Edited by: Stepmom on 27/12/2008 12:17:08 I have been looking all over the place for the best way to find Unknown scanning results and it says you can use whichever probe.
I got quite frustrated last night when I found an unknown signature. I set out ladar probes for a first cycle and radar for a second cycle to cover more than 100% of the required zone with bookmarks... spent some time on it.
Then I let the scanning go for about 2.5 hours straight through. Knowing that each scanning takes me 117 secs you can imagine how often I scanned.
I never found that Site!!!! I would like to understand the exact calculations to estimate my probability of finding something.
I have:
- covered ops at 4, -astrometric pin-pointing at 3 - Triangulation at 3 - got a PPH-2 with the appropriate scan probe launcher (sister I think) - I fly an Helios cloacked.
Now I am under the impression that I am doing something wrong or that they have changed the scanning properties since last patch. (They did obviously not fix the scanning bug by which you do not seen the spheres of the probes or the tactical overlay map in the solar-system view).
Did anyone find similar issues? Certainly scanning over 2 hours should deliver a result if you definately cover all the area.

Umknown's found in systems that I have encountered are all cosmic Anomalies that can be scanned out with your system scanner from planets in the system. When I find them I move on because all you have are NPC's in there with bounties or drones with no bounties and min droppings. If that is what you are looking for then by all means go for it.

Cosmic Anomalies are something entirely different. They are similar to unknowns, but smaller, and as you said, don't require probes to find. Unknowns found by searching for cosmic signatures with probes tend to be far more elaborate sites.
To the OP, it sounds like a combination of back luck, range, and an inherently difficult to find site. The ability of a probe to find a site drops rather drastically toward the outer limits of its range. So, say you have a site with a high difficulty to find naturally, located 3.85 AU away from one of the outer planets in the system. You're going to have a devil of a time picking this one up. The only thing you can do is scan over and over again hoping the RNG gods give you a good result, that allows you to drop another probe closer to the site and proceed from there. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

train triangulation and pin-pointing to 4 at least, helps a lot.
Also max-skilled cov-ops pilot with implants has a hard time find a 10/10 (over an hour i'd say) so keep scanning -----

Bad luck not finding the sig, sounds like it was a tough one to get. The other possibility is that someone beat you to it, i would suggest dropping multispec every hour to make sure the sig is still there.
When searching for unknowns i tend to use Magentometric probes rather than Radar/ladar, as i found they gave a better hit rate.
Having said that, one sig took me 5 hours to scan down (with a scan cycle of 190), and a shed load of probes, thats scanning though, the result was a 7 part expedition, that resulted in some nice True sansha drops.

Hmmm... I continued scanning for couple of hours and found the signature... have not yet finished it.
definately was a tough one.

Same thing here. Put out quest probes, scan for an hour, reset probes occasionally, no hits.
After an inordinate amount of time I log off as there is not enough time to run the complex if I did find the site(get a mission ship, warp to area, etc.).
Luck of the draw I'm afraid, I often pore through the available contracts to see if I can find any good deals.
As I've run hundred of missions, exploration is certainly not the way to get rich. It is a way to play Eve at an entirely different pace though.

To give you an idea.... a 10/10 plex or faction staging point hits at .0262 - 0.0285 for me with a quest... WITH a HG prospector set..
that's like 2% chance of a hit... and actually I think they lowered the sig on some sites... Cuz last night I found Provincial HQ and usually its like .05-.1 with a quest and it was .0234 ... thought I was scanning a 10/10 and I was ****ed to find it was provincial... alltho it did faction spawn and escalate.. so maybe that correlates somehow.

Edited by: Para Neua on 30/12/2008 07:26:33 Just take into count what the base strength of a site is, I'll show the example for Guristas here: - Gurista Base strength 4.0 - Gurista Fortress 2.0 - Gurista 6/10 2.0, but also found it with 1.0 - Gurista Military Complex 1.0 - Gurista 8/10 0.5 - Gurista Troop blabla camp 0.5 - Gurista 10/10 0.25
All these base strength's are with sift probes on very close range. Add ur normal skillz at lvl 4, and u get max 0.3 with sifts on 10/10. As sift probes have 8x the strength of quests, u cant get any better than 0.0375 with quests on it. I don't know the exact maths (read it somewhere and forgot ), but experience shows that at 50% of ur max probe range, u get about 70% of the original strength (0.02625 on 2 AU with quest), but in the last 10% of ur range (3.6 to 4 AU) it drops significantly, so the chances can get easily below 1% = 0.01 if ur very unlucky.
But don't give up too early, there are days when u hit something like that in first run too

Edited by: pushdogg on 30/12/2008 20:42:40 Edited by: pushdogg on 30/12/2008 20:41:38 i too am having the same problem, although i have low skills and have been trying in low-sec.....would moving to high sec change anything? are sites easier to scan down in high sec?
EDIT: i am very new to scanning and might need things dumbed down a little , my primary mode of revenue was pvp until about 3 weeks ago
EDIT EDIT: i have read the guide, should i read it again? best sig ever:)

theoretically the sites in highsec should be easier to find because they are usually crap.

Getting a result from a scan is chance based.....in other words luck. High level skills will help the luck factor abit.
Oh and yes, you will have days you scan down a 10/10 in your first try. On other days you wonder what you could have done in the 7 hours you spend scanning a single system without luck.
Hang in there, greed is a good motivator :)

Uhh from your second post you found the site and were running it or you found it and were still scanning down to 0m accuracy?. One thing I do is after the first cycle of quests have run - about an hour, and still no hits, I'll run a multi to recheck if the Unknown is still in the system. Sometimes while scanning other players can be actually running the site, and they complete it and it despawns immediately, or it can despawn by itself (that is my interpretation anyways) and you continue to scan with quests for an object that is no longer there. I have only failed to find 2 signatures so far - err given up on is more accurate. I have also spent 3 quests cycles - roughly 50 scans - to find a site before, so keep scanning. My personal belief from my experience with scanning is the longer it takes to find, generally the better the site, so I am happy when I have a really difficult site to find.
I am curious in your case, though, what was the system sec rating, and do you remember the signal strengths of your hits and accuracy when you did finally get a hit. Also, if you wish to share, and you found the site ... What did it turn out to be?
And for the record ... My Astro is 4, Triangulation and Pinpointing is 3, Covert Ops is 4, and Signal Acqusition is 3. With a Sisters, my scan time is 153 seconds (with 2 Gravity Capacitor Upgrade Rigs)
