Dense Veldspar +100% Yield
Requires: Multi-Frequency Modulated Strip Miner
In the processing, the rock gave feedback, putting your lasers at 107% so you had to scale them back by 7%
Or, dense pocket hit, efficiency reduced by 11%, you have to increase them by 11%
Something, anything to keep the miners entertained and to frustrate the macros.

I checked the Patch Notes menu item without joy. Could you perhaps point the way to this information?
Cheers, Bryce.

All of this sounds terrific. Being able to thwart macro miners is a very pleasant byproduct.
The interactivity is exactly what I want to reduce the mind blowing boredom.

Best thread opening ever.
You're not supposed to do it solo, MMORPG not RPG but yes more interaction would certainly make things more interesting and serve to defeat macros.

Maybe you like the idea of Alloy Mining for a higher value mining experience?
Or maybe other stuff from that thread? Just drop a post there.

Oh wow, that is a very big discussion you've got going. I will take some time to read thru it before I offer any suggestions.
If you think the central idea here (having to actively change or "balance" your mining lasers based on asteroid feedback) is a good one, feel free to incorporate it. Keep in mind that the result of not staying on top of this feedback is not just wasted ore but damage to your equipment (similar to that described for mex mining).
I like to prospecting part of your idea. Especially as it might make can flipping less common. Actually, it will likely just lead to can flipping specialists who have to learn to prospect first.
Cheers, Bryce.
