Most of you know mine...solo, independant, profiteer, who spends more time flying around scanning for his next lick than anything, when he executes his plan, you can tell its gone horribly wrong when the mark is destroyed. If he's really good at is trade few people ever really know who he is, because he never hunts long enough in one region of space to become known, all of this coupled with enough skill points to be able to actually be self sufficient in 0.0 and low sec space. not included in this definition are corp.'s gangs gatecampers,(though I suspect siting in cov ops ship at a gate decloaking and scanning certain potential ships would not qualify as "gatecamping") and certainly not those poor misguided souls led astray by stories of kills in hi sec who hunt noobs moving from hi sec area to hi sec area passing through a low sec region...whos sole purpose is to simply get a kill......I would think a person who learned to pvp in 0.0 corp would amass many more kills than any pirate as killing is the last thing you want to do. Those that know something is wrong and have the ability to change it, have an obligation to do so. |

I kind of like that definition, because you can pretty much cover the entire Eve community with it.

^^ This. But I'd just add that you don't have to necessarily kill a random target. Actually, it'd probably be more profitable to ransom.
With that said, there really aren't a whole lot of pirates in Eve. What there is a whole lot of is some sort of carebear/pirate hybrid interested more in killmails than isk.

I much prefer the tears rather than the killmails or the ISK. Of course, I am more a Ninja than I am a Pirate.

For the majority so far, pirate is a broad definition covering petty criminals, low life noob killers and merc corps to skilled solo privateers who have amassed huge fortunes for the most part alone, and soly from ransom and booty? Can you be more specific? "Petty Criminals"? "Low Life Noob Killers"?
By "low life noob killers", you kind of paint with a broad brush, yet you inject your own personal opinion that these pilots aren't getting the job done. (I'll bet you hold "The United" in that group, however, I'm sure they shoot/kill mostly everything that comes their way, so I definitely wouldn't put them in that group, personally.)
In my opinion, all of the groups you've identified (and hell, even the ones you've missed) are doing two things - getting the job done, and enjoying what they're doing at the same time.

I don't agree with you that they're making good isk doing what they do. Atleast if these forums are to be believed. Most "pirates" will admit to keeping a carebear pet stashed away to make them their booty. That's more fail piracy than piracy.

As I've said before, ISK isn't the only reason to be a Pirate. (or Ninja, for that matter) Perhaps you need to broaden your horizons into the intangible - the enjoyment of the game itself, hmm?

Edited by: Sol''Kanar on 30/12/2008 15:33:50 Maybe the word pirate is too narrow for people to agree on it's definition. It's original definition was set centuries ago regarding certain naughty maritime activities. In current times, it's being used to denote theft of intellectual property. Taking those definitions into account, I think that the general vibe of the word is taking things that don't belong to you.
So, when Tchell steals loot from a mission or Bynar stakes out a mark and extracts a tidy ransom, both acts can be associated with piracy.
Maybe a broader term could be applied instead? How about "Unsavoury People"?
Edit: Proper capitalisation for Tchell's needlessly over-inflated ego. <3

When I was in 0.0 I had an empire mission running alt, I'd NPC hunt on Alowishus and do L4 missions on my alt. When I started pirating again I sold the alt because it made less money and was more boring.
If you can't make money pirating perhaps other professions beckon.

I suppose im a bit of a romantic.... if I were a pirate, i would prefer me targets to be those of experiance, and large portions of greedy type char flaws mixed in....they forget the time honored rule of never fly what you cant afford to lose.....and so if I were to relieve them of some of that extra iskies they have just laying about in empire banks collecting dust....well lessons learned:P aggravation for no other reason than grief has no...isky value, and each round fired for it is a financial loss. I think, due to your lack of experience, you don't seem to understand the economics of PvP.
99% of kill mails are generated by pilot(s) who have an advantage over their target(s). This is a fact of life in Eve. There is no distinction between one type of PvP or another, it's all killing weaker folks. I've experienced every facet of PvP in Eve and I've never been in what I would call a fair fight. Going in certain fights may seem fair, but in the aftermath you always find that it wasn't. I was in 0.0, we gate camped (most kills came from camping chokepoints, which wasn't "piracy" because it was somehow "our space"), we roamed looking for miners/npc hunters/haulers. Occasionally we'd run across an enemy gang and either engage and win/lose or play cat and mouse for an hour resulting in either an eventual engagement or nothing at all. Bottom line was it wasn't glorious and it certainly wasn't very lucrative. There is not much glory in Eve. Period. The moral and social incentives involved in PvP vary between mediocre and non-existant no matter how you go about it.
So we fall back on ISK. If you're killing idiots who suck (at least more than you do) all the time, you may as well maximize profits. The way to maximize profits is to find a good place that a lot of idiots come through, get together with some like minded people that can help form all the elements of a good trap (a fast locking ship with infinite points, long range webbers, big tank and the DPS to take down anything and everything simply does not exist so you team up with others), and wait for the ISK to come to you. Then you ransom the high value targets and kill everything else (hoping for a good drop, shuttles with BPOs and Implants- happens more than you think).
What you don't realize is that most of us pirates have a long history of all kinds of PvP so we understand whats fun (for us) and what makes ISK, and how to balance the two. It's not for everyone. Some people carry over the IRL moral fiber into games and can't bear to "grief" the hapless idiots of Eve. To me, it's just a game and the danger of my activities adds something to it. I know the allure of risk and danger was a draw for me in this game and I'm glad to help perpetuate that. Really, in a way, I'm sort of a hero.

