As others have mentioned, running SLI with EVE on my 64bit locks up the ENTIRE computer and I need to reboot. This is pretty lame.
Since 180 series of drivers I can now enjoy dual monitor for my needs. The only thing that bugged me about SLI was exactly that. Switching SLI on and off doesn't take too long but since I use two language layouts for my keyboard, whenever I change SLI setting I'm stuck at the language I was at and need to reboot anyway.
What possible explanation is there for an entire computer locking down when SLI is enabled? That's just ridiculous.

I too have Vista 64bit and a 9800GX2...
Might be limited to that video card but it's still annoying

SLI doesn't work with the game in windows mode. I remember seeing in the Fanfest Video a discussion about a fix for enabling SLI was possible - but only in Fullscreen. On The Cutting Edge: http://myeve.eve-online.com/download/videos/Default.asp?a=download&vid=198. Questions were raised about whether a fix although possible and relatively easy to do would be beneficial to the playerbase as a whole because it did not address the lack of a fix to playing in Windows mode as well. I hope I am summarizing correctly. Anyway I found it one of the more interesting of the Fanfest videos for what that is worth.
I mostly play in Windowed mode and just switched over to 64bit. I have to disable SLI to play in Windowed mode. If CCP implemented a fix to fullscreen only would I use it? Occasionally. But mostly I would be in Windows. Besides I think they are all focused on getting out the spring expansion soon...

I play a few games in windowed mode, EVE online is the only game that crashes my entire PC in the process.
Why is that???

Having the very same problem as you others.
Upgraded my machine yesterday from an nforce 4 based borad with a dual sli 8800 gts rig to a M3N-HT from asus with same GFX drivers...... what hadnt been a problem in the months before (running eve in SLI windowed mode with three clients) suddenly freezes my machine!!!!!
I kept the gfx cards in so they are still good and eve is afaik the only proggy that is giving me heartburn. Would be real cool if the guys at nvidia or could take a closer look as to why they choke on eve with new chipset drivers.

I have had this problems since the 174 drivers...
EVE being the only problematic game I wish there was a possible solution so I can keep SLI enabled 24/7 now that it supports dual monitor.

Just to concur here. I have two 8800 GXT's and in SLI, it bombs eve after about 5 mins. Vista 64 and 181 drivers.
Only game that does this, and turning sli off and back on is a pain in the ass.

Not since the 180 series drivers were released, SLI is now supported on two monitors.
As for the OP: I have recently had Eve lock my PC solid 3 times in 2 days.
Only "change" I could locate is that my Internet connection is being flaky - Eve runs fine most of the time but as soon as the net starts acting up it locks the machine so hard I need to cold-boot it.
By "flaky" I mean suffering > 10% packet loss.
try opeing a command prompt and typing:
ping elysaria.com -n 100
and check for dropped packets (that server is in Telehouse in London, if you're not UK-based you may want to ping your ISP's server) ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

Disabling Aero will fix it. However this is not a proper fix, which really comes down to CCP.

As said time and time over, not only in this post. Windowed mode and SLI (with AFR) does not work, and no - EVE isnt alone in this problem.
Any source engine game does the same thing - its a nvidia driver issue which nvidia need to resolve.
Either change EXEFILE.EXE to run in SFR mode, or turn off SLI on the game entirely. - - -Signature --------------------- EVE Online VoIP Services: http://evevoip.alienxservers.co.uk |

As has been said already, Aero seems to interfere with SLI and windowed mode.
I verified this by setting EVE to run without aero.
Right click on the Eve icon, and go to properties. Now click on the Compatibility tab. Check the option under settings that is labeled" "Disable desktop composition" then click OK.
This APPEARS to have fixed it for me. I am running dual monitors with SLI enabled under vista x64. Running dual nvidia 260 cards from XFX.
Driver reports this for version: 7.15.11.8044 (THOUGHT i had the 182.5 version installed) |
