Hello i have made a caldari about a week ago. Well i plan to start pvp and becoming a pirate. Though i keep hearing people bash on caldari for the lack of pvp ships. What wrong with them? should i start spec minmatar for it?

The problem with caldari and pvp is caldari ships are shield tankers and shield modules req mid slot (booster, hrdnrs, etc). In pvp mids like warp dis, webs, cap bstrs, and mwd/ab are also required to be succeful in solo piracy so a caldari ship has a "hard time" fitting a tank while fitting these essential mids. So I would go mim if you want to solo but caldari are good in gang/fleet.

Things change in this game. WhatÆs on top today is total junk the next day. What remains the same is style. The four races have always kept their individual styles. So the question is not one of "best" its one of "best for me."
I donÆt like to talk about ships I donÆt fly and I fly neither of these races ships. I fly Amarr. When I started Amarr were crap. But I chose them because the play style appealed to me. Amarr are armor tanking laser boats with a little bit of drone and if you must, missiles. They tank. They gank. They keep it simple.
How do you want to fight? Uzi or rocket launcher?
Ship design is also a factor. Can you live with looking at the geometric abominations the Caldari fly? Do you really want to fly around in a ship that looks as if it were built by hobos at the dump like the Matari do? Do the shiny golden ships of the Amarr offend your sense of taste? Do Gallente ships give you neon nightmares?

Edited by: Sidus Isaacs on 27/12/2008 23:17:00 Actually, Caldari got a few good pirate ships! :). Harpy for one, Drake is not to bad if used well. The Crow interceptor is ok. Caldari not that awsome when it comes to BS size or recons tho (well, Falcon is totally awsome in a gang, tho not solo, and a Torpedo Raven is nice for high damage against large targets). A merlin or kestrel is a nice start. The cruisers don't cut it imo, caracal is thin as paper and Moa lacks dps. Cerberus HAC is more of a long range vessle, as is Eagle.
Caldari for gangs rocks tho, but not really solo work, alas.
Minmatar is good for pirating, the Rifter is maby the most awsome frig in the game imo :).
I fly Cladari myself, but I cross trained to fly a Sac for my low sec rampaging, an dI used to use a Rifter for it.
Shield tanking in it self is not bad tho, I like it better then armor. Armor is ok, but its slows the ships down, and it reps at end of cycle for active repping. Shield buffer is regenenrative, and need not repairs in stations.
Its all a matter of preference. But for just pirating I would have to say minmatar for more enjyment at low SP. I have not flown Amarr frigs sized ships, but they are ok I guess.
As for the post above, I think caldari designs rock! Its a space game, not an eye candy car show ^^

If you want to be a lone-wolf kind of guy, Caldari are bad. If you want to be an effective soldier in an organised, disciplined fleet, Caldari are unbeatable. Generally, Caldari ships perform one role extremely well, and rely on comrades to fill other roles. In a larger fleet with a good commander, this works very well: you have a specific job to do, and you will do it well - often much much better than any ship from other races can hope to. In smaller (10 or less) fleets, where gang members have to fill more than one role, Caldari ships work less well - only a few can be really useful. For solo work there are almost no Caldari ships that work well. Maybe the Drake.
Minmatar aren't quite the opposite - they have quite a few ships that work well in gangs - but in large fleets they're kind of sub optimal. Their ships also require a lot of SP to fly well, since they variously use gunnery, missiles, drones, shields, armour and speed.
In short: Caldari are about specialisation, Minmatar are about versatility.

Don't be afraid to fly Caldari. i fly primarily Caldari and all it comes down to is YOUR ability to fly the ships correctly and know your role. I alwsys fly my ships in the ways they can be flown. I have a lot of kills in my Manti, just an FYI.
Many people dog this Cal ship but it's great to fly in a gang.

The caldari have a few good solo ships and most of them are ok in a gang. Torp ravens are still quite nasty despite the missile nerf and the drake is a very solid solo and gang ship. I had a 1v1 with a 2006 flashy red pirate drake a week or so ago in my flashy red harbinger. It was a draw. Both of us had MWD and a point but no web. Thus we could extend out of max dps to repair. Had a nice little running gun/missile battle with him ending up 50km from where we started before I called it quits on account of cap boosters running low. Best fight I've had to date and no ships where permanently harmed in it .

Go minmatar if you want to take twice as long to be effective as any other race
Dual tanks, dual weapon systems, High-SP requirement = Minmatar.
Don't get me wrong, I fly minmatar on two accounts and love it. ------------

Start with the Griffin, then the Blackbird and move to Falcons if you want to fly Caldari in small gangs. There are other options of course, but for the most part, ECM is one of the best things a Caldari pilot can bring to the field.
If you want to solo though - think about another race. And my money is on Amarr/Gallente - but thats my preference. ----

A few Caldari ships can solo, but if you want a better range of ships go minmatar. Rifter - solid frigate, good to learn in Stabber - kinda like an overgrown rifter, not amazing but not bad for the cost Rupture - one of, if not the, best tech 1 cruiser. Quite skill intensive but well worth flying. Hurricane - great and versatile battlecruiser
And that's just the tech1 lineup. Caldari tech 1 solo ships... well, drake can work, and Kestrels for a disposable frigate aren't bad but that's about it. Crow and Harpy for tech 2 are ok but pretty pricey to lose on a regular basis, as you can't insure them.
In a gang though, Caldari really shine. ECM is by far the best ewar in the game, the onyx is a close run thing for best heavy int and the cerberus is pretty good. Mind has gone blank right now but I know there are other good gang ships.

either way you'll be starting with the rifter, and you'll be in it for a loooooooooooooong time, and even when you get out of the rifter you'll be going right back to it
if you want to effectively fit something else it'll be a while, and it'll be a while longer until you can afford to lose those ships
so yeah, learn to love the rifter, your (supporting) skills are your best friend for the time being, not how big a ship you can get into and how big your guns are (because pound of pound they're not worth jack if you can't do the damage/tank enough to justify them)
I say this as a fellow noob, who's still training up his supports enough to justify the cruisers and battlecruisers he's got trained :-D