Alowishus has the right idea about the game in general. Anyways, I will define piracy very broadly, any player who makes isk primarily from killing/ransoming other players directly. Mercenaries are paid by a third party for kills and so are not pirates. 0.0 wars are also not piracy cause isk is made from ratting and mining, not killing/ransoming. Declaring war on some random mining corp in high sec with no pvp ability at all is piracy in the truest sense. Admittedly it isn't very challenging and typically not much fun, but it's still piracy. Slaughtering everything you can in low sec and using loot/ransoms to make a living is also piracy and far more entertaining than war decs.

Actually its more the opposite for me. EVE is a game, a form of entertainment, not RL. We have nothing real at stake, no money (unless you are a GTC seller), property, or physical well being. You see in RL war/fights you do whatever is necessary to win because RL things are at stake.
Someone used this in another Pirate thread:
Jack Sparrow: [after Will draws his sword] Put it away, son. It's not worth you getting beat again. Will Turner: You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement. In a fair fight, I'd kill you. Jack Sparrow: That's not much incentive for me to fight fair, then, is it?
But even though that is a movie Jack's life & well being is in the balance, therefore he has no reason to fight fair.
It boils down to this, some people enjoy ruining other people's day or revel in others misfortune, and IRL giving free reign to that side of their personality would likely have adverse consequences they would wish to avoid. EVE allows people, even encourages people, to give free reign to that side of their personality.
Even though they often don't like to admit they're behaving in a way they know they wouldn't like to be on the receiving end of. Hence the denigration and objectification of the "stupid noob", "carebear", or whatever so that they are "lesser beings" and thus their actions are acceptable in their mind. Soldiers often do the same thing in war, thus you get Yanks, Johnny Reb, Japs, *****s/Jerry, ****s, Terry, etc.
As for the romanticizing of PVP and Piracy, Alowishus has it right there is no glory. The truly sad part is that because its a game being "honorable" really doesn't cost us much and neither does a contest of "equals". Your power won't get shut off if you lose a battle or a ship, you won't get fired, etc. so why the viciousness?
Granted its all part of the game, but I personally don't get why people go out of their way to **** in other people's Wheaties...if you've ransomed the pilot do you really have to pod them? That sticks it not only to the pilot in question but to other pirates as well. People often seem to forget that sometimes it pays more not to be a jackass. That being said I'll play the game the way I play it and you'll play it the way you want to and hopefully we never have to see one another's YARRRR! in local.

Why then not apply this to EvE where you're doing no real harm...my intent in eve:
Jack Sparrow: Well, then, I confess, it is my intention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer my weasely black guts out.

I personally think you have WAY over analyzed this game. The freedom to explore all the options afforded in this game are hardly worth this much insight. In life there is prey and predator, in game and out. You pick which one you want to be. I have explored most facets of this game and I find the most excitement being challenged by the other players. Sometimes 1v1 sometimes not. Either way as said way too many times before it is a game and that's about it.
It should also be noted that ALL players in eve have this choice, whatever you decide it is up to you.

as i stated earlier.....kills have nothing to do with my "hypothetical" pirate style...more the accumulation of wealth through the means of piracy of deep space pilots.
and which trick do you remember me thinking disgusting..log offs, scams, ......nor did i ever say that a "PIRATE" should be some sort of fair play pvper...indeed its my point exactly to be the opposite....not that what im saying has anything to do with the kill..as i and others have pointed out why blow up the golden egg? for a party yarrr? thx If I were a pirate i would much prefer a nice 100 mill transfer and silently slip off to a new hunting ground. The point of skills and training is to give the perspective pirate the ability to be in the advantage...not sheer numbers of party yarrberrys Those that know something is wrong and have the ability to change it, have an obligation to do so. |

Originally by: Dun Bynar some have taken offence to my directness of discription...this boggles me mind...(what lil of one me has left) if one aspires in game to be the lowest of lows....why be upset when describes as such..you have excelled at ur rp personna, if your toon is a backstabbing underhanded double dealing psychopathic homocidal maniac and i have described such as a direct example..why would it bother you, again you have excelled at you rp personna....my point was not to impune your personna, but attempt to remove such personnas from the discription of PIRATE . whom they clearly are not. more popcorn plz
You're categorizing and labeling people, which is fine, as long as you realize it's your opinion and you also realize it's pretty clear you have little experience in these matters. Much of this game, and what constitutes "PvP", "Piracy" or what have you, is in the eye of the beholder. You do not get to decide what is and isn't a pirate. Sorry.
Your opinion is not truth.

For EVE I define it as someone who kills the lawful to destroy/plunder their ships against the laws of the sovereign territory. Or something like that :)
